So you just pick an ethnicity and assign it to a tradition that has nothing to do with that culture. Unless you know for sure that it is practiced in that culture and has some sort of meaning in that culture, don't use it.

For real? Not something to ***** about.

Yes people, it is offensive to call it a Chinese gift exchange. Really, what are people thinking these days?

I find white elephant offensive for elephants who may be white. Some people really need a life.

I didn't read it as an insult and I'm sure it was not meant to offend. They're fun and meant to be a party game. How could people getting a gift be a bad thing? I don't understand how you are offended.

um..hello....we are talking about big melting pot, USA, right? The same country that created fortune cookies and chicken balls and call it Chinese food?

I am more offended about that than a Chinese auction! :rotfl2:

I am Chinese and I'd never even seen a fortune cookie (other than on TV) until I moved to North America. I was quite shocked that they did give it out in restaurants for real. And the first time I walked into a Chinese buffet I didn't recognize any of the food and was so "offended", I ate the pizza!!

As for French Fries, there's nothing "French" about them either. Of course, the name was changed to Freedom Fries...

If that's what some folks decided to call it and the name sticks, really, who cares? :confused3 It's really interesting all the things ppl get offended over on behalf of other cultures that most folks from that culture couldn't care less about. A little of an overdose of political correctness.

I found it offensive as well. However when I read the post that explained it as the recipient ending up with the "right" gift as having to do with destiny it softened in offensiveness a little bit. I don't know the origin, I'd never heard it before, and I don't know if the "destiny" explanation is accurate or not. But I did remember that even though I may be offended at first, without an explanation, I really shouldn't jump to conclusions about what I first think.

Well why not call it it what it is......a gift exchange.....no need to reference white elephants or the Chinese.......

Really, personal attacks? Now I need to get a life?

I think it is in everyone's best interest to NOT add race or ethnicity to any kind of thing that didn't come from that race or ethnicity. I can think of a few I won't even bring up because they have the N word in them.

I have a perfectly great life, I don't need a new one.

You are one Chinese person giving your own personal opinion.

You have no idea what race or ethnicity I am so please don't assume.

I always think it best to error on the side of being non-offensive when it comes to racial issues.
