I picked up a salad at Applebees carside last night. The total came to $9. I gave the girl $11 and told her to keep the change. She looked at the money and then at me and sort of  and said "Gee thanks" as she walked away. Now, all she had to do was keep and eye out for my car, get the salad from the kitchen and bring it out to me. I thought that $2 on a $9 was a decent tip but she made me feel cheap and stupid. Now I'm just a little mad, I should have snatched it away from her. Do you tip and is what I tipped OK or should I have given her more?

That's probably what I would of tipped her. So, I think it was the appropriate amount.

I think $2 was fine and she needs to get over herself.

I wouldn't have tipped, but a $2 tip on a $9 meal is more than 20%, so she should've been happy.

You gave her MORE than 20%!!! When you go in and SIT DOWN at Applebee's you give them 20% (if they did what they were supposed to do!) All she had to do was watch for your car and walk it out to you. I think you gave her MORE than enough! She needs to step off . . .!

ETA: Sorry, that may have been a little harsh towards the server--it's the rage seething beneath the surface!

I would have probably gone inside and asked to speak with a manager, tipping is not a necessity and she should be thankful you tipped her at all...There is no sense in someone acting like that

I would have been for getting my 2.00 back. That would have made me mad.I waitressed for years. For to go orders there were alot more that did not tip,we were always happy to get anything on to go orders.
:cool1:

Is it possible maybe she was surprised at the nice tip, maybe more than would be normal as a driveup, and the 'Gee thanks' was more of a startled good feeling than a downer? Just a thought.

Exactly, she should've been happy to get anything!! I'd probably complain to the manager...

I don't even tip at curbside, so I think the fact that you did should automatically give you extra points. The eyeroll would have earned a talk with the manager, IMO. It was both unprofessional and immature, and I probably would have taken the tip back as well.

Thank you guys. I was feeling really cheap, and the more I thought about it the more irritated I got. I don't mind tipping, it's cold out and had I been eatting there I would have left something but I just thought maybe what I had left it hadn't been enough.

Hadn't thought about it that way. Could be.

Gotta love the entitlement mentality. NOT.

You gave her more than enough. I tip 20% at a sit down restaurant.

What irritates me is when a waiter/waitress asks me if I want change. I realize that they usually don't know what bills I have to give them but on the flip side, I don't have to tip them either. I would prefer that they just say "I'll be back in a minute with your change". That way I have the option to say "I don't need any".

The other day I was at Sonic and my order came to a little over $8. The girl brought my order out, gave me $1 and took off before I realized that she kept my change. She never even gave me the chance to say "keep it", just assumed I would.

This was my 1st thought too. I always tip when I get a take out order from a sit down restaurant, but I've read threads that not everyone does. :confused3

I was thinking the exact same thing.

She should feel lucky, I don't tip for to-go orders.
I have to say I've never been sure what to do in these cases. Do you tip or not when it's to go? And is there a difference between curbside where at least they bring it to your car, and when you actually go in and pick it up? Do you tip then? I'm so confused...... :confused3
