19 Iconic Products that America doesn't make anymore

Sadly, I also know MANY people (actually know them--not just heard of them) who are out of work, even long term, and are doing things like filling bankruptcy to get our from under a home loan and credit card debt while keeping a newer, bigger (just bought) home and DVC in a S/O's name, taking vacations and putting them on credit cards even thought they have been out of work for months (and have failed to pay utility bills and the kids are getting free lunch at school), people who have been out of work for months and are begging for help from family/friends/church but consider cable TV and dance lessons for the kids to be essential items that they pay before then begging for help to make the mortgage payment, people who COULD have a job by now but refuse to relocate--not matter how dire the situation is where they live, etc. To some extent we as a society (with obvious exceptions--it is never all or nothing) has gotten spoiled and thinks what we should have to do to take care of ourselves is less than what we used to think and what we have to have to survive is more.
Good points!

And let's not lose sight of the underlying issue: These people are in dire straights, in part, because they and others aren't willing to pay more for otherwise-the-same American goods. So it is truly a vicious cycle: One person goes down the side-trail (saving themselves money by buying a comparable foreign good made by folks making a lot less than Americans make) thinking little of it. Well that takes that much work away from American workers. Multiply. Now people have lost jobs as a result of it. So more people go down the side-trail. Yet-even more jobs lost. And so on. This is, inescapably, a death spiral. All paths now are painful: Either accept the ever-decreasing average standard-of-living that will be imposed on Americans, as more and more of us end up unemployed, or accept the ever-decreasing average standard-of-living that will be imposed on Americans, if we turn around and start paying a premium for otherwise-the-same American goods. There are no other paths. :confused3

Bicker--I got that that was your point and wondered why Toad seemed to be arguing with you by supporting you myself:confused3

Must have been the massive headache I had all day yesterday. I wasn't thinking clearly. I've gone back a re-read everything with a clearer head today. :thumbsup2

Don't DIS with a headache. :rotfl:

I am glad the headache is gone:goodvibes It did seem out of character for you (some people like to argue jsut to argue but you generally know which side of an issue you are on:thumbsup2)

The question is whether or not you'll pay more for American sneakers, even though they're not more or less comfortable than foreign sneakers. Pay approximately 30% more just because they're American. And not just for sneakers, but for everything, without excuse, without equivocation, without exception; and not just you, but practically everyone.

No, I don't think people will. I have bought specific things because they were made in America (actually, because they were made by my BIL's employer, and once that manufacturer shut down their last American plant and moved all production overseas, I crossed them off my list) but I am not willing to spend more for the same quality for everything I buy.

Hey, I'm adding Sara Lee baked good to icons that are gone.

While it appears (for right now) the US bakeries will remain, part of the company was sold to a bakery company based out of Mexico City.

Yeah, it's Bimbo. They already own Boboli, Entemann's, Arnold/Stroehmann Breads. I will say that our local BJ's has been carrying the Bimbo brand bread, and it's actually really good. I've also had some of my Mexican friends introduce me to some of Bimbo's snack cake brands (Maranella, or something like that). Growing up near Philadelphia, I'd never go against Tastykake, but the Bimbo stuff is pretty good!

It still makes me sad. :guilty:

I agree; I don't think people will either. That's the problem; that's why things are the way they are and why they'll be the way they're going to be. It is why employment in the United States will become a bigger and bigger problem over time and why our reasonable focus on the economy will eventually turn away from who does the best job fostering growth and prosperity and instead we'll be focused on who will do the best job slowing the rate of decline.
