2 Questions

1. We'll be going to WDW next month with a 2 1/2 yr old who has been toilet training for the past few months. She's got the bladder control down pat. BM's are another story. Any tips for getting this figured out before the trip? Or any big hints for dealing with BM training while at the parks and on vacation?

2. Has anyone used the special pass given to families with a special needs child? We have a 7 yr old dd on the autism spectrum and are wondering about this pass and how it might benefit our situation.

With our first DD it was quite a while before she got the BM thing down, and with travel and food differences I ended up using Pull Ups under her big girl undies for the trip. We didn't backtrack any, but I didn't gain ground either. Training for #2 took a lot longer than training for #1 in our house.

I don't have any experience with the potty training issue as we haven't done that yet . As far as the special passes for your autistic dd, if you don't get an answer here you may want to post on the DisABILITIES board . Just thought I'd share that!

Yes, come to disABILTITIES and do a search for Guest Assistance Card.
It's not a pass (which people think will give immediate access to rides/attractions). The Guest Assistance Card is meant to give CMs information about what sorts of special assistance is needed by someone with an invisible disability. In your case, that might be a place to wait that is away from the crowds, or, a lot of kids on the autism spectrum do better in line if they can stay in a stroller (it gives a portable, safe place and the hard plastic sides of some of them give firm pressure).

I can only speak for the potty training, but two ideas to jump start the bms are

1. Everyone Poops. Katherine loves to have me read this book to her. I think it helped her know that other people poop and its natural.

2. A video called Potty Training for him or her. Its annoying to parents but my girl loved the babies in it. She doesn't want to be a baby anymore. She wants to be a big girl.

oh and also when you change him/her put the poop from the diaper in the toilet and have the child flush it. Reiterate that this is where poop belongs. Its a step.

did ya see dr. phil potty trained two kids w/in a day? I guess its in his new book, but he had the kid teach a doll how to use the potty, everyone clapped for the doll. Then the kid is suppose to want that attention and use the potty himself. Then they throw a party for the child. But on the show there was no mention of bm's.

My daughter also seemed reluctant to give up pooping in her pull-ups. She did great peeing in the toilet and was wearing panties shortly after she turned 2 but it was a few months before I finally got her out of pull-ups when she was awake. She'd even get her own pull-up and puit it on so she could poop in it instead of the toilet. I finally tried getting something special for when she pooped. I bought a Dora the Explorer toilet seat and told my daughter she could only use it to go poop. I don't know if this was what did it but she gave up pull-ups in less than a week.

Does your daughter seem to be aware when she needs to poop? If so, you might have her wear panties most of the time and let you know when she needs a pull-up. I don't think vacation is a time I'd want to try to get a new skill mastered so if it doesn't happen before you go, relax and do what you can to have it cause the least interruption.

One last thought - see if it would help telling her that her favorite Disney character poops in the toilet. It might also help if you let her know she could tell that character what she can do as a "big girl" when she gets to WDW. What mom and dad think may not matter but if Cinderella will be impressed by the poop in the toilet, it might be just what is needed to give her that last push to give-up the pull-up.

My son is the opposite. He will poop in the potty (and gags afterwards) but not pee. Maybe its a guy thing??? I left his diaper off all one day and he never did anything (that I know of) in his potty, nor did he drink anything all day even though normally he drinks a lot. Im half tempted not to push the potty thing until after our cruise and Disney trip so I wont be dropping everything to find a potty (ie driving, waiting in line, etc).
