We arrived at Grand Cayman on time around 6:30am the weather was partly cloudy, but the temperature was in the mid 70’s already and the wind was just a slight breeze. I was concerned because we have lost Grand Cayman before due to weather due, and it seems like it’s the least protected port. I was up on deck 10 to watch us pull into port, even though there is no “Port” and therefore no docking at Grand Cayman, I still wanted to see the approach to the island. There was one ship already anchored and four other cruise ships behind us arriving that morning. The Magic slowly pulled up to buoy which marked our parking spot. A very nice, private sailboat was moored about 200ft in front of where the Magic was parking, in was 6:30 in the morning, and the Magic drop it’s anchor. That must have been a heck of a wake up call, because the owner/skipper of the sailboat came running up on deck to see what the sound was. The Magic was completely stopped, but I’m sure seeing the bow of an 80,000 ton ship 200 ft away removed any sleep remaining in the boats skipper with a good rush of adrenaline. After he realized all was well, he checked his lines and went back below decks, although I’m sure he didn’t get back to sleep. Our cabin was on deck 2 forward, and I thought the anchor being lowered was going to be very loud, but Sandy said it was just noticeable in the cabin.

For those of you who don’t know, the island of Grand Cayman is right next to the Cayman Trench. This means the front of the Magic is in 80 feet of water and the depth at the stern is over 1,000 feet. Apparently there are only four berthing spots for cruise ships, so two of our neighbors could not anchor and had to manually keep their ships on station while the tenders transported their passengers to and from Georgetown all day.

We had no excursions booked in Grand Cayman this time, so we leisurely had breakfast at topsiders (outside of course) and went on shore after the “Open Tenders” where announced at 10:30am. We just shopped around the waterfront area in Georgetown and brought some souvenirs like the color changing t-shirts at Del Sol. We where back on the ship by 2pm.

The show that night was “Hercules”, and it’s a ‘must-see’ for our kids and one of our favorites also. I had noticed that the current group of performing in the Walt Disney Theater seemed like the best and most talented I had seen on the Magic, and we have enjoyed Broadway quality singing and dancing this week. In Hercules they performed flawlessly, but that’s not necessarily the best for this show. It seems they didn’t ad-lib or make the show their own. In the past parts of the show seemed more customized, if not outright spontaneous by the performers. This time it seemed all scripted, of course that could be all be just my perception since this was our fourth cruise. But we still enjoyed show and I still had a crush on the girl in the green outfit by the end (is that Pain or Panic?).

Dinner that night was the “Around the World” menu which is one of our favorites, not because the menu, but because it’s the only time Sandy and I get to dine to “Our Song”. We met in 1981 while we where still in school and working weekends in Fantasyland at Walt Disney World. So “Our Song” is the one we heard when we first met: “It’s a Small World”. Not the most romantic song, but it’s who we are, and it’s impossible to find a restaurant that will play it for us. So this is always a special treat for us, and an excellent way to remember when we first met.
