From the Hollywood Reporter:

Disney Channel's highly anticipated "High School Musical 2" made history Friday night when 17.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the premiere of the sequel to the hit 2006 film, making the debut the most-watched basic cable telecast of all time.

Additionally, Disney Channel's original movie ranked as the most-watched TV telecast ever in kids 6-11 and the most-watched entertainment telecast ever in tweens 9-14.

"HSM 2" also dwarfed the broadcast competition to become the most-watched Friday telecast in more than five years.

"HSM 2" lifted the special 15-minute preview of upcoming Disney Channel original series "Phineas and Ferb" as well as hit series "Hannah Montana," which drew the largest numbers for a series telecast on basic cable ever in total viewers, kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14.

We hosted a HSM2 sleepover for my DD7's friends. 7 little girls all very excited! I know of at least 6 other parties Friday night. The girls having parties ranged in age from 7 - 14. From what I hear at soccer and back to school afternoon everyone had a wonderful time! I personally enjoyed both movies. It is so nice to have something to watch that is not violent or full of sexual innuendo. Just a fun movie and lots of music!

We went to a party at a friend's house. 11 kids...boys and girls.

I set up a projector that I borrowed from work in my friend's garage along with a sound system. The kids had a blast while the parents grilled and had a nice quiet steak dinner.

thought it was great and one of the few times a sequel is as good as the original...

Although I won't be snide, I'll bite:
I thought the story line was good. The choreography was terrific. I hated how over-produced the songs were, though. Did every song have to sound like a studio pop song? The music and lyrics were appropriate for a movie musical, but they sure didn't have a theatrical sound.

And the Troy dancing in the desert song was the pits. Loved, loved, loved the Esther Williams throwback in Sharpay's song.

Disney* inc will market the ever-loving crap out of this, but what it does to promote theater in middle and even high school is terrific.
