1st trip home was a disaster!

I haven't read all 5 pages but I wanted to let you know that we look obsessive with the Purrell (we use it after every ride where you hold on - after thousands of other people) and the biometrics is just gross. This year I got a new lotion that works for up to 4 hours - makes your hands soft too. I'm thinking this would be good for a little one that you can't really expect to not touch anything and to keep their hands off their faces (they just don't understand).

We told the waiter at Whispering Canyon Cafe how we got so sick on another trip there and he said that Disney used to use a spray sanitizer all the time but some people were allergic to it so they stopped using it and he has noticed many more people getting sick at WDW. I wish they would come up with some way to sanitize because nothing ruins the "magic" like someone getting sick.

I hope your little one is doing OK.

Thanks Barb45-can you please tell me the name of that lotion that works for four hours? Thank you, Tiger

Me too! That would be great!

Water fountains are also big incubators of strep. I have taught my children to not use water fountains. We always have our own water bottles with us.

The lotion is called Invisi-Guard (Hand Protectant Lotion). It is alcohol free and unscented so it is great if you are sensitive. I read the product info that comes with it and it kills tons of stuff. I just felt safer than the constant Purrell thing (which would be hard to use on a little one). We are going to use it in December when we take my grand daughter. Tiger926 - since you live in Windsor you can get it at Collodel Chiropractic on Dougall Ave. (in the Capri plaza). It was $6.00 for a 2 bottle set (one bottle is hand sanitizer that I don't like because it is kind of sticky and the other bottle is the lotion which I love so much).

Well add internet boards to fomites as a source of strep as well. Since I posted by brief Strep BIO, my DD (12) just came down with atypically presenting Strep. Low grade fever, + cough, no sore throat, no tonsilar exudate, no anterior cervical nodes, but a rip-roaring + rapid Strep!

It's only atypical if we don't test for it, I see similar cases every week including rash only, stomach ache only and the like. I hope your daughter does well, I guess she gets a long weekend.

I work in a clinic at a middle school and this is so true. The first question from the parents is "is the throat red or blistered" and we tell them that lately we are not seeing that with strep. Mainly just a stomach ache.

This thread reminds me of last year when my 4 year old decided to lick the entire length of the handrails in the line for It's a Small World. I think he covered about 20 feet before we realized what he was doing. I can't imagine the amount of germs he was exposed to.

Fortunately, none of our kids have ever have become ill while on vacation at WDW. Anytime you are in a public place with such a large number of people you cannot avoid being exposed to bactiria and viruses. Do your best to limit your exposure by frequent hand washing and use of sanitizers. Oh yeah, and don't lick the hand rails.

I'm confused - are you guys (greenban & rinkwide) making fun of the fact that I as well as many other posters have had horrible sick experiences with our families at WDW? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume not, but if so, that is extremely rude considering how scary our (and many others') experiences have been!

Tiger

I'm glad you gave me the benefit of doubt, because, I was just posting the FACT, that the day after I posted on this thread, my daughter did indeed get Strep throat (the atypical presentation), and wanted to update my original post describing the transmission of strep. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear. I think all of us were concerned about how severely ill your daughter was, and I had already posted, that I hoped she was doing well. I merely wanted to point out the coincidence that the day after posting on a thread about strep, my eldest child got it.

P.S. as always, Thanks Dean, Rachael (DD) is already afebrile, stomach pain resolved, and ready to roll. (So she's not happy about spending the weekend in bed <sigh>)

I love strep because it's one of the few things we have an almost magic cure for. Glad you daughter is doing better.

The other group of patients this reminds me of are the ones that have a positive strep but a lot of other viral symptoms where strep is obviously not the only thing going on. Most of these likely are carriers but could be a secondary infection as well. They are a difficult group to deal with because they expect to get well quickly and their course is more of the virus that is their main problem. And it's especially difficult if it happens to be mono and strep, not an uncommon combination.

My youngest DD just got over strep as well, and poor dear thing got another, more private condition after the antibiotics!!!! To the OP and others who have had probs at WDW I can really appreciate the agony and the hassle. I am so glad everyone is doing better now. I remember one Christmas when my DN became dehydrated after a bout of strep. My sister so mad at herself for not noticing it sooner. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

Anyway - I am going to do my best to keep the germs away on our next trip - i think i will get that lotion too!

Everyone in Ohio has been so sick lately, I can't believe there's anything we haven't had yet!!!!

:rotfl2: Sounds like something my four year old would do!
Once she picked off a piece of used gum from underneath a table at a restaurant and put it in her mouth and chewed it! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to GNC and buy some acidolpicous (sp?) it is the live culture found in yogurt but higher doses that is needed when on antibiotics. They have in in powder to mix in juice, chewable or capsules.

I think people are really sick all over right now but WDW WAS really bad last week when the OP was there. You'd be waiting in a preshow and it sounded more like you were in some wild epidemic in a hospital ward - it was gross!!

Sorry greenban about the misunderstanding - lack of sleep, stress, etc... I'm really glad to hear that your daughter is feeling better as well. My DD has made an amazing recovery, so we are grateful indeed!

Barb - you are right about WDW last week. The entire clinic and hospital emergency rooms were full of sick people last week, both adults and kids. We are probably never going to return at this time of year again, due to so much illness and inclement weather - we were probably the only ones who hung out in our resort away from the crowds. The germs were having a field day last week to say the least!

No one is making fun of your bad experiences, but come on, a little humor goes a long way! You gotta lighten up unless you plan to live in a plastic bubble for the rest of your life. If you truly have so many horrible ailments maybe you should reconsider your vacation spot. I mean if all of those other people's germs and smoking are going to make you deathly sick, WDW is not the place to go. WDW is full of germs. You gotta just deal with it and move on!

You mean that you're not supposed to chew that gum? <spitting out "free" gum>

Thanks Alexander for pointing out what a horrible parent I am for not finding humour in the fact that my baby was extremely ill. Shame on me! Also, thanks for making me feel guilty that my daughter and I have a few allergies/sensitivities that we have to watch out for - imagine me not wanting to contact other people's germs, how dare I be so unreasonable!

It's amazing to me how people can sit behind keyboards and pass judgment on people whom they don't even know. Unfortunately, this happens all too often on these boards.

Thanks again to those people who offered suggestions and tips for our next vacation, as well as your well wishes - at least some people on here are sensitive to other people's feelings - thank goodness for that!

I really do appreciate it, Tiger :sad2:
