We are adopting and looking to take our daughter to WDW when she is two.
It's really about as long as we can wait until our next trip there :goodvibes
So our question is.... For people who have gone with a 2 year old.... what will she enjoy? Any tips? Is this just too young? Was your child affraid of the characters?
We will be first time parents so it is all new to us.
We would be staying on site . Probably at YC or AKL.
We know it is important to take it slow and to go back during the day for naps... but really... that's about all we know. :rotfl:

My two year old is going for his 4th trip to WDW in less than two weeks.
My 6 year old was afraid of characters that did not have human heads. Now she loves them. My 2 year is not afraid of characters. So, it depends on the child. I would start with the human characters, like princesses, and go from there.
Also, my little guy was not afraid of rides during our first two trips. For our 3rd, he hated anything dark. He was terrified of Pirates, Spaceship Earth, etc. He loved hanging out in the stroller and people watching. He also liked to "walk" around a bit. We have a monkey backpack "leash" that allows him to do this a bit. My daughter was never afraid of rides. Loved TOT at the age of 4!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Parenthood is awesome and you have a whole new world awaiting you!

Our oldest dd first went right after her 2nd birthday. She did not like the "non-face" characters (Mickey sent her into her Grandpa's armpit) but loved everything else. She loved Small World, Haunted Mansions, Pirates, everything we took her on! Her second trip was when she was 2 1/2, this time she was better with characters, but a little more leary of the dark rides.

Our second dd was 18 months on her first trip and loved everything. Gave Minnie a hug first thing. At 2 1/2, she still loved everything. So I think it definitely depends on the child. Just go at her pace and focus on the things she seems to like. If Mickey freaks her out, cancel those character dining ADR's. She may just love going on the TTA over and over again. Ours have always counted the monorail as the greatest ride ever invented, love anything involving water (Donald's boat, Ariels's grotto), the parades, and the playareas. Anything with a long line was right out. Fireworks have been hit or miss, usually better from father away (less noise). They also love DTD, they could play in the Lego playhouse for hours!

We have never gone back to the room for naps. We could never get our kids to settle down for a nap in a strange place. They usually just konked out in the stroller for an hour or two at some point in the day. Much less stressful for us then trying to be quiet in a dark hotel room while the baby stands in the pack-n-play yelling "mommy, no sleepy! mommy, get out!". Others swear by the midday break, so again, it is up to the child in my mind.

In any case, it is such a joy seeing the World anew through a little ones eyes! Enjoy!

first, congratulations!! she's a lucky girl to have a family ready and waiting for her - but i'm sure you guys feel like the lucky ones!

my ds was 21 months for our first trip... he loved all the characters and rides. it depends on the kid though. you won't know till you go w/ her.

my advice:

have an umbrella stroller (don't rent from disney). you'll need it for around the hotel grounds, etc. and she'll feel more comfortable in 'her' stroller.

napping - we went back to the hotel every afternoon and drove the kids around in our car (we drove down) for them to nap. my kids were car-sleepers, so that worked well for us. there was no way they would have napped in the hotel room. if she won't nap in the room or strolling around the grounds of the hotel, just plan on no naps, but calling it a day earlier than you would if she had napped.

plan on early mornings if that's her schedule, get to the parks and get all the rides done w/ no lines... we always had an adr for lunchtime (11:30am) at a sit down restaurant (get out of the heat, be served, sit and relax), then we'd leave the park. it was enough for the kids. we'd then have the kids nap, and enjoy the resort (swimming, playgrounds, just strolling around). a couple of times we went back to MK for the 3pm parade after napping, maybe stay for dinner, but definitely not every day. not pushing the kids is key.

i'd also maybe recommend considering the poly or contemporary instead of YC or AKL. you'll be able to easily go back and forth to MK, and i'm guessing that's where you'll spend a majority of your time. you'll be able to enjoy the fireworks from your resort that way (most little kids don't like the loud noise in the parks of the fireworks) and get her right to bed (or if you have an MK view, she can be asleep already and you watch from your balcony).

enjoy your planning and enjoy the magic of parenthood!

Thanks everyone. These are very helpful tips. I love Disney and have been quite a few times.... but I feel like this is going to be a whole new experience!!!! :cool1:

My DD is two and we just got back. This was her 4th or 5th trip. She LOVED the characters, seeing the castle, watching the shows. She also loved rides like Dumbo, Peter Pan, Small World, Triceratop Spins at AK, the KidCot Fun Stops at Epcot, Playhouse Disney at MGM, all the different playgrounds and the water fountains in the various parks.

Enjoy your trip!!!

:yoda: :darth: :chewy: :hmghost: (My DS loves these smilies!)

CONGRATULATIONS!!! First, I think 2 is a great age to bring your child...the World is really magical to them at this age. I brought 2 1/2 year old twins this year (everyone thought we were nuts) and we enjoyed it so much we are planning to go back at the end of JAN 2007. I don't know what time of the year you are planning to go, but I think the weather in late JAN/early FEB is perfect and the lines are practically non-existant - so a great time to go with small children. We stayed in ASMovies resort and utilized the buses for transportation...brought our own umbrella strollers since there was a good deal of walking involved just getting from bus stop to park or hotel room. I think for the little ones bringing your own stroller instead of renting is the way to go. I'll rent when they are older and have longer legs! ;)

About characters---mine were not afraid at all from across the room or a few feet away, but as soon as a character walked up they cried. I had several character meals booked, which I almost cancelled. We decided not to cancel them because when the characters see that your children are afraid they basically just wave from a few feet away and move along. This way the boys really enjoyed the meals. By our 4th character meal they were high-5ing Mickey Mouse, touching Pluto's tongue, and playing with all the characters...I love the pics and video I got for that meal! This last meal was at Garden Grill in Epcot, which is a pretty quiet restaurant...I think the way it's set up really helped them to not be "overwhelmed" and they really enjoyed it. I would just say take it slow...maybe give them 2 or 3 days to get used to the parks before you book a character meal.

About naps: Mine would never nap in a stroller. They are just too curious...it will never happen. So, we had to go back to the room for naps. I brought their air purifier with us and put it on in the room...this helped them go to sleep. If you have any kind of musical item or white noise type of item for your child, I would bring it. Mine went to sleep within minutes of laying down every single time. (BTW---white noise is a great helper to get them to sleep at home as well).

Every child is different when it comes to attractions. I had one son who was game to go into every attraction we tried. The other was afraid of every 3-D movie and Fantasmic. For 3-D movies, I just made sure I knew where to exit and sat near that area...if my son got upset I immediately removed him from the theater. I would usually walk him around the area outside, play, get a mickey ice cream bar, etc...so we still enjoyed our time. My dh would stay in with my other son. For Fantasmic we just left the park completely. I think the darkness and the loud sounds were just too much for them. We'll try again this year, maybe with ear muffs/plugs, but if they still don't like it we'll just leave. We just made sure to avoid anything we thought was not age-appropriate or that we couldn't get out of if we needed to. The boys were interested in way more than I imagined. Their favorites were Small World, Pooh's ride, Peter Pan's Flight, Pirates, Pooh's Playful Spot, Triceratop Spin (AK), Spectromagic Parade (they LOVED this), fireworks show at MK.

Another tip: I bought things on sale at the Disney Store for 5 months leading up to our trip and kept them hidden in a bag. I brought them with us and pulled toys out at different times during the trip. It was much cheaper than having to buy stuff at the park. For nighttime when you're waiting for parades or shows any light-up toy spinners work great as well as glo-sticks (which you can find at a dollar store).

Have lots of FUN! :wizard:

Funny that you stated this...... We have always said that we would do this once we went with a little one . :goodvibes

My dd was 2 when we went and she had a great time. We went in May and she still talks about going back to "Ni-dis-World". She enjoyed herself so much! She loved all the characters, the rides, the food, the fireworks, the parades. etc.! We took it pretty easy, but I knew which rides I wanted to take her on, and what we could skip. We went to MK for two days (one day from 1pm-closing, the other day from opening to about 3pm. We did AK for a half day. We also went to downtown disney several evenings which she absolutely loved! I am so happy that we took her at that age b/c it was so magical. We can't wait to go back in November!
