19yo who fell off a hotel balcony in Orlando

Wow...........so very sad for the family. You would think that the hotels would have high enough railings on balconies to prevent falls............

My condolences to the family.. How horribly tragic..:sad1:

Unrelated to this particular tragedy, but one day last week or so I turned on my computer (home page is Yahoo) and there was an article about the "The Most Dangerous Places" for unsupervised teenagers and college Kids to go on winter or spring break and Orlando rated the most dangerous of them all!!

I was really, really surprised.. Here in the U.S., I would have thought maybe Daytona Beach - or Fort Lauderdale - but not Orlando! Still shaking my head over that one..:confused3

I'm kind of surprised by that, also. :guilty:

I feel so bad for the family, especially the grandparents. I know if I let my son go on vacation with my parents I'd think he was totally safe. Tragedy all around.

The mother is taking a much needed leave of absence. She was so helpful to us when my son had some schedule issues, a true caring person who loves the teens she works with. I can only imagine what kind of amazing Mom she was! I feel the absolute need to reach out to her, I know the pain of losing a child and know she is devastated.:sad1:

I will keep all of Shane's family in my thoughts and prayers~ what a horrible tragedy. :sad1:

Generally when you read about a teen/early 20's kid falling from a balcony it's because they were engaging in risky behavior like climbing from one balcony to another or standing on the railing.

It sounds like that was not the case in this fall, especially since he was vacationing with his grandparents, not a crowd of teens. I don't exactly understand how a seizure would cause this, I'll look forward to more info on this. I can't imagine his mother's pain, How very sad.

I can completely understand how this tragedy can happen. My nephew, age 28, passed away unexpectedly from a seizure last February. To make a long story short, he was in his apartment on the phone with his brother, and EMT did not get there in time.

My heart goes out this family. I don't think my sister, her husband and her other son will ever be the same.

It depends on the type of seizure. Some seizures seem as if the person is simply passing out. If this person was leaning on or over the railing of the balcony when the seizure happened, his body weight could carry him over the railing. My thoughts are with his family...
