Man! It was hot yesterday! High 90's and humid. I walked during my lunch hour but it was steamy hot like Disney in August. The area where I walk is an open office park with ponds and walking trail. I try and imagine I'm at WDW. Reminded me of comedian John Pinette who does a hilarious routine about Disney in August. Have you ever done the EPCOT Death March? :rotfl:
You can search it at YouTube but warning there's a couple fBombs.
We ended up booking August because we cancelled a CR Feb booking and bought into DVC. We had two kids in high school(one graduated) so summer vacation was the only free time. We're deep into baseball season and hope playoffs end before we fly out in a couple weeks. Our Southwest airline tickets expire mid-August so we're cutting that close.

We've been to WDW in August before and here's some tips(hope you have more)

- Drink plenty of water - We bring water bottles and fill with ice before leaving resort. Keep water bottles outside of bag with camera/video or the lens fog up. Ice melts fast so we fill up for free at any counter service.
- Slow down - Easier said than done. DW is totally a commando park hopper. Fair warning to you all if they ever hold a race. It's been a while since my last trip but we're going for 8 days and should be able to see a lot with 2 days in each park.
- Rope drop in AM - rest - Evening park - With BLT close to parks, hope this strategy works even easier. Might be hard to maintain as the week progresses but I hate laying in bed half the morning. Our kids are all teenagers so I hope DW isn't disappointed if we have to ditch them in the AM.
- Seek shade, air conditioning and water - I feel so much better when I pour cool water over my head. Kali River Rapids will be fun. When my daughter was young and we rode this for first time, she was so upset when she got soaked on this ride. We had to buy her a whole new wardrobe in gift shop. Shouldn't be an issue in August. :)
- Water Park - Our water park will most likely be pools. DW is not high on "wasting a day at water park". Her words not mine. I personally love them but a day out of a park is wasted in her opinion. Hopefully this will temper down as we become more experienced DVCers. Is there a list of approved pool hopping choices?
- Don't forget the Vasoline - Or something to prevent chaffing. 'nuff said. :scared1:
- Watch out for dehydration - We had a nephew who had a scary dehydration episode at WDW. Just need to know when to slow down, cool off and drink lots of fluids.
- Watch for lightning storms - We had a couple of the most scary storm events of my life at WDW. One was a hurricane(whole story for that) and the other was during a long lightning storm at EPCOT. We held up in Canadian gift shop for a long time but the storm was not quitting. We decided to make a run for our car out in the lot. You know how long a walk/run that is. The parking lot was a couple inches in water under our feet and the lightning was close. In the NorthEast where we live, you rarely see lightning from sky to ground due to the rolling hills and trees. In flat places like FL, it's scary especially when your running in water. :scared1:

Any other strategies to beat the heat?

29 days to go!! Also in August here. I haven't been to WDW in the summer in like 5 years but I agree with the water and shade. This is my 3rd year as a DVCer and yes I'm calming down about hitting the parks everyday - now it is more about being immersed in the Disney feel. This is the first year we're going to a water park.

Maybe if you inform her that Disney waterpark is like Disney - not to be found anywhere else. From what I hear it's not like going to a 6 flags water park just like going to MK is not like going to 6 Flags. Maybe that will help convince her:banana::banana:

we go every August! BLT is a perfect location!! A short 10 minute walk and you are entering the MK!! You tips are right on. You don't have to lay in bed in the early am, you can go to the pool for some early laps. Or you and DW can enjoy the early AM MK time, and have the kids meet you there (probably as you are getting ready to head back lol). I will say that the weather circumstances do make you tour differently but it also makes you slow down and and notice/enjoy things you normally rush thru. Let us know how it works out!:) PS dear husband is also a commando tourer, but has learned to slow down and relax a bit since becoming DVC back in 1993!! Of course having a fridge full of Michelob available doesn't hurt either.:rotfl2:

Can you really get free water at walk-ups? My family is always encouraging me to fill up at the water fountain but I'm not fond of water fountains in public places...

I believe ice not water. But I could be wrong.

Yes, Ice is free and encouraged I believe due to heat concerns.

Good stuff. It's been a while since our last trip but hope to take it easy. Cold beer from BLT balcony sounds yummy. :yay:

We will be there on August 21st, our 2nd DVC stay, this time at AKL. Then onto a 3 night DReam cruise.

It is so hot in NJ, I wondeir if it will be cooler in August than it is this week.
I know that it is the mid 80's in Orlando this week....

Keep Cool!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I am a big fan of pool-hopping If you're staying on points, then you may hop anywhere except Beach Club and Animal Kingdom Lodge. I especially like the Poly pool. It's nice, the bar is good, and the view of fireworks can't be beat. From BLT, it's just two monorail stops away-- even better!

What date is your Dream cruise? We'll be at AKL on 8/20-8/25 then the Dream. Maybe we'll see you there!!!

Sounds perfect. We arrive in 19 days for 5 nights--two will be at BWV and then we will be at BLT for the last 3!!!

And, I also have a few teens with me so I am prepared for the "do we really need to get up again?". Happened two years ago so I left them at VWL, took the boat to MK all by myself and had a wonderful time!!! Got back about 10:00 am having done all of my favorites!!!!!

We also hit the parks first things, do what we can, get our lunch between 11:30 and 12:30--this year doing our TS meal for lunch--back to the resort for swimming and rest and then hit the parks around 6:00 pm or so for quick service dinner (for those who want it) and more rides.

Have fun!!!
