We have never been on a cruise.

Need some help:

What size cabin? Family of 4, 2 kids 5 & 8
Ports-Do you have to leave the ship? Do all ports have easily accessible beaches?
Mexico-had some bad experiences there worried about kids.
Money-how much do you bring?
Clothing-dresses in the evening for women? Do Men need a jacket?

I hate big crowds which is why Disney World scares the bejesus out of me. Cruise sounded better.
I Love the theatre, movies, quiet time. Will I get any privacy on board?

Welcome to the Dis.

No you do not have to get off the ship at any of the ports.
You can do as little or as much as you want to do on the ship.
I have had plenty of private time.

You will need dresses for the trip for the dinners.
Men can get a way with docker slacks/polo shirts.
No jeans or shorts at dinner in any of the restaurants.
I do not know what cruise you are planning to take. I am about to do the Western and we have a formal and semi formal night.
I have never rented the tux or take formal dresses.

I just take a very nice black short velvet dress and wear it.
My boyfriend does not do suits or tux, and he wears dockers/polo shirt and they never bother him about it.

cash- we take a $500 and put the rest on credit cards for a week trip. Just depends on how you want to do your kttw card charges.

On the cabin size I would go to www.disneycruise.com and look at there website. I would say you could probably get away with cat 11 up to 8. If you are looking going the cheaper way.

We have no kids and we like to stay in a cat 5 room with a verandah, so we pay a little more.

I hope this helps if not just keep asking and reading the threads.

The smallest cabin (inside) can squeeze four people. It will be tight but we find that we only sleep and shower in the cabin. All other time is out on the ship having fun. Save the money to give to Disney at other places on the ship...photos, gift shop, pin trading, etc.:earsboy:

Pick the section in bold that applies before reading

7 day cruise: I'd suggest no less than 6 because of the verandah ( you will love it)

3 or 4 day cruise: try to get a cat 10 Secret Porthole Room (a cat 5 with no verandah but a porthole as in the description), if the SPH rooms are unavalible for a 3 or 4 day cruise try a cat 8 (no need for a verandah on this cruise however you will still want to see outside, you will still be on decks 5-7 plus, you get a split bathroom which is worth it however, you don't want to be on deck 1-2 were the cat 9's are!)

If you don't want to you do not have to leave the ship at all or for that matter your room all week but once you get on there you will find yourself leaving the room at 8 every morning and not coming back until 12 sometimes lol ;)

3 or 4 day cruise or a 7 day eastern cruise:You will not visit mexico.

7 day western cruise: You will not go to the mainland. I feel you should be fine what is there to worry about. (Try not to worry about anything on trhe trip remember this is your vacation, enjoy it!)

Not much because while on the ship you will use your Key to the World card. The only need for money is at ports where you should exchange it for local currency so you don't get ripped off by some really bad exchange rates at stores (like we learned at a wendys that they charge 32% for american exchanges)

7 day cruise: Normal clothes (t-shirts and jeans) are fine except for two nights. The first day is Sunday on an eastern or Monday on a western which is formal day. A dress is fine for a women and a suit is fine for a man. Kid should not get suits but instead wear 3 button golf shirts with dockers. The second is on thursday and is semi-formal night for this wear the same as the previous formal night. Of course if you want you could avoid this all by eating in your cabin if you choose.

3 or 4 day cruise: Normal clothes (t-shirts and jeans) are fine except for one night that is decided by you dining rotation. The night that you are in Tritons for this occation a dress is fine for a women and a suit is fine for a man. Kid should not get suits but instead wear 3 button golf shirts with dockers. Of course if you want you could avoid this all by eating in your cabin if you choose.

If you chose to you will have quiet private time. The whole cruise is up to you. It runs the way you want it.

Just got off the Magic - was concerned about Mexico also. Did the local Ruins and Beach tour. Tour guide spent too much time talking. When we finally got to the beach at 3:15 pm they told us we had to be back on the bus at 4:45 pm. My family decided that we will close the place (6 pm) and take a cab back on our own.

Suggest that you take a cab (across from pier) to Playa Del Sol ($15 US each way) - pay the general fee ($8 US) to get in and spend the day at the beach. Kids will love it. Plenty of cabs returning back to the ship.

Have been on the 4 night to Nassau and the 7 night Eastern and 7 night Western.

I have NOT seen a beach that I would want to spend the day with my family at that we could walk to from the ship. Research the beaches on the cruise you are going on and rent a cab to take you there and back again.

On the islands there are many nice beaches that are a short cab or bus ride away.

DCL has excursions to some of the beaches and you know that these will be "safe" places to go, with facilities.

You probably can get a first hand review of every beach at every port of call here on the DisBoards. Just ask!

The nicest beach of all is at Castaway Cay on the last day of your trip. It's a small glimps of heaven.

We were on a 7 day eastern cruise last month. We have 2 kids (5 and 9). We had a cat 9 on deck 2 and were perfectly happy with it. It was divided in the middle with a sitting area (during the day) and a sleeping area. In the evening the room host came and turned the sitting area into a sleeping area for the kids. (couch turns into one bed and another pops out of the ceiling). There is also a curtin divider in the middle of the room. The bathroom is also split. (shower/sink and toilet/sink) The cat 9 had a large port hole. We originally wanted a veranda, but the extra cost was not worth it to us.
