2-way radios

I was wondering if two way radios or walkie talkies worked on board. We cruised on the Wonder a few years back, but there were only 4 of us. This time, there is a gang of us going and it would be nice to keep in contact on the ship in case we needed to meet up.

Anyone use them before? Thanks for the advice.

They worked for us. We even used them on Castaway Cay. My DS wanted to go back to the ship to see the Incredibles. We were able to talk to him while he was on the ship and we were on Serenity Beach.

Worked for us as well, although sometimes there was a bit of static depending on where each of you are on the boat.

The two-way radio worked well for us on the ship. It gave our daughters a sense of independence to go upstairs to get some food or drink by themselves
but we were able to keep in contact with them.

I'm interested in this too. Any particular brand you can recommend?

We have the Motorola Talkabouts, they worked wonderfully for us on the ship.

I also had a set of walkie talkies. Worked great in every place but Studio Sea.

Do any of you guys have the motorola radios that supposedly have an eight mile reach. They also have about 99 different sub channels that will restrict other radios from interfering with your radio. I just bought four of then at Costco and here in Indy the limit of distance is about two miles. What is your take on this particular model? They may well be the talkabout type you mention. I don't have them in front of me to double check.

Sorry, I just checked ours and the Uniden, not motorola. We had about a 2 mile radius. We used them mostly for Castaway Cay, my DH went to shore earlier than me and he called me to tell me where they were at. They were set up right before Cookies (not too far down the beach) but was able to call back to the ship with them. We did tend to get interference on the ship because of all the other 2 way radios being used.

Thanks for all the replies. I will definitely be bringing some for our trip. Sounds like they could come in handy!

Definitely get the ones with subchannels or you may have trouble finding a free channel. Some people get very possessive about "their" channels. We even once heard "radio rage" at Universal.

Also, I recommend the kind that scramble your conversation, especially if you are setting up meeting times/places with kids. I may be overly cautious, but I wouldn't really want strangers overhearing that.

Can you recommend one that does this? How does it work?
Thank You :flower:

I wasted about 2 hours on our last cruise trying to find missing family members - LOL! Told dh I would wait for him at the portholes near Parrot Cay while he went to look for our daughter....after an hour of waiting I gave up and went wandering the ship....found the 2 of them having ice cream up near the Goofy Pool  .

Next time, we will definitely be bringing some of these!

Think I am planning to bring mine to keep tabs on my DS(11), but had my one Sea day on the Wonder spoiled by a Mom at the adult (did I say Quiet) pool yelling into her walkies constantly. The kids might just have been right next to me. Then of course they had to come in and check on the mom several times. The reception isn't always that great which is why I'm sure you have to talk very loudly sometimes. But sort of wrecks the Quiet Pool concept.
It's sort of like when I go out to dinner with my DH alone. I don't want to sit next to a family with kids. We have 5 and when we go out alone I would like to be adults only. pirate:
