17 Days, Family O' 6, $3160.00 Budget**TRIP REPORT on pg 26**@Now with Pics!@

I read through this entire thread, and I am perplexed to say the least! From everything that I've read, it seems as if the OP uses tons and I mean tons of coupons during her regular grocery trips. This saves money, but it must also take up a lot of time. I guess you know your family best, and you also know how to work your budget, but I absolutely don't understand how you are going to feed 6 people on $26.00 per day even serving the packaged, processsed foods that you mentioned such as Macaroni & Cheese, hot dogs and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. This type of food is not nutritional whatsoever, so with long hot days in the parks, I worry that you all are not going to be eating properly. Processed and packaged foods, or fast food (since you mentioned McDonald's many times) doesn't sit well in young bellies, not to mention hot and tired young bellies. I think you should seriously reconsider your food budget since you are planning a very long trip, which means that you all need to be feeling well and energetic, and no offense, but these types of foods are just going to make you all more tired and cranky.

From the sounds of it, you are relying heavily on coupons, and I must say, after shopping in Publix and Goodings in Orlando, there is no way that you are going to be able to feed your family on $26.00 per day. I live in Canada where a loaf of bread is almost $2.00, Kraft Dinner is over a $1.25 per box and milk is $5.00 per bag - these prices do not include tax - and I thought the prices in Orlando were high. Hopefully you'll have emergency money in your budget as I really think that you are going to need it to buy extra food.

Lastly, although I don't know the OP, and I almost hate to post this, but after reading your post it hasn't sat well with me at all, so here goes. I would hope that your desire to make this budget doesn't come at the cost of your children's appetites - you would hate for your children to remember this "dream" vacation not because they met Mickey Mouse, but because they were hungry.

I don't like to use crystal light because I worry about the nutra sweet in it(it also really bothers my stomach). But I have thought about taking koolaid and premixing it with sugar and using that.

Tink, I hadn't thought of that, although I should have. I have a friend who gets horrific headaches from nutrasweet. Good thinking about the kool-aid 'though.

Also, I just wanted to give a big cheer for you :cheer2: for encouragement. I'm anxious for the trip report and I think that you're doing a great job (not that it matters what anyone else thinks!)

Finally, have you used getravelop before? I'm very interested in that and we qualify so I'll be anxious to hear how it went for you.

My goodness! :earseek: I only listed a few nonperishable items that I could easily bring. We would only eat MacNCheese 1 time per week and I never mentioned hot dogs I hate them because who knows what's in them. I don't recall saying I plan to starve my children, either. I have also shopped at Publix and it certainly isn't as expensive as the items you've listed. It maybe hard for some to fathom having to budget but for those of us who have to on a daily basis it is possible!! To acuse me of neglect is harsh at the least!!! Apparently you missed the thread about using my normal at home budget to do the big shop when we arrive. If you include my normal weekly budget it would take the daily total to 36.71. We will have transportation and will be able to get back and forth to our condo rather easily. As far as spending a lot of time couponing, I only spend max of 45 minutes a week. Once you know what you're doing it doesn't take long at all!! Please try not to judge others!

You forgot dailiy parking costs at the parks (unless you are taking a bus)---that is $8 per day.

Other wise--cool budget...would love to see your actual costs versus planned costs--then you will indeed by Queen of the Budget Board ;).

Great idea! I love reading everyone's budget when the post it, and in my mind try to see how it fits with what we are going to spend. But it would be really interesting to see the 'plan' and the 'actual'. I don't remember anyone posting that after posting a 'planned budget'.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but since the hurricanes last year most of the zoos and aquariums have changed their reciprical policies. Instead of free admission, most are now 50% off admission. I belong to a zoo here in Florida, that's why I wanted to mention this. I know my zoo is now 50% off instead of free...same with the Melbourne Zoo.

I think it depends on the Zoo--Lowry is free for me (We are members of Melbourne) as is Jax Zoo..but the Tampa Aquarium is 50%.

TNK--you should get your list from your zoo and it will tell you which is which.

I'm still on Page 3---but TNKBELL....Parking costs? Lots of posts--but no idea if you added it to your budget :).
Yes I know I have been thinking on that one too. I did totally forget that in my budget, that's why I posted it so you bright and friendly(mostly) disers could point out my mistakes and forgotten things! :cheer2: My question is: When purchasing MYW tix, does that include the use of WDW transportation? I know if you are at Mk you can hop on the monorail and go to Gf or Poly or C. So my thinking is that if it is included(I like to be legal) than we could park at DTD and ride the buses to the parks, thus eliminating the park cost. Otherwise I will just have to pay for parking at 8.00 X 10=80.00. I will have to trim my budget somewhere...Hmmm Maybe I could only allow the DKS just one small meal of bread and water per day? :rotfl2: TOTALLY KIDDING!!! Several of you have mentioned Priceline I will definately be giving that a try, my question is when should I try to book our rooms? Should I wait until a few weeks or days til our trip? Thank you for all the help!! :sunny:

Yes I have a list and Lowry is free and also Mosi is free with our science center pass and also Orlando science center. Thanks for keeping me on my toes! :wave2:

Yes I promise I will post a budget of my actual expenses when I return even if I must admit defeat! I am hopeful and excited!! :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Hey there! I think that you have to be staying onsite to use Disney transportation but I may be wrong.

Looks like you started QUITE the thread here!!! lol Don't feel like you have to justify yourself to everyone :sad2: . You sound like a GREAT mom who is trying to give her family a GREAT vacation!!! Not everyone can afford a deluxe resort and meal plan! Do what's best for you and remember to take everything with the proverbial grain of salt!!!

That said, you DID ask for opinions and it looks like you have gotten some terrific suggestions! I dont have many b/c we are going for our first famil y trip to WDW in 9 days!!

Have a wonderful time!!!!!!!!!! :flower: :flower: :flower: :flower:

The buses don't run to the parks from DTD. They go to the resorts and water parks.

You are entitled to use Disney transportation with the purchase of Disney admissions. But parking at DTD is not a good idea. The parking there is very limited - we have shopped, eaten and gone to Pleasure Island there on a number of occasions and finding parking has never been easy.
And then the transportation to and from DTD to the parks is not efficient. The transportation is primarily meant for travel from park to resort and visa versa. Traveling between resorts and from parks to DTD is not easy.
I think that budgeting the extra $8 a day would be your best bet. :)

Our last trip to Disney was a very budget trip for us (after a very non budget trip 6 months earlier). We are DVC members and had annual passes so our costs were way down. As for food we spent $100 at Publix. I took my coupons, but a lot of them were useless because the brands are different down there. This included diapers, wipes, sunscreen and most of our toilitries. Actual food and beverages were probably $50. Most days we ate 2 meals in the room (breakfast and dinner). Our total bill at Checkout was $381. This was for 8 days, included all of our souviners, food and snacks. It would have been less if I packed pb&j for the kids like I normally do, but since I was already cooking 2 meals a day he said to just buy the kids meals.

We eat breakfast in the room, I pack snacks and drinks in a cooler (I have a system down to keep them cold all day long). A several days we did the 1/2 chicken meal from Cosmic rays (there's also one in Animal Kindgdom, I don't know what it's called). This meal is by far the best deal at disney (and my dh's favorite). It's like $8 and it can feed 2 adults and one kid. We usually get one of those, with a side of fries or potatoes, give a kid a drumstick and some potatoes. The other kid doesn't eat chicken so we give him snacks I have packed or maybe a kids meal that they share. We drink soda/water/juice I brought in. Total cost for 2 adults and 2 kids less than $15.

As for what I cooked for that $100. We had pancakes, cereal, eggs, bacon, OJ, milk, toast etc for breakfast. Dinner we had hamburgers & fries, spaghetti, corn, & garlic bread, taco's and spanish rice, chicken breasts and rice. If we could drive our food cost would even less as I could bring more staples from home. It adds up when you have to buy a thing of syrup or ketchup that you only need for 1 or 2 meals (and pay full price LOL).

Just had to say for those of you who think TNK is going to be starving her children (which is just silly) and can't see how one would eat for less than$xxx a month, check out the books Saving Dinner and Feed Your Family on $12 a Day. Now, I don't think I quite make the $12, but I know I just about faint if my grocery bill is over $80 and I only go every other week. I do buy canned, boxed and milk at Walmart, but I still spend $250 or less every month on food and my family eats all the recommended servings of fruit, vegetables and milk that they are supposed to. (Well, except that little one, cause his food just kinda sits on his plate. He's a picky little bug!)

Tnkbell, 4 weeks of vacation is wonderful. :sunny: We are sooo lucky to have it!!! Keep up the good work on your budgeting. :cheer2: The more things you can bring from home the better. Salt and pepper and spices. There are a lot of things you could buy on sale and pack away for your trip. I've been bargain shopping since January, and putting things in a storage container. My DH and I are "saving" our "old" clothes to wear on the trip down and for the first few days we are there...and then throwing them out. No laundry for at least a week. I have budgeted in some clothes shopping, which means we aren't buying very many new clothes this year. Also, our Xmas gifts, birthday gifts, etc. are in some way connected to our Disney adventure. I'm working extra hours at the P.O. whenever they are offered. So all these things add up. I also have myself trained now to think before I buy. Do I really need this (fill in the blank) or could I put this money towards Disney? It makes me think twice about what I am purchasing. I can't believe how much money I "wasted" on things I really could live without.
When it comes to food, everybody is different. What seems like very little to one person could be a lot to someone else. We are all very different when it comes to food consumption. You know your family best and wil do what is right for them. That's all that matters. Are there any other areas you think some of us could help you out with?
I am so excited for you and your family and I can hardly wait to hear about your trip. :bounce: :Pinkbounc

OK time for some revisions to the budget. Since transportation from DTD would be difficult. I'll have to pay the parking fees :guilty: but Dh and I have been thinking through the plans and will go to Tampa while at Orbit One and just stay one night using Priceline or Hotwire. Then the last 4 days spent at HI we can take the shuttle to the parks. So we will have to pay for 6 days parking at the parks 8.00 X 6= 48.00 Now since we will be only staying 1 night in Tampa that will save 80.00 off the original budget and using Priceline or Hotwire hopefully we can spend @ 50.00 saving an additional 30.00. And that my friends can be used towards our food/spending budget! Hey I'm starting to feel rich now!! :rotfl2: Thanks for the advice and I'm still listening :listen: I'm sorry if I get a little sensitive about opinions on my mothering skills, I am only human :)

Thanks DEE!!!!! How about any other discount food stores in the Orlando area? Do they have Aldi? I'm not sure what they have on the East coast. How about an Orange Orchard anywhere, I would love to have fresh Florida oranges everyday! What a treat!! Can anyone recommend a Flea Market, are they worth it? Can you really save as much on souvies as they advertise? We will have plenty of time to explore so any suggestions on free or really inexpensive activities would be great!! I really do appreciate all the input, good and bad because it all is helping me and making me think!!

Sorry - didn't mean to imply that you were a bad mother and my opinions may have sounded harsher than meant to be. Not saying that this pertains to your family, but I grew up with a mother who had a major food issue. Didn't know it at the time, as she was clipping coupons saying that we couldn't afford stuff, now that my parents have tons of money, she still does the same thing, and guess what? Now my sister does too! They use the budget excuse to justify their food issues - not saying this pertains to you, but I am very sensitive about this kind of thing since I spent most of my childhood hungry. My mom and sis expect several grown people and toddlers to share like 1 steak!! It's ridiculous to say the least, and this is why we don't really go out to dinner or on vacation together because it upsets me. Reading people's posts about sharing food, like buns and such also upset me as this is what my mom still expects us to do. It's great that you are taking such a long vacation, but for me, DH and DD, we would definitely knock days off of our vacation before I had to limit how much food was to be eaten while on vacation. Please don't misinterpret this once again to think that I am saying that you are going to starve your kids, but with a food budget this tight, your food choices will have to be limited as a dollar can only stretch so far.

After reading through all of your posts, I just got the feeling that if your kids are hungry, there may not be enough in the food budget to cover a snack or two. For 6 people to eat under $36.00 (adjusted to include your home grocery budget), you will have to eat all meals at your condo. I can't see how you are going to eat even one meal at a park when a hamburger combo (includes fries) is approx. $7.00. Maybe I'm wrong, but it also seems as if you are planning to bring food into the parks which you are not really supposed to do either, so your budget may go up here as well if you have to purchase park food.

It really sounds like you a master budgeter, but, as other posters have stated, food in Orlando is expensive, period. Like I said, food here in Canada is very expensive, and we found the food in Orlando to be more expensive than our food, and that's pretty expensive. And like others have said as well, most coupons don't seem to be applicable for some reason. It seems that you have to stick to this food budget out of financial necessity, which implies that food will be limited, and when experiencing a theme park vacation like yours for 17 days, staying energized and well nourished (and I don't consider counter service food or McDonald's to be good food) is very important.

It really seems to me that your budget is very strict, and as we all know, things happen. My DD just spent 2 days in hospital in Orlando last month while at WDW as she was extremely ill. We didn't have to pay a cent as I am a teacher, but we did have to pay for medication on the spot in U.S. dollars, so when I see people with budgets as tight as yours it worries me as something is probably going to suffer, and in my opinion, food, which is necessary to keep your family going for 17 vacation days, should not be one of them.

I wish you luck in having a successful vacation, whatever that means for you and your family. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and has lots of fun!

My DH and I are "saving" our "old" clothes to wear on the trip down and for the first few days we are there...and then throwing them out. No laundry for at least a week.
:teeth: My sister does this. She has a "Florida bucket" for the old clothes, wears and tosses as she goes. Actually, I do, too, if I happen to have old clothes that I want to get rid of.

Another vote of confidence to suck up the parking fees. (Good save on that one, Lisa) You'll be in the parks fast(er) and when you want to leave, you're on your way.

We've gotten to the point where we don't buy souvies anymore. A bucket of popcorn....save the bucket for DS. If you happen to splurge and buy a drink in a souvenir cup, there's another one for DD. If you were able to set aside $2.00 a week, maybe you could splurge on the ice cream social as the one "special" for your family. It is costly, but it is the one place that you could meet the characters while enjoying a treat, and (take a camera) lots of memories. Click here for information.

OH>>>>MY FAVOURITE!!!
On the rides, you'll have your picture taken. We never buy the pics, but we get the "tags" with our picture # on it. Some of them were really cute-a "doorknob"' do not disturb hanger for Tower of terror. Great for scrapbooking later.

Yes, we are all sensitive when attacked...er questioned....about our skills, aren't we? Silly, because only we know our families and our circumstances. But it still hurts! (I teach, so I get criticism on the home and work fronts) We're doing our best. And I love learning all about other people's budgets! I will have THREE in university next year, and 2 others in a (not cheap!) choir. Those are our choices for our family. So I am always looking for ideas. Since DH does the cooking, it needs to be easy, straight forward, and few instructions. :rotfl:

Keep the planning going. I think that you are going to have a wonderful trip, filled with wonderful family memories! And NO debt when you are done! WTG!

This thread is so great...so many creative idea's, just goes to show you it can be done for a lot less than many people realize. :flower:

Several years ago (7) of my family members went for 10 days on a budget of $4000, ($1200 alone was for plane tickets and a minivan) there were no sit down meals in the parks...counter only...breakfast of fruit, bagels, cereal in the room...snacks of celery, sliced apples with peanut butter, carrots and granola bars for the parks and 2 off site sit down meals with a one day trip to universal as well...so I know it can be done for less...and the kids had the best time.

I highly doubt that WDW is going to bother you if you bring snacks for your children (and meals for your toddlers) into the parks...we found that the celery, carrots and sliced apples held up pretty good ::yes:: . We did bring peanut butter and jelly one day for the 2 little ones that were under 2 years but they didn't hold up as well. :sad1:

As others have pointed out, your meal budget may be a little tight..but if you buy your groceries way before you get to orlando I think you could find much better prices...and since you are driving there and have a van, many of the things you will need you can buy at your local grocery store that has good prices and just buy the perishables at a store the closer you get to orlando.

I am not sure how long it will take you to drive there but if this was my trip I might consider just driving all the way through...taking turns driving with a few good rest stops inbetween and saving that money on the hotels to use for your vacation.

No matter what you have the desire and determination to make this one heck of a trip and I am sure you will all have a wonderful time. :cheer2:
