Some random, some stupid, some I still can't figure out the right answer. Join along if you have a random question you'd like to ask.

So these are some things I've asked myself over the past few weeks of being in Dallas, and helping my aunt move.

1 - Did you know snot turns black when you breathe in too much dust and dirt?? yeah I know, TMI and really gross... but something I found out the hard way.

2 - Can you change an old lady's eating habits?? She never wants to finish all of her dinner (even if it's a kid's sized meal), but ohh put that plate of dessert in front of her and she'll polish it off. And if it's anything healthy she'll eat a 1/4 of a serving...

3 - Is 60's too late to change financial habits?? I'm thinking my aunt needs a day at a Dave Ramsey class, I don't think the book alone will cut it.

4 - Easiest way to protect/stain a wood fence?? I know it's not as simple as painting it. I like it's cedar wood. It's still really pretty color and my aunt wants to protect it rather than letting it go grey.

5 - Is there a way to buff up black laquer??

6 - How hard is it to install french doors, where there is a sliding glass door?? And is that something that should be left to the pro's??

7 - Do you need a permit to install sprinklers?? (garland, tx)

8 - How do you take out a section of carpeting to put in laminate??

9 - How do you freeze strawberries/fruit for the fall??

10 - Best way to remove a candle from a jar?? Candles should never be checked... I had it in my carry on, but the plane was too full so they asked to check my bag at the gate. I was too much in a hurry and too sleepy to remember i had it in my bag. Well I had one in my checked, one in the carry on, the checked one made it through ok. BTW, it's a woodwick candle, way too expensive to throw away.

11 - Why do companies insist upon using letters for their phone number?? Like southwest (800-i fly swa)... it's nice and easy to remember but doesn't make it easy when you use a smart phone. And of course they can't put the numbers below the letters.

12 - How much would it cost the redo a bathroom?? Take out a bathtub and put in a walk in shower.

13 - How do I fix a dresser drawer made of pressboard?? the back corner split apart when it fell. It's be a lot easier if it was made of real wood, but I feel like anything I do is just going to split the particle board.

14 - Can I implement Dis board rules for family talks?? Such as no political or religious talking. I know better than to say differently than others, but I still hate having to listen to it.

15 - What do you do when everything you unpack out of a box is an Antique?? My g'mother is 84, of course every china, crystal, glass, whathaveyou is an antique. Doesn't mean you need to keep every peice. Especially when you're looking at needing a china cabinet the length of a couch and to the ceiling just to hold it all. 99% of this stuff has been sitting in boxes for the past 7 yrs since the house was sold, and hasn't seen the light of day till the past couple of weeks.

16 - Why do people feel my yard sale is their free sale?? I'm only asking for a couple of dollars for a quality peice you know you'd spend a whole lot more on in the store. There was some stuff people wanted for pennies that was still new in the box. You can't win either, because you tell them a reasonable price and they try to haggle you down, tell them a higher price expecting a haggle and the turn their nose up at you.

The next four will come shortly... just have to think of them.

Please don't quote the entire post unless you have an answer for every question.... getting big long posts to show up on my phone takes long enough. I don't need it quoted again.

Most of your questions sound like google queries to me :)
Hope you get the answers you need.

You already answered, dust and dirt.

2 - Can you change an old lady's eating habits?? She never wants to finish all of her dinner (even if it's a kid's sized meal), but ohh put that plate of dessert in front of her and she'll polish it off. And if it's anything healthy she'll eat a 1/4 of a serving...

So. :confused3 Her life.

3 - Is 60's too late to change financial habits?? I'm thinking my aunt needs a day at a Dave Ramsey class, I don't think the book alone will cut it.

Again, her life. How's your financial situation?

4 - Easiest way to protect/stain a wood fence?? I know it's not as simple as painting it. I like it's cedar wood. It's still really pretty color and my aunt wants to protect it rather than letting it go grey.

5 - Is there a way to buff up black laquer??

Google.

11 - Why do companies insist upon using letters for their phone number?? Like southwest (800-i fly swa)... it's nice and easy to remember but doesn't make it easy when you use a smart phone. And of course they can't put the numbers below the letters.

You remembered it. That's their point.

12 - How much would it cost the redo a bathroom?? Take out a bathtub and put in a walk in shower.

Call a professional. Hard to give an idea without seeing the size of the job and materials wanted.

13 - How do I fix a dresser drawer made of pressboard?? the back corner split apart when it fell. It's be a lot easier if it was made of real wood, but I feel like anything I do is just going to split the particle board.

Don't bother. Go to Walmart and buy another one. They're cheap.

14 - Can I implement Dis board rules for family talks?? Such as no political or religious talking. I know better than to say differently than others, but I still hate having to listen to it.

Walk away.

15 - What do you do when everything you unpack out of a box is an Antique?? My g'mother is 84, of course every china, crystal, glass, whathaveyou is an antique. They obviously have meaning to her. Who are you to decide whether she has them or not?

You've never had a yard sale before, have you?

The next four will come shortly... just have to think of them.

We'll be waiting. ;)

Answered the questions and following the rule. :)

3 - Is 60's too late to change financial habits?? I'm thinking my aunt needs a day at a Dave Ramsey class, I don't think the book alone will cut it.

I think it's really sweet that you want to help your aunt. But before you start lecturing your 60 year old aunt (who supports herself) on finances, maybe you should be more financially responsible yourself. From your posts, it seems like you might be working in that direction, but you aren't there yet, and it would be sort of nervy to give her advice on financial habits when you don't have them yourself.

11 - Just cause I remember the phone number, doesn't mean I can dial it... which doesn't really help me much now does it??

13 - It's to my aunt's black laquer dresser set. So the little drawer has a front to it to match the rest of the set. I don't have the proper tools to just make a new drawer which would be easiest. So I need to fix what is there.

14 - Trust me, I'd love to walk away but most of them happen in the car or sitting at dinner. And then I annoy her when I pick up my phone to start texting....

And I know most could be found with google... but it's hard finding the right answers using just a phone for internet. AT&T doesn't have the lines laid for UVerse in the neighborhood, and can't connect the internet through verizon's lines. The net will be turned on well after I'm gone.

2- It just bothers me, cause she used to be the one to cook all the meals, and of course we had to finish our plates and try a little bit of everything. And it's a bad habit that my aunt got her into.

What kind of phone do you have that doesn't have letters on their keypad? I have a smartphone and use it all the time for searching. You can post on the DIS continuously but not search the web? Okaaaaayyyyy.

11 - Just cause I remember the phone number, doesn't mean I can dial it... which doesn't really help me much now does it??

Why can't you dial it? Your phone has letters on the keypad doesn't it?
(I admit I don't have the latest phone so maybe I just don't know :confused3)

Edited to add-I did not intend to put the thumbs down! I hit something quickly and I can't get rid of it!!

Not all smartphones have the old number/letter set up.
This is the blackberry a friend of mine has
blackberry_curve_-8900.jpg

trying to fly 1-800-i fly swa on it would be kind of difficult since only about 3 of those letters are on numbers at all, and the ones that are aren't necessarily on the number from the old set up. I'll admit I haven't used her blackberry so I don't know if keying the letters into the number dialing screen would convert the letters to the numbers or something. I have an iPhone so I don't have this issue anymore lol.

It's your aunt's stuff, correct? So, you didn't pay for any of it and whatever you get is pure profit, right?

Hold down the alt key while pressing the letter.

Hi Sandra--first I want to tell you that I have tried to answer yoru PM but your inbox is full so it won't let me. Sorry.
I cut out most of the questions (leaving enough to tell what they were) to cut down on the length.

1 - Did you know snot turns black when you breathe in too much dust and dirt??.ick--but yes. next time buy a mask to wear when working on something like that--they are readily available these days. Make sure your grandmother is not in the area breathing that junk in either.

2 - Can you change an old lady's eating habits?? maybe, but it is really not your job. She is an adult--please treat her as one. IF her doctor has said she must (diabetic, etc?) then you may have a reason to push the issue, but since you are not her primary caretaker probably not even then

3 - Is 60's too late to change financial habits??
Respectfully becasue I know you really do want to help, until you can take care of yourself long term you have no right to lecture her about this at all.

4 - Easiest way to protect/stain a wood fence??
My understanding is that cedar holds its color really well and does not need any kind of finishing (but you have to make sure the hardware is aluminum(? I think--something) and not iron which can rust and stain the fence. But, I could be mistaken and this is something that Google would answer best.

5 - Is there a way to buff up black laquer??
Again, google will know better than I will, but I think a basic dry furniture wax would do it
6 - How hard is it to install french doors,
leave it to pros

7 - Do you need a permit to install sprinklers?? (garland, tx)
call city hall and ask--they will transfer you to the correct person. If you have underground wiring in the area you may have to have the lines marked before digging as well.

8 - How do you take out a section of carpeting to put in laminate??
We just pull it and the pad up and get the tack strips up with a crow bar. It is hot and messy work but simple.

9 - How do you freeze strawberries/fruit for the fall??wash and dry well. Place in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze. After they are frozen you can transfer them into large freezer bags.
no clue--google again.

11 - Why do companies insist upon using letters for their phone number?? because they ARE easy to remember--you should be bale to figure them out on a phone without numbers--just say the ABCs in your head a couple of times and think that every number has 3 letters except 7 and 9 have four.
12 - How much would it cost the redo a bathroom??
depends a lot on the size and what all you want to do. Call a contractor for a quote.

13 - How do I fix a dresser drawer made of pressboard??
you cannot do a good repair on such cheap stuff. You can tape it up with strapping tape to hold until you can replace it.

14 - Can I implement Dis board rules for family talks?? :lmao:

15 - What do you do when everything you unpack out of a box is an Antique??
You respect your grandmother's 84 years.

16 - Why do people feel my yard sale is their free sale??
Yard sale are for getting almost new stuff for pennies. The people who make lots of money on sales sell A LOT for next to nothing-no one wants to pay "what it is worth" at a yard sale--if they did they would stay home in the comfort of their living rooms and shop on ebay
The next four will come shortly... just have to think of them.
.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info. The difference between the sym key and the alt key are one of those things that caused me to get an iphone. Another friend let me play around with her blackberry one day and it took me about 25 mins to try to figure out how to get anything to work lol. :)

I have a nokia E71x... the numbers are right in the middle of the keypad. And it doesn't have an option like that to convert the letters to numbers.

It is my aunt's stuff. But I'm not keeping all the profits. She's willing to share with me since I'm the one sitting outside all day.

And posting on the dis is one thing. But I just don't seem to get the right results. Half the time it's because webpages don't show up correctly for mobile web browsing. So there's a lot of sites I avoid just cause it takes forever to load and doesn't show up properly. If any one that uses a smart phone for every day browsing would know this.

And I figured it'd be a fun topic... sheesh. Don't you ever just think of a random stupid question you'd like to hear different answers to??

And I figured it'd be a fun topic... sheesh. Don't you ever just think of a random stupid question you'd like to hear different answers to??

A random question--yeah sure, but 20 (or 16 as the case may be) some of which are really specific and with instructions to respondents NOT to quote the whole thing (meaning we should all try to remember all 16 while we post:confused3) is a little more than just a fun topic for us all if you stop to think about it.

1 - Thanks for pointing that out! :scared1:

2 - Unless she has medical problems that require a strict diet she can eat what she wants.

3 - A 60s year old women who earns ALL the money in the household does not need somebody who lives off of her to tell her to put her financial house in order.

4 - Google

5 - Google

6 - Leave it to a pro.

7 - Call (garland, tx) to find out.

8 - Tear it out or cut out just what is to be replaced.

9 - Google

10 - I have not idea what you are asking here.

11 - Easy to remember.

12 - Get quotes

13 - Google

14 - No since you are not the owner of your home.

15 - It is up to the owner of the stuff. If you Grandma wants a china cabinet then she can get one. If she wants to store it, then store it. Once you become the owner, it ever, then you can sell, smash or ditch the stuff by the road side.

16 - This is the way it always is with yard sales. This is why I don't ever waste my time having a yard sale.

Especially when many of the questions are random questions but questions with a single, specific answer (i.e. rules about installing sprinklers in Garland, Texas).

Yes, I would venture to guess that the vast majority of DISsers are not interested in the rules regarding sprinkler installation in Garland Texas:dance3:

Sandra--my dad grew up just down the road in Rowlett. I used to visit my aunt there every summer, does Dairy Queen still serve chicken with gravy, steak fries and texas toast? I used to love that as a kid--back when I had no idea how bad it was for me:rotfl2:

Wait wait wait...I have a Samsun A177 and I can't get letters to show up either when dialing. For example, I ca't dial 407-W-DISNEY (unless I can figure out which letters go with which numbers). I've tried hitting the function and symbol buttons but nothing works!
