We are moving on June 10! I started packing a few boxes today. When we moved 6 years ago, it was my first time and I read a book on How To Move. I didn't read it again and I feel like I should be doing something I'm forgetting.

So what are your best Moving Tips?

We are packing most of it ourselves, will have movers to pack the kitchen &l electronics. Then they Move it All! We're moving 50 miles or so.

Back to my packing ideas..........

I'd do the kitchen first. We did this accidently when we were waiting for the carpets to be cleaned in the new house. We got the kitchen and laundry room completely unpacked that day - it made the rest of the move so much easier.

My family & I moved to MI from CA & we knew that we would probably have most of our stuff in storage for at least 6 months since we moved into an apt & then started the house search. Anyway, I didn't need all my boxes with me so I really needed to know what was in each box (so that I could determine which ones I'd need to keep with me.)

I numbered each box that I started to pack & I wrote on the box what room it belonged in. Then I also compiled a list of what items were in each box (not every single item of course but as many as I could list or just some of the most important items that I knew I'd be looking for.) Example:

# 1 ~ Kitchen

On a legal sized pad, I started my list:

Box # 1 ~ cutting board, silverware tray, pot holders, etc...

The legal pad stayed with me at all times during the move. Our stuff went by a van line (but I did all the packing) & we flew to MI. Two weeks later the truck arrived with our stuff & out came the trusty legal pad. As the movers would read off a box number, I'd scan the contents & tell them to either unload it or to keep it on the truck (as they were going to move the rest of our items to the storage unit we rented.) It went pretty quick & it was pretty organized which helped.

If the box was going to storage, I'd write a big "S" by the box # on my legal pad (so that I would know where the box was), otherwise, I knew the other boxes were somewhere in the apartment.

My biggest suggestion would be to, at the very least, write on the box which room it should go in once it's delivered. Pack up all your breakables in lots of newspaper (we lost NOTHING on this move...not one glass nor cup, NOTHING.) But most important, try to keep your sanity throughout the move. Even moving across the street can be stressful!

Good Luck & don't forget to take some photo's...it's a big milestone moving.

You're already doing the most important thing... you're hiring someone else to move you. I've helped others move and nothing beat being able to stay in my kitchen to unpack as the movers brought everything in for us.

Be as organized as possible...label boxes, if you don't do an inventory (ie kitchen box #1 contains blah blah blah) at least write stuff like, "kitchen, open immediately" on a box that contains the basic necessities like coffee maker, some glasses and plates. Pack a box that contains towels, sheets, toiletries, etc. and either bring it with you, or lable to be opened immediately...they are things you'll want to have on hand for that night.

Unpack your kitchen and bedroom first off. Unpacking always takes longer than you think it will, so at least you'll be able to eat/get a drink and sleep!

Bring a pad or 2 of paper and some pens with you. Write down your new phone number and address/zip and put it on the fridge as soon as you get there.

Bring some cash to tip the movers. Ours unpacked for us and we bought them lunch, too.

I would bring some cleaning supplies with you, too. No matter how clean you might think the previous owners were, I usually give everything a once over before the movers get there. Oh, and bring some toilet paper & paper towels with you.

Good luck on your move! We moved 11/01, 10/02, and are expecting to move again by the end of summer. Blech. And no, we aren't military. Sometimes things just work out that way! LOL!

"Take a business trip and let your wife worry about moving." worked really well for me.

one other thought...if you don't have cell phones and plan to have the phones turned on the day you move, bring a phone with you so you can use it if necessary.

This may seem a bit odd, but I pack all my kitchen utensils, (silverware, etc.) in plastic bags, that way the movers only have to grab a bag, wrap it in paper and pack. This way I never had to wash all those kitchen utensils when I unpacked.

get a bag or box and fill it with the following things:

paper plates
napkins
plastic/paper cups
plastic utensils
two rolls of toilet paper
a box of tissues
a box of bandaids and first aid creme/antiseptic
a face cloth and towel
a phone book or internet print out of take out places in your new area
a pad of paper and pencil

Seal it, mark it FIRST NIGHT and put it in the trunk of your car. That way you don't have to go hunting for everything, opening up box after box while someone stands by urgently needing to go to the bathroom, bleeding, nose running or hungry :)

Yes, DITTO what Princessmom said!! The one thing I learned -- mark the box with your bedding, and toilet paper, and basic kitchen-y stuff. Everything else can wait to unpack.
And definitely number the boxes and keep an inventory of everything! That way, when the movers bring the boxes in, you can check off the numbers on your sheet and make sure you got every box and piece of furniture.

When we moved last year, I also asked the DIS for tips. :) One of the best tips I received was to use your t-shirts, towels, etc to pack breakable stuff so you don't have to deal w/ all the paper. It worked great for us!

Put the stuff you want in the house FIRST...on the truck LAST! Cleaning stuff...some kitchen stuff (paper plates, plastic cups and flatwear, coffeemaker, microwave)...large rugs....some toys for the kids.

Throw away as much "junk" as you can now so you do not have to worry with it while unpacking.

also, if you have any stuff that you don't want to unpack...stored Holiday decorations, old memory stuff, make sure to mark on the box what it is and don't open.
