We are thinking about buying into DVC and were wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to having 2 smaller points packages at two different home resorts as opposed to one larger package?

One important point that we learned after purchasing was the real advantages of the 11 month booking window at your home resort. For certain times of year this could be invaluable. If you have two home resorts you would have that advantage at two different resorts, but the points must come from that particular resort. With creative banking and borrowing, you can conceiveably acrue 300% of each resorts points for a particular reservation. The downside of two contracts is that points cannot be combined from each resort for a particular reservation until after the seventh month window has passed. The most valuable bit of information from these well informed posters is, buy where you plan to stay most. Hope this helps, help me out fellow dvcr's if I'm wrong.

Trying this again, just lost the first post I typed!!!

I guess that we are one of those families that own 2 smaller contracts at 2 different resorts. We originally bought 150 at BWV and then 2 yrs later, we bought an additional 100 at HH. This is what we could afford. I have yet to have a problem. We bought them both from Disney and our use yr is Feb. This is how I work it. I use the bank & borrow system, basically every year I am banking one of the 2 contract's points. One yr I will use 300 BWV points and the next yr I use 200 HH. I have yet to go to HH, our children are young and we feel that we should go to Disney every yr, so that's what we do. I love BWV and would love to stay there every yr, if the yr that I am using my HH points I can't get into BWV, I'll just go with OKW. As long as I am in Disney, I really don't care where I stay. When I go to BWV, we usually stay in a std studio, which is just fine by us. I think a lot depends on your tastes. We are ok with a studio, if you have to be in a 1 bdrm or bigger, you may want a bigger contract that can guarantee you that space. I also like to go for about 8-10 days once a yr, as opposed to taking multiple shorter trips throughout the yr. Airfare for 4 is only in the budget for once a yr. Did you understand all of this or did I lose you long ago??;) Most people talk about how important your home resort is and for some I guess it can be, but for me I do have preferences, but as I said above, as long as I can be in Disney, that's what matters. Now if you plan to go every yr during Easter or Christmas week, forget everything I said and go with the big contract because home resort is the key. The smaller contracts require more planning, but I am a plan freak who loves the challenge!!!

We have 3 home resorts........ but all are in the 170-270 point range.

Some contracts allow us to travel to that resort every year, while others (like our 170 point BCV contract) we bank every other year so we have enough points to get the room we want, when we want it.

A lot depends on how often you want to go...... where you want to stay and when you need to travel.

High season, 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom, at only your fave resort, then go with one large contract at that resort.

If you dont care when you go, what kinda of room you get, or where you stay, then two smaller contracts might work.

Soooooooooo Can you fill us in on your traveling desires....... room sizes, etc.......... That information often can answer your question!

Thanks for all the input! We really appreciate it.

Room sizes: Currently, there is just my husband and I, so we just need a studio. However, I want to make sure that we buy enough points for the future (i.e. when we have kids). I have heard that 270 points is the average.

Timing: We usually go during dream or choice times of the year. I suspect that we would vacation then too, when we have school-age kids. We live in Kansas City, so driving is time-consuming; so we typically travel to WDW once a year for 4-5 days. Again, with kids, I would think that more days would be necessary.

Let me know if there any details I am overlooking. Thanks!

It looks like you know what you need and want to do with points...

I don't see any problem with having 2 150 point contracts or even a 150 and a 120 or whatever. What is difficult is have a very small add on at a second resort. We have (don't laugh! I mean it!) 38 points at VWL. Boy, is that difficult to plan for! But we're managing. I'd sure love to have at least 100 more there (if not a 150 resale....) but, well, we have other obligations right now.

Our points total is 200 and we manage to get a lot out of it! Creative planning....and the fact that we like Adventure season.....makes the difference. But you need to get what will work for you. Our decision in the beginning was made by the amount of money we had available to us....if that's not an issue, definitely get however many points will allow you to do whatever it is you want to do.

A good plan might be to purchase half the # of points you need for a week in a 1br or 2br (depends on your planned family size/ preferences) in choice or dream season at each resort you want as a home resort....that way you can bank one and use one each year...alternating. It doesn't seem like you're overlooking anything!

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

We ended up purchasing 350 points at BWV through resale for a great price ($62/pt.) and Disney accepted our offer last week. Now onto closing...

GOOD LUCK AND SOON WELCOME HOME MISSYNDDA!

Glad to hear that disney accepted your bid of $62.00 a point.
