New to DVC, I have question about how having 2 different but overlapping DVC reservations affect ADR reservation windows

Scenario:
Our immediate family is reservation for 10 days (Party of 6)
I have a DVC reservation for my brother's family for 7 days (first day of their reservation is 3 days after we arrive) (Party of 3)

How does dining reservations work in regards to the reservation window? Can we make our reservations at the start of our 60+ length of trip (up to 10 days) window for our entire party (my immediate family plus brothers family)? I know we might have to make 2 reservations in certain restaurants since there would be 9 total. Or are we only allowed make reservations for just my immediate family. More than likely if 2 reservations are needed we would be mixed from both parties between the 2 tables.

or

Do we have to wait until my brother in law’s reservation window opens to make reservations for our entire party (my immediate family plus brother family)?

You’re not going to be able to get 9 anyway. I’d split into 4-3-2. You’ll need three adults from the main reservation. Leave the guests blank for now.

Once you have the reservation, anyone can show up and say they’re whoever. But the only one who can change it is the one who actually owns it.

Your brother’s reservation has nothing to do with yours. He has a later window. So you should use the earlier one and handle this.

another way to do this, if your room has spare space, would be to add a “new” person who you control. Get a keycard for that person, and he has the reservation. Don’t book someone in both rooms, that causes chaos.

To piggyback and answer your original question, you will be able to make reservations for your entire stay at 60 days out from check in day. You will be able to do this even with the overlapping reservations. The system will just see that you have a stay that spans that entire time period. We sort of did this over the summer when we had a 3 way DVC split over the course of 17 days. We also made a throw away reservation at Pop for the entire time period so that we weren't hit with the split stay ADR limitations. Since we had that one continuous stay it let us make 60+10.

This exact situation just happened to us. My friends arrive 2 days after us. We are a group of 11 total, so we broke it down to 6 and 5. We were able to get reservations close, but not at exactly the same time. We made sure we were linked in MDE and changed the lead guest. I’d you don’t change the lead guest the system will tell you your reservations are too close and try to make you cancel the other one. I was surprised it let us do it. Good luck!

We just did our 60 + 10 ADRs yesterday. For 2 nights in the middle of our stay we will be joined at the parks by offsite visitors. I easily made reservations for 7 people for those 2 nights & there are only 3 of us in our villa. You don‘t even have to fill in the additional guests as you make the reservation, so you should have no problem making reservations for the later arrivals as part of your group when your 60 day window opens.
I was surprised that the system let us do a double booking - my son and I were both booking & we ended up w/ 2 Space 220 reservations, one on day 66 the other on day 70, he grabbed an ADR to replace one of them & in the old days the system used to ask if you wanted to cancel your existing reservation - it didn’t yesterday, it let us book the second restaurant & I had to go in later and manually cancel the extra Space 220 reservation.
I would try for your whole party of 9 initially as one reservation, but if that doesn‘t work I’d split it into 2 ADRs maybe 6/3 or 5/4. I would not search for a party of 2 - in my test runs practicing in the days before our 60 day window opened searching for a party of 2 would yield no results or horrible times, but searching for a party of 3 yielded much better availability & times.
Given the reduced capacity of restaurants at present we prioritized our ADRs & arranged our schedule so that we were eating at really popular places later in our stay because w/ a 10 day stay you have a real advantage in getting places like Space 220 because most folks have stays shorter than 10 days. Out of curiosity after we got our ADRs we checked availability & it seemed up to day 65 availability disappeared very quickly, but days 66-70 were comparatively better.

Got it! Makes so much sense. Glad that worked for you. I feel better with how to handle the reservations now!!

Great tip with the lead guest. We would use the 2 adults on the longer DVC reservations for the 2 ADRs needed for our party size! Thank you!
