I am SO excited about taking my daughter to Disney World this December. She'll be 18 months old, which I'm hoping is a good age.

We purposefully planned the trip to be during the Christmas magic because it's my absolutely favorite time of the year to go to Disney. :santa:

However, I've never been with a little one. Can other, more experienced parents chime in on which Christmas-themed attractions, shows, etc. would be interesting/ appropriate for an 18 month old?

18 months is a great age.... they won't remember much in a year, but they absolutely enjoy every second in the moment!!
My little ones at that age loved the dance parties with the characters. Didn't want to be near them, but wanted to be in the vicinity :)

How close to Christmas do you plan to go? If you are there right before and after Christmas, the crowds will be at their peak. Parks close each morning because they are full. Pushing a stroller through those crowds can be very difficult.

Agree with Deb and Bill. Going earlier in the month of December is a great time and we have enjoyed that time a lot. Over and right after Christmas; no way would I take a small child. We were there the week of New Years a a couple years ago and that was pretty crazy and the CMs laughed and said this was empty compared to the week before.

As far as activities go, we enjoyed touring the resorts and seeing the gingerbread houses and decorations. We did one or two character meals where they were dressed in holiday attire. We did the MVMCP but would not do that with a baby unless you know she would be happy staying up till close to midnight. I love the candle light possession, its much like a Christian Christmas Eve Service, and the Osborne lights are very neat.

What time in December? If it's early December and the crowd levels are low, go for it! If it's late December, you might want to weigh your options. If you are in the parks during Christmas week, it will be so crowded that you will have difficulty navigating a stroller during peak hours. If your granddaughter is a runner, those crowds are frightening. Get trip insurance, just in case you realize closer to your travel date that it may be more effort than it is worth.

The most important factor in your ability to enjoy the parks will be your ability to "go with the flow" in the mind of a toddler. My daughter started walking everywhere at 18 months, and between 18 months and 30 months, just going to the mall or a grocer store was a chore because she wanted to get out of her stroller and walk on her own. She rarely went in the direction we needed to go. We had a lot of mandatory hand-holding, and a few public tantrums. If your granddaughter is a good follower, it will be much easier on you. How energetic is she? If she is comfortable spending hours in a stroller, that will be easier for you too.

I'm sure you and your granddaughter will have a great time enjoying time together and all the age-appropriate shows and attractions. I do have to express caution about how you can cope with all the "non-entertainment" time, like waiting in lines, eating in noisy restaurants, walking through parking lots, etc. All can be frustrating, especially during Christmas week.

FYI, I had a great time taking my daughter to various Disney parks at age 5 months, 13 months, and 3 years, plus several times since. I did an adults-only trip when my daughter was 2 years old, with no regrets.

I can totally see how the characters would be both intriguing and slightly terrifying to a little one. We'll try to see how she reacts to a face character before pushing her to do anything more. But a dance party with them might be a great way to start things off! :) She's very open right now, and LOVES anyone, so it will be interesting to see if that changes over the next few months.

Luckily, we're going the first week of December. I made the mistake one time of being in on the parks the first Saturday that K-12 students were out for the Christmas break, and it was MISERABLE! I cannot imagine pushing a stroller through all of that!! I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible this trip, so we're going at a time that will be calm and relaxing.

Oooh, hadn't thought of the gingerbread houses--will definitely need to put that one my list!:thumbsup2 (Though, given my daughter's voracious appetite, she will probably try to eat them!!)

We'll have to call it on MVMCP closer to the trip: right now, she's a night owl and could power through with a nap in the afternoon, but that could definitely change between now and then.

I love the candlelight processional, too! My daughter is definitely a wiggler, though, and I'm not sure if she would sit through it without wanting to leave halfway through. I haven't been to the candlelight processional in a few years--I wonder how long the run time is?

We'll definitely be approaching this trip a differently than the rest. We're usually GOGOGOGO the entire time, but we know that we'll have to make compromises since our daughter will be there.

Our DD is pretty energetic already at 8 months, but who knows how her personality will change between now and then.

I'm a little worried about tantrums and the toddler personality coming through, but we're also going with DD's grandparents (my parents) and her aunt (my sister). So, if DD starts to act up, one of us can always remove her from the situation until she calms down.

We're also staying away from sit down restaurants (because I think the fun/ magic would be lost on her at this age), and going with mostly counter service (something quick and easy!).

You're right, though--Disney can be enjoyed by just about anyone at any age, given the right expectations. I feel better knowing that my parents are going with us. They somehow wrangled my sister and I through the parks when we were super tiny (the first time we went as a family of four, I was 3 years old and my sister was 6 months old), so I feel like they are babies-in-a-theme-park vets! :cool1:

I took my son last May when he was 20 months old. We went with my mom, sis, niece (6) and nephew (10) and our husbands happily stayed home. My son is the energetic type, always on the move and was an early walker (9 months). By 20 months he didn't enjoy being strapped in strollers, but did okay in it at WDW. He did manage to undo the seat belt and crawl out a few times, but we were watching him like a hawk and he never got away.

Some people are against them, but with my guy we also used a harness. I just got a cheap, plain one as I didn't think he'd like having one of those cute backpack-types on. I also wasn't sure one of those would be comfortable when he was in the heat and in the stroller sleeping. Didn't want something that had to go off and on a lot. The harness worked well for us, we didn't use it all the time, but it kept my little runner safe and he had some independence (in his mind at least).

Character-wise, he did very well. He didn't sit still to watch movies at that age and would only stop to watch Disney Jr shows when they were singing. But he knew some of the characters and met Jake (from Jake and the Neverland Pirates) first. My son kept peaking around the corner to see Jake while we were in line, so I knew he was interested. But he held back when it was our turn. I picked him up and held him while we met Jake and got the photos and that worked well for us. Same thing later that day when he met Sorcerer Mickey. By the next day when we saw the 'regular' Mickey at MK, my son seemed awestruck. He kept pointing and saying 'Mee Mouse' and tried to run to him. When it was his turn, he walked up by himself and just looked at Mickey. Priceless pictures and special memories for me.

Each kid is different, but I think characters are worth a shot. It may work best with you holding your child as she gets acclimated. He loved the rides, learned a bunch of new words while we were there and enjoyed himself. We had a couple of toddler meltdowns, they were caused by fatigue and the heat and we were on our way back to the resort when they happened. The older kids had one or 2 meltdowns too ;)

He doesn't usually sleep in strollers, but we wore him out that trip and he did sleep in it several times. We usually went back to the room mid-day for a break. The older kids swam, I tried to get my son to nap and we all took a break from being out in the heat.

I look forward to a return trip in early Dec 2015 with my son and DH. I've always wanted to see the Christmas decorations!

We just came back from a Christmas trip where my DD turned 2 on the trip. She likes the live action sing along songs that take place at WDW and Disneyland like this one:

There are a few others like this on Amazon - DD watched these before our trip and she knew that the characters were bigger than her. She even told me before the trip that Mickey was big. She wasn't scared of the characters on the trip.

She liked:
Osborne lights
Snacking around the world in Epcot
Meeting characters
it's a small world
Tomorrowland speedway
Barnstormer
Carousel
Playing on the beach at the Contemporary
Running thru fountains at DTD

We only did 1 sit-down also. We didn't do any character meals, and it turns out we met all the characters we wanted to with barely any wait (and this was Christmas week).

We didn't go back for naps, since DD doesn't take a nap every day anymore, but she did fall asleep a few times in the parks. We did leave the parks in the afternoon though and went to the beach, DTD, and resort touring. At the Contemporary we saw Chip and Dale dressed as toy soldiers and Santa on Christmas Eve. Not sure if they are there in early December, but this turned out to be a great place to get characters/Santa with almost no wait!
