14 Day Repositioning Cruise

The rumor mill says this may be a very affordable Panama Canal cruise. However, what type of entertainment might be on the ship for two weeks. Do they repeat the shows (Dreams, Golden Mickey's, etc) the second week? Do you think they will have new shows?

I am very interested in the 14 day repositining cruise. But, I must doubt any addition of new shows. We would have heard about it by now. And, that is way too much work to get a new show. I'm guessing they may just spread out the existing shows -- or show them twice.

I have been hearing about the BIG difference in water as you get on the Pacific side. Do you think this woud be a problem? And, I wonder if I would actually want to be on the ship for 14 days -- seems like a very long time.

So, what would that mean for programming? Will they not run a full schedule? Only book enough for 1 dining room?

What does it mean when they say they won't take a full ship?

Nobody really knows, because DCL has never done a 14-night cruise. (And, even now, the 14-night cruise is just a rumor.) I would imagine that passengers would get the same 6 shows and 1 movie night they get now, plus additional variety shows and movies. It would just mean having more than the usual number of specialty performers. I don't see them repeating Disney Dreams, Golden Mickeys, or Hercules -- but Who Wants to Be a Mouseketeer could be repeated a second time because no two shows are the same. They could also hire an outside entertainment vendor to provide a few shows.

In any case, I would not expect any big new Disney shows along the lines of Disney Dreams to be created for just two sailings in 2005.

At first glance the "not a full ship" rumor does not make sense. But there may be legitimate reasons to limit the number of passengers due to limitations in the amount of food and waste that the ship can carry. (DCL normally loads all food at the beginning of each cruise.)

Good point Horace. I understand, by law they must carry an extra 9 days worth of food per cruise. That would be 23 days of food. For a full compliment that would take a lot of space. Less passengers, less space needed for food.

Also, what ports do you think the Magic would call on for a 14 day cruise?

what are the chances that there won't be stops (or very very few, like Castaway Cay) so they can shorten the amount of time (i.e. to 10 days) ... thus allowing them to have more passengers (more money)???

It would depend on when the Magic is needed in Long Beach or San Pedro. If the Magic will have Saturday departures, then the repositioning cruise would be 14 nights. If the Magic will have Sunday departures, then the repositioning cruise would be 15 nights.

The distance that the Magic must travel would make a 7-night or 8-night itinerary impossible, even with no ports of call.

In less than 10 days the rumors stop IF and only IF the Magic is going to Disneyland for DL's 50th anniversary. the rumors will continue if she doesn't.

True.

But if DCL (including Captain Tom) is now saying that the announcement will be made on May 5, then what are we to expect? Does anyone really expect a big announcment in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland that, during summer 2005, the Disney Magic will sail to Belize City and Costa Maya?

I have cruised on a ' repositioning cruise' on Princess, from Fort Lauderdale to LA through the Panama Cannal.

I had also had a carribean trip on the same ship the year before.

Firslty princess padded out their usual entertainment schdule with various entertainers and 'highlights' shows with bits of all of the previous shows.

Addtionally there was some customer 'talent' shows such as kids ( they already do this but could upgrade), and an adults one.

Through panama c, they had a guide on the bridge telling us about highlights and how the cannal was constructed and how the water supply is gained, it was very interesting, but is long we were outside the entrance at 7.30am and finnished at 6pm that night.

On Food etc, it took on extra supples at various ports, we actually saw this occur. Additionally it had an unannouced stop at the port near panama city, to fuel up, for 6 hours, someone said the price was good.

Surley supplies and 'waste' can be taken on and off at any 'cruise' quality port. However It is a big problem at a 'tender' port.

Security might be another issue however nowadays, if they take on supplies.

I was asuuming that when the statement was made about less passengers that the remaining would be filled with executives, corporate sponsers, and other important Disney people. It was originally a rumor that the repositioning wouldnt be offered to passengers at all.

When we took the galley tour on the Disney Magic a couple of years ago, a guide explained that the Disney Magic loads all food for the entire week at Port Canaveral. This surprised me, because I had assumed that they would reload fresh perishables -- such as milk, fruit, and lettuce -- during the cruise.

It seems that DCL has food handling and storage down to a science. I guess if you know what you're doing, a strawberry can still look perfect after a week.

The more I think about, it's hard to imagine that DCL would turn away passengers just to avoid reloading food supplies on a 2-week cruise. Even if they needed to fly the food from Florida to Acapulco, it would be good business to sell as many staterooms as possible.

I've been a cruise addict for a little more than 5 years, and I've never heard of a ship "dead-heading" during a scheduled re-positioning. The ships are very expensive and it costs the line money to have them sailing empty.

While I'm still taking a wait-and-see attitude about a ship coming to the west coast, I'd be extremely surprised if they sent the ship there empty of paying passengers.
