I remember when I worked fast food; if someone tipped me it was a huge shock and basically my jaw dropped. LOL

I can't speak for all restaurants, but the Curbside Takeaway servers at Outback Steakhouse are a tipped position. They get server minimum (when I worked, 2.36 an hour). Not a role I wanted to do, because most people didn't tip.

The "Gee Thanks" could be shock, but an eye roll? You tipped very nicely for minimum work, compared to the server that would come to your table.

Last I checked, tipping was voluntary. (And yes, I generally tip at least 20% for sit down meals)

And the "Do you need change?" thing irritates me too.

At most chain restaurants the person taking your takeout order/bringing it out to you is paid the server minimum and it is a tip position.


OP, I garee with the other posters. That person was out of line. $2 on a $9 order is more than appropriate.

What irritates me is when a waiter/waitress asks me if I want change. I realize that they usually don't know what bills I have to give them but on the flip side, I don't have to tip them either. I would prefer that they just say "I'll be back in a minute with your change". That way I have the option to say "I don't need any".

The other day I got that line after giving the waiter two twenties (I didn't have any 10s) for a $29 lunch. Uh, no, I ALWAYS tip 37%.
