2 Weeks Notice, Boss on Vacation

I wasn't looking for a new job but got a call from someone I used to work with who went into business for himself 16 years ago. At that time, he offered me a job but being foolish I turned him down and stayed where I was (He was my office manager and was going out on his own. Well, now his employee of 16 years is leaving for a better job for her. He has met my salary and vacation request. Now, I have to give 2 weeks notice but my present bosses (hus & wife) have left on vacation. If I wait until they come back, it will only amount to 1 week notice. They said to call on their cell if any problems came up. Would you call them? Thanks for your opinions.

I certainly would. Otherwise give notice to whoever is above him (if there is someone) so your tail is covered. Congrats on the new job! Geez...I need one like that...match your salary and vacation requests!

Yes, I would call them on the cell phone cause something did come up and so that he is able to figure things out in getting a replacement for your position. Just tell him that you are giving him your two week notice, and if he wants, he can talk to you about it when he returns from his vacation. If you have a supervisor there, then talk to them and you can get their opinion. I suggest you write your letter of resignation now and date it two weeks before your last day. Congratulations on your new job and hope you like it.

Is it possible for you to wait three weeks to start the new job? That way you could wait until your bosses got back, and then give your two weeks notice. It sounds like your new boss really wants you and would have to respect your loyalty and doig the right thing by your present employer. If not, I would call on teh cell phone.

A lot of it depends on the company you work for now. Is it a small company and you leaving is a very big deal? How hard will it be to replace you?
How have your present bosses treated you? Are you on good terms with them?

My new job, the person is leaving 3/1. However, I have a vacation planned for that week and can't start until 3/9. The timing of this whole thing is really poor but cant be helped.

As far as my current bosses, they are good and I have no problems with them. But we are combining 2 offices shortly and dont know what that means in terms of consolidation. I am leaning towards calling them. At least the people I work with in my current office can be told and I can start helping them with things they will have to do once I am gone.

Call him and give your two weeks notice. Let's look at it from the other side, if your current boss wanted to get rid of you would he give you notice? No, you'd have an hour to gather up your things and get out.

Calling him in purely business; it sounds like it's nothing personal. Just call him.

I completely disagree. Imagine if you were on vacation, and work called you and dropped a bomb like this. My trip would be ruined.

I think it's better to only give 1 week's notice in this case. I don't think you should cancel your vacation, but the timing of it seems to be not good for either case.

Any chance they'll be checking their emails from vacation? You can email a resignation letter. Whatever you decide, good luck with your new position, it sounds wonderful.

Who is in charge while they are gone? You could resign to that person. Otherwise, call the cell and let them know. It's rough on the vacation, but better than a cold bucket of water on their return.

Thanks for all your opinions. I have decided to wait until they return from vacation and let them know. I don't feel I will be leaving them under staffed as we are merging offices and I doubt they will replace me at this point.

Just to let everyone know, I decided to wait until my boss's returned from vacation and gave my notice today. This was not an easy thing for me to do as I never left a job on my own before. My job prior to this I was with for 25 years and walked in on a Monday and was told they no longer needed me as times were bad and they could not afford to keep my on. This job I have had for almost 2 years and would not have left accept my new boss called & asked me to come work for him.

Well, now I just hope the new job turns out as well as I expect.

Even if your boss was not on vacation, things will go better if, even after you give 2 weeks'notice, you are prepared to stayh a little longer to train a new employee or wrap things up.

Interviewing hint (heard from Bruce Williams "next caller is from Orlando Florida, Mickey Mouse land" on his talk show years ago): If the interviewer asks, "when can you start?", the correct answer is not "immediately" if you are not already unemployed. That answer means you will be quick to "up and leave" with minimal notice when yet another job change is on the horizon. Any good boss will respect that and give flexibility for the start time, and expect similar flexibility at the end of the job.
