2-day ticket question

I'm contemplating a DL trip this fall and being a newbie to DL, I can't quite figure out why this is happening. If I go to the DL website, it tells me that a 1-day/1-park ticket starts at 104 dollars. A 2-day/1-park ticket starts at 118 per day. A 3-day/1-park is back to 104. Is there a reason I can't buy two 1-day/1-park tickets to save the 20 bucks? I feel like I must be missing something super obvious to people who go to DL!

Thats the per day price. The more days you do, up to a maximum of 5, reduces the cost per day

1 Day ticket = $104 Total
2 Day Ticket = $118 x 2 =$236 Total
3 Day ticket = $104 x 3 = $312 Total

Right but - I guess I don't understand why 2 days doesn't equal 208 (maybe it's just because that's what people want and they can charge it?).

It’s because the single day tickets have tiered pricing. They start from $104 but go up to over $200 (with parkhopper). The multi day tickets don’t as they take that into account. You will see that when you go to the next step, $104 single day tickets are a rare beast.

If you do a single day ticket, there are different tiers that allow you in on certain days and they currently range from $104 (off peak times Monday-Wednesday) to $154 (prime weekend days Friday to Sunday). Multi day tickets are worth it, especially in reserving the days you want to visit at a lower prices.

As an example, is you get a 2 day ticket and decide to go on a Saturday and Sunday, the price is $117.50 per day. Compared to a single day ticket for Sat/Sun at $154 per day.

I have that info in my Disneyland Resorts Planning and Information thread which is linked below. You mentioned you're a "DL newbie" so that thread below should really help you in your planning of your trip. I'm currently working on my recent Trip Report but once I'm done with that, I'll be updating the "Planning and Information" thread with a ton more info.

If you really wanted to buy two separate $104 tickets, it really limits the days you can attend based on the Tier System. The $104 ticket is the lowest tier and really limits you to which days those tiers are available. Just looking at it, here are the $104 days if you're interested....

August 24-25, 30-31
September 1-2, 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-29
October - Has no days available at $104
November 2-3
December - Has no days available at $104

So unless you're planning to go on one of those days, why not spend the extra $20 on a 2 day ticket and go whenever you want with no restrictions.

Got it. The dates I searched for had 104 for one day and 114 for the next (Sept 29 and 30). I'll just buy the 2-days - it just didn't make sense to me.
