18" Of Space in Mission Space??

I read on another board that there was only about 18" of space on either side, front or back in the Mission Space enclosure. Egads!!

Here I was concerned about getting dizzy but if this is true I will never be able to stand this ride. :sad2:

It is very tight in the cabins. I would say 18" is about right. The screen comes in very close and if you are claustraphobic this might be one you want to sit out.

I too am very clausterphobic and I was concerned. But I rode it 2 years ago and rode it 4 times. I didn't feel panicy at all. They have cool are blowing on you so you don't feel clausterphobic. I rode it several times last year also. I love this ride!

You come in and sit down and there is ample space. Then, you place the bar over your head and the machine closes with the controls and screen swinging down and in front of you. I am not claustrophobic and the first time I rode it a few weeks ago, there was a slight disturbance in the force with me, but I got over it. If you do just look straight ahead and start fiddling with the buttons in front of you, you won't notice the tight quarters.

That's why I wouldn't ride the "sissi" version last year. I walked right up to the cabin, saw how tight the space was and told the CM-no way. Then I exited and visited with the nicest CM-who doesn't like Mission Space!!

Mission Space Green was the only ride that really bothered me in all of WDW. I felt very panicky when they closed the doors and I realized just how small it was inside there. I kept my eyes closed most of the time (except for when it was time to push the control buttons ;) ). The funny thing is the first time I rode it, I didn't feel too bad. The second (and last) time really got to me. I kept trying to picture big open spaces during the ride. Luckily for me, I had ridden it before so I knew what was going to happen and when I was getting close to the end. I am so glad I didn't ride the Orange version. I read posts that said if you close your eyes on the spinning version you get very sick :guilty: I have ruled out EVER riding this again! It really was that bad for me. I also thought it was kinda deceiving because it is bigger until right before the ride starts. If you are claustrophobic, when you pull the harness down and they "close" the capsule up it is awful. By that time, I thought it was too late to get off (maybe it wasn't but I didn't try).

I am claustrophobic and when they closed the front in, I thought it was the end of the world. I feel it is important to try and overcome your fears but the thought of a mechanical problem and getting stuck in MS with the front closed has kept me from returning.

I've never felt claustrophoibic before, but that ride almost did it to me.

There are four seats, right next to each other, and yes, you are totally enclosed in the capsule, restrained, and the 18" figure sounds accurate to my experience.

Never again, LOL.

BINGO.

That's my same exact fear, and again, I've never felt claustrophobic before.

If that thing got stuck, and I was in there for an hour, I'd be one very unhappy camper. I could handle being stuck on a coaster, or any other ride, but that risk (however remote) just keeps me from enjoying M:S.

Yes, it is probably only 18 inches of space. When you get on the ride the entire capsule is spread apart, looking sort of like a big metal box opened. You get in and sit down easily. Then the box is closed, and the front dashboard is moved up and foward so it is right in front of you -- put your arm out in front of you now and keep your elbow relaxed - not straightened. This is about how far away the screen and dash are from you.

This is one ride at WDW that I am not too crazy about.

I feel sorry for the real astronauts if this is all the space they are given.

Folks, you could not get "stuck" in there.
The capsule doesn't "go" anywhere to get stuck.

The front panel (and side doors) can be PUSHED/PULLED open by hand.

Like the shoulder harnesses in AE/SGE, the mechanical apparatus can be moved out-of-the-way by manual pressure.

not much room, keeping focused on the video helps.

Once it starts spinning, the close quarters are a good thing. You can't help but look at the screen (it's right in front of your face), so you don't feel as if you're spinning.

WOW! Thanks for the pics...I've been soooo chicken to ride and the pics help with the visuals...Still debating... :confused3

The capsule certainly does move, and while I don't think anyone would get "stuck" in there permanently (obviously this is not what anyone is talking about here), any number of mechanisms could possibly keep you in that capsule longer than the duration of the ride. That would be unpleasant for many.

Now, is this may be an irrational fear to you, and may not be likely, but that doesn't make it any less possible for someone who fears close spaces to have an issue about it. I don't fear closed spaces, yet my experience on that attraction was not pleasant and I won't be returning because of these factors, so I can only imagine what it would do to people who have concerns on other attractions.

You were the one who said "stuck for an hour".

Its just not possible for the capsule to "go" anyplace that it can't be opened (manually or otherwise) if there is a "failure" of some kind.

I'm not a claustophobic person and little scares me, but the first time I went on this ride(original version) and that panel came down, I thought what have I gotten into. But, the cool, blowing air helps and I wasn't about to show my fear to my kids. I just kept stressing how "cool" everything was. Of course, my 6 and 8 yo loved it and we ended up riding it 11 times. Husband however rode it it once and has vowed to never do it again! You'll never know until you try it once.

You would think so.... but we got stuck on Soarin for 15 minutes a couple of weeks back....they couldn't get the seatbelts undone because the computers thought the ride was still in motion. It was kind of scary when the canopy lifted when we still in the air. That ride had real problems that trip including the video giving out.
Actually MS does go somewhere. MS is like one of those carnival spin and puke rides that just goes around and around after it gets lifted up. There is always the possibility, however small, of it going up and not coming down.

Well, it's going to have to be a big SKIP for me. Pity, because I like the basic idea. :sad2:

I wonder how many more people would ride if they made it a bit more roomier???
