2 families, 2 separate vacation packages....how do reservations work?

We are heading to Disney during March with another family. We will each have our own reservation, but want to do some meals together...how would that work? Specifically, a CRT reservation....we will both be on the dining plan, so paying out of pocket upfront for the meal is something we both want to avoid when making reservations.....is there a way to link 2 separate families together on 1 dining reservation? Or do we each have to make our own?
