We are planning our first DVC trip in May 2008. We have previously stayed at WL in Nov 2005 & Nov 2006. This time we are bringing Grandpa along.

We were planning on getting a 2BR at OKW. I decided on OKW after reading a lot of posts on this board. Is the 2BR really necessary? I was looking for some opinions on 1BR vs 2BR. My main objective is to have everyone be comfortable, and happy! I will be traveling with DH, DS6, DS3, & Grandpa (my dad, whom adores DH).

Also, How kid-friendly is OKW? What section would be the best for kids?

Thanks for the help & the opinions,
Robin

My father travels with us also since my Mom died. He loves my DH too- sometimes I think more than me!! We are very lucky. He is 76 and set in his ways. I only have one childe DS 11, but we get the 2 BR so grampy can get away from us - to his own TV, quiet space.

The only thing he didn't like at OKW was the lack of sidewalks up near the hospitality house where our villa was. It was close to the main pool, but a little dangerous crossing the street.

We are returning this summer to OKW with Grampy and my sister and her family. We have 2 - 2BR's.

I think, yes, a 2 bdrm is necessary. As the last poster mentioned, that'll give Grandpa some private space; it will also give you an extra bathroom which will come in handy.

As far as location, we like the Turtle Pond area. There is a very nice quiet pool and game room there, along with a snack bar that's open seasonally. You can still walk or take a bus to the feature pool and Hospitality House. Have a great trip.

I agree, with 5 people that 2nd bathroom will be very appreciated.

I would have to agree with the previous posters. We just stayed in a 1BR at OKW over the holidays (me, DH, DD15, DS11) and although the 1BR had plenty of space for the 4 of us, I really missed the 2nd bathroom when we were trying to get ready.

As for the resort being kid friendly, all I can say is that my son loves the slide at the main pool. It was too cold for us to swim while we were there and he said he missed going down that slide.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip.

If you get the 1 BR someone is sleeping on the sofa - you don't say how old or mobile grandpa is but if that would make a difference then the 2 BR will give you 3 real beds. If not and you can do with one bathroom a 1 BR will certainly save some points. With the additional love seat in the living area a small child can sleep there although it does not pull out. We just put a couple of the chairs against it to keep the child from falling off. We have also used the cushions off the chair to make a bed on the floor which the kids decided was the best yet. You would need to have an extra sheet and blanket or sleeping bag as Disney does not provide extra linens. You will have a TV in the living room and in the MB and also the full laundry. In our family the big issue is the extra bathroom. Also if you do go with a 1BR ask for a unit in a building with a number 30 or higher as there is access to the bathroom through the laundry room as well as through the MB so someone sleeping in the living room does not have to go through the bedroom at night if they need to use the facilities. I would request the turtle pond area as the quiet pool and kids play area is nice there and of course you can always go to the main pool if you want the slide.

Thanks so much for all the replies!!!!!!!

Grandpa is 75 - extremely mobile - high energy. He hasn't been on a vacation in years - so I didn't want to put him on a sofa sleeper & risk it being lumpy or uncomfortable for a week. I think the idea of two bathrooms is probably good, too, especially with the kids.

Thanks again for all the info!!!!!!!!!

You know that OKW only has three buildings with elevators, right? Most of them require you to take the stairs. If that won't be a problem, you should be fine.

Due to a bad fall (attic to garage floor--LONG story) DW has problems with one ankle/leg (it's about 2" shorter than the other one). As a result, she doesn't do stairs well and walks with a noticeable limp.

On our last trip to OKW we requested one of the "elevator buildings" (62, 63, and 64, I think).

Imagine our suprise when we got our request, but were given a ground floor room!

That said, if your family members need the elevator for access to a 2nd or 3rd floor villa, request it, or request a ground floor unit. If not, leave it for someone who needs the extra assistance.

I would recommend the 2 bedroom because It has more privacy for your family and Grandpa. with 2 bedrooms you can put the little ones down and still stay up and enjoy the night. Also, if grandpa is willing to watch the lil ones then you can go out for dinner 1 night
