Just wondering what I should bring (if anything) for my 2 year old to sit in on the plane to Disney. We just came back in August (she was on my lap) and strange enough...there wasn't any other kids her age on the plane. Any suggestions?

When we went on a plane last year I took anything I thought she'd want. You get to take a purse, "diaper bag", and a carry on. We brought a dvd player with headphones, coloring books, her blanket, and snacks. She did well going over put comming back was bad. We had a stop each way and we got on and off the plane within 24 hours. My only complaint was because she was two the flight attendant made her sit in her car seat for take off and she wanted to be held. I know rules are rules but she has a high pitch scream that seriously hurts. I made sure that when the attendant told me to buckle her in the everyone knew I told him she would scream. Everyone was nice on the flight the little boy in front of us turned to play with her, and actually a gentleman on the plane complimented me on handling it so well. I was so thankful that he did that since the flight before someone muttered loudly "If she was mine I'd smack her." cause you know I was making her cry on purpose! lol! Good Luck!

If she rides in a carseat at home, I'd bring it one the plane. We did that with DS when he was 15 months old, and it was fine. He was asleep before takeoff.

That really upsets me that someone said that! Yeah, like that wouldn't make someone just cry harder?! Duh.

OP, when my kids were that young, I'd make sure to bring a couple special/small toys they'd never seen before to whip out to divert a meltdown.

Have a fun trip!

I'm thinking someone didn't read the original post! ;)

To the OP, bring a car seat, your child will be much happier.

Until my DD was four, we took her FAA approved car seat. There should be a sticker on it saying it is FAA approved (most are I think). I think most children are used to their car seat and it helps them settle down. And my daughter hated sitting still but respected that she had to stay in a car seat once buckled in.

As someone has mentioned, if the child is ticketed, you will be required to have them buckled up in their own seat or car seat for take off and landing. I've never seen this waived although I have seen people post that they were allowed to hold the child. The FAs could lose their job for allowing that though.

While it's not required the TSA, FAA and American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend using a carseat until the 40lb mark. I found my kids were more comfortable and used to sitting while straped in a familiar seat.

Unless its a much older model or some type of hybread seat yours is most likely ok to use onboard. Look for a sticker that indicates it is approved for use in motor vehicles and on aircraft - FAA dosen't appear in the wording.

If your using DME and won't have a need for the carseat its temping to leave it at home but for a 2yo I would personally bring one despite the small hassle.
As pp's have mentioned all ticketed passengers must be strapped in while the seat belt sign is on.

In flight- bring an empty sippie and then purchase drinks after security. This way you will have what your child likes and don't have to wait on the FA's. Sipping or any chew / swallow will help with ear pressure. I let my kids have the gerber gummies at that age. It helps with the ears and its something new and fun.

A few small familiar toys/books and a few new ones should get you through the flight. We did alot of hand/finger games, got your nose kind of things as well. My dd once played with a roll of scotch tape for an entire 3 hour flight, so you never know!

Well, you can't blame the flight attendent from doing her job - it's a law that passengers need to be buckled in.

We didn't take the car seat when DD was 2 and she did fine. DD loved books. I found these little box sets with a handle that had about 12 little Disney board books in them. We took one with Princesses and one with all different Disney characters. They kept her busy almost the whole time. I found ours at Ross, but I've seen them at Kohl's lately.

DVD player, finger puppets, Color Wonder book and pens, new board books, Magna Doodle, LOTS of snacks, stickers, glitter lotion. Nothing with a million pieces, loud, or easily thrown (when DS was 2 he chucked a Hot Wheels three rows in front of us and I almost died!)

Let her run around a lot in the airport before or between flights, and unless you're alone and struggling with a lot of gear, I'd skip the "pre-boarding" and get on the plane near the end of boarding.

Well when I was 2 11/12 I had a small backpack and my mom had packed it full of new toys for me to discover. She had small travelable toys so that I could lose them and she wouldn't be upset. Hope it helps.

Closer to age 1 or 3? For a big 2 year old, I wouldn't bother with the car seat, as they are a real pain to lug through the airport. However, if you don't take it be sure you buy her a seat and that she will STAY in the seat belt when you ask her to. :)

For a younger or small 2, take the seat! The baby will be more comfortable, and more important, she will be safe. I was on a plane that hit turbulance once, and the only person injured was a non-belted lap child. It was scary and sad. :sad2:

We have bought a seat for DS on all of our trips - his first, second, and next week his third birthday.

We ALWAYS bring his carseat and its a godsend! Sometimes he even naps in it on the plane which is fantastic and its much safer than just buckling him in. If you dont want to bring a carseat rent/borrow/buy a CARES harness so at least your child is safe.

As far as gear on the plane, DH usually wears the carseat on his back like a backpack (arms through the loosened straps), so that means that we only have 1 backpack of stuff. We cram our laptop, portable dvd player (laptop battery is crap), books/toys for DS, snacks, and anything we need for the parks that day (travel sunscreen, shorts etc). This year DS has a tiny backpack of his own that he might carry which will be fun because he can carry some of his own toys! We also bring his zippy stroller which is sturdy enough for us to put the carseat on if we dont want to carry it around the airport.

If you are traveling with another adult, we always have DH go install the carseat early when boarding starts and then I wait with DS until the end of boarding so he isnt stuck in his seat as long and we are not standing in the aisle while DH installs the carseat!!!!

You should absolutely buy a seat for your 2 year old and bring a car seat for her to ride in.

I have worked for a major US commercial airline for the past 8 yrs and am a mom to a 9yo son with high functioning autism and a 4yo daughter. We travel ALOT both in a plane and car.

Bringing the carseat depends on many things. Personally, I have brought the carseat for use on board the aircraft 1 time and learned that it is too much of a pain. If you like to pre-board (early), which is probably only a good idea if you have an infant and feel the need to settle in before take off. It is a nightmare to strap the seat in (must be in the window seat which may cause an argument between siblings) without holding up boarding behind you for other passengers. While you are in your row installing the seat the rest of your family is standing in the aisle and everyone behind them is now inconvenienced and you may actually cause a delay in departure. If you wait until the end of boarding it is VERY difficult to carry the carseat up the aisle without hitting everyone seated in the aisle in the head with the seat. On some aircraft you may not be able to carry it over everyone's head due to the height of the ceiling or mounted equipment. If you insist on using the carseat on board, I suggest if there are two adults, sending 1 adult on with the carseat a few minutes before the other adult and children board. That allows the 1st adult to put the carseat in and then when the kids arrive the seat is all ready for them and no one is inconvenienced.

If you need the carseat in Orlando say in a rental car you can check it at the ticket counter or the gate to be picked up in the jetbridge in each city you fly into. (1 carseat OR stroller per child free of charge if your airline charges for checked bags *carseat/stroller combos may be subject to additional fees for checking especially if you are bringing the base too*) You cannot check one carseat at the counter and a stroller at the gate for the same child without incurring another checked bag fee. If you decide to bring your carseat to the gate you may be able to forgo the stroller all together since bringing your own stroller to Disney is also a pain when using Disney transportation. Get a foldable wheeled luggage cart and bungee straps to attach the carseat to the luggage cart. Your child can sit in it and be wheeled through the airport (except through TSA) and you can gate check the carseat and carry on the folded up luggage cart (provided you have the correct number of carry ons per person).

My children both behaved well enough after I explained the rules of what the fasten seat belt light meant. They still know that when that light comes on they must be in the seatbelt (no bathroom trips) PERIOD! You know your child's respect level and limitations.

I always bring no spillable cups just in case we hit turbulence or a bouncy kiddo knocks over the drink. You can get beverages to carry on board once you pass the checkpoint. Have a variety of snacks too. I put my 4yo, even though she is potty trained in a pull up and bring extras. We call them airplane panties. You know how kids are and they have to use the potty at some in-opportune times. This way if she has an accident it is quickly cleaned up without too much stress for either of us. Always pack extra diapers if your 2yo still wears them...you never know when a flight may be delayed on the ground or in the air or if you divert. I also bring coloring books and crayons, her doll with some clothes, some traveling games and her leapster. We have brought out the laptop with movies occasionally as well. I have used the skymall magazine to look for puppies and kitties as a distraction too. Do not bring Playdoh, regular markers or crumbly snacks like popcorn....MESSY!

I am happy to answer any questions or help with suggestions that may make your air travel and Disney planning a little easier on you. My little one has been flying since she was 2 weeks old and did her first transatlantic flight at 11 mos. My kids fly usually once a month and sometimes more so I have done this a time or two! ;)

I have traveled with my kids at ages 11 months , 15 months 2, 2 and a half and older and i have never brought the car seat. they have always done fine. Up to the age of two they can sit on your lap but after that they need to be buckled. My opinion once you buckle her up is she is not crying do not let her out of the seat. I bring the dvd player and color wonder and yes even at 740 in the morning candy always works. i also found my 3 year old is addicted to country music so i am bring my ipod for her. hope this helps.

I have never used a car seat on the plane (lap child until 2 then just her own seat sice). I did spend a lot of time with her before hand when she had to do her first own seat practicing her sitting on her own and doing up her seat belt etc. And like others, she has known the rules from the begining about staying in her seat while the sign is on - in fact she tells us to sit down when it comes on. Other than that of course lots of distracting things at take off and landing (mini smarties or lollopops do the job nicely as much as it goes against my healthy child mentality).

we took DD down to GA just before she was 2 and though she was a lap rider I was recommended to gate check the carseat for each leg incase she got a seat and so we would have it when we got there and the leg we did get a seat she did well and we were glad that we had brought a small backpack bag for her with some goodies - a new gift (a small puzzle and a little people plane) as well as crayons, coloring books, her doll, and a few other small toys as well as one of her blankets and we didn't have any problems other than takeoff scared her a little so I held her hand and tried to get my head as close to hers as possible. Oh and our mini DVD player was a must, more for while we were waiting to leave than when we were flying!
