We have a 3nt Disney cruise planned and decided to stay a few nights prior and try Universal.

The kids are 11 and 8 and with flights ect we really only will have one day at the park. I'm thinking of staying at the Royal Pacific so we have the express pass and doing only single day at the studio only. Thoughts?
Also, I'm searching to purchase tickets on my own, who offers the best deal?

Any other tips for a first timer?

Not sure about single day tickets, but we got ours through Undercover Tourist for a discount. I've ready even preordering through Universal is cheaper than buying at the gates.
Depending on what time you get to the hotel you would get two days of EP even with a single night stay so it might be worth it to do two days. That said I'm new at this too and I'm not sure if EP is needed in February.

A few of these variables are going to be up to you and your budget. As pp said, you can use the express pass the day you check in and the day you check out, giving you two days of shortened lines. So you have the choice of a 2-day ticket, costs more than a one-day, but not double. And since you have limited time, the EP will come in handy, even in Feb. This way, you could do at least some of IOA (Hogsmeade!) the day you get to RPR.
