According to our local paper, two hours for domestic over the 12 holiday days, is recommended (we're usually one..if we had done one, we would have really been scurrying).
The morning flight rush can be surprisingly crowded -- prior to the new queue area to the right of security opening, the line would go down the bridge to the garage, then back, then they'd block off the escalator, making people form a line downstairs and the line would snake around the back of the escalator/stairs for the 6am-7am flights. I only had to learn that lesson one time, and it was the hard way.
Usually the lines move pretty efficiently, but I went ahead and got a Clear card to save myself the hassle. This is the first year in about 10 that I'm not planning to fly anywhere over the holidays, though. (The only bummer about using Clear USED to be that if I flew SWA, I still had to get there earlier than I'd like in order to get a spot in line. Not anymore, though!)
I don't kow the details of the 'puffs' but that's what it does
