2 questions re: carry-ons

I am flying to San Juan in a couple weeks and hope to avoid checking a bag. Can anyone help?

1. I read a thread recently (I think on the CB) where someone commented that containers in your 3-1-1 bag had to have the size printed on them by the manufacturer. I haven't flown since early summer but have never had a problem using the plain travel sized bottles from Target and filling them with "my" shampoo and conditioner. Is this a potential problem?

2. I feel as though I have seen posts with people commenting that security and/or boarding agents wouldn't let a parent carry a small child's carry-on. Is this common? DD is 5 and will be able to handle her back pack for sure, but I am hoping to also pack her 16" Dora suitcase and I could see her struggling to A. lift it to the belt for the scanner and B. pull it down the ramp (or down the stairs for a Tarmac board) when boarding. If DH or I aren't going to be allowed to help her I want to know now.

Sorry if these are silly questions but this will be DDs first flight that I didn't just "suck it up" and check one bag. TIA:goodvibes

Not explicitly, but if you and the TSA agent disagree about whether an unmarked bottle is or is not too large, the TSA agent wins. Better to not take a chance.

I haven't heard anything about that, but perhaps I just overlooked those threads. I haven't seen it happen in person, but that may not mean anything.

Gotta agree with bicker on the second one. Figure it this way. ANY ticketed passenger gets the carry-on + personal item allowance, right? Well, when you buy a seat for your infant, no reasonable person expects that infant to carry his/her suitcase and diaper bag, right? So it's only reasonable that you should be able to carry your five year old's suitcase as well.

Completely untrue. Don't worry about this.

I agree with this and the other posts completely and have never seen this particular thing be an issue. However, I have seen individual gate agents make issues out of other random things for no apparent reason so there's no 100 percent guarantee that it couldn't be a problem. It's not one I would worry about too much, but I prefer to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I recently fly out of BWI around Thanksgiving weekend and the only thing they insisted each person, including young children (not infants) had to present their own boarding pass. But they did not have to carry their bags - could this be what you are thinking?
