13th WDW Park?

DAK was built too soon and rushed that's why the park hardly gas any rides and we are stuck with Chester & Hester.

Enough there is no need for another park Plus and expand the 4 parks and 2 existing water parks.

DHS wasn't much different, but back then it was meant to be more of an operating studio and less a ride park.

Exactly DHS is a different story it wasn't supposed to be a full park but DHS was and the following were left out because the park was rushed.

1. Beastly Kingdom (DAK rushed we get Camp M&M Instead)
2. Extension of Dinosaur: ride was supposed to have another 2 minutes including an odor section.
3. The Excavator: A huge E-ticket Wooden roller coaster for Dinoland instead we got the Play Ground and Chester and Hester.

DAK would have been amazing if they waited 5 more years and built what was planned.

Well it's no coincidence that MGM opened 1 year before Universal and AK opened one year before IOA

Well it's no coincidence that MGM opened 1 year before Universal and AK opened one year before IOA

this is the real stupidity of it....what kinda "threat" did either of those pose?

i can see the unknown being a driving force behind the hurried MGM park...but i can't figure out why evil mikey did the same screw up again with animal kingdom.

but here are my unconfirmed, somewhat educated, firsthand guesses:

The main reason for the construction of animal kingdom was simply to put a new "resort" area and allow for hotel room construction that could pass as near a gate. And as we know that has succeeded...as there are about 9000 rooms and 500 villas now sitting there...even though none have what can be considered easy access to the parks by their own standards established in the 70's and 80's. Mission Accomplished

Zoos are distasteful to a large segment of the general population...they thought if they did a "half-zoo" then they could avoid that vibe. Failure. Anyone remember "Nahtazu"? The problem is that the park was handcuffed on the drawing boards because it couldn't be "too animally". They set the bar too low and still managed to slither under it.

I really think this was the end of disney park building and the imagineering standard operation procedures as we knew them. I don't think its a coincidence that the next three parks disney built were absolutely horrible...and still are today. Quality sure didn't win out, Walter.
I can see alot of blood being spilled on the floor (not literally) of WDI and Team Disney in Anaheim when DAK was moving into construction. Budget was too big an issue...and while they all might have had the right focus and intentions...in the end the cutting and slashing really killed the park. the park was downright awful when it opened....really sad. and then asia made it a little better...and then they went with a really cheapo fasttracked expansion and then a really expensive poorly engineered kiddie coaster.

And here we are.

The morale of the story...you gotta fix your screwups before you get a new house...as they learned at california adventure, paris, hong kong...and eventually DAK when it slides into the background even more than it already has.

Actually DAK was built in responce to Bush Gardens Tampa not to compete with IOA.

It was still rushed ant the park suffers to this day because of it.

BGT was opened long before AK...and long before "The Florida Project" was started. It was slowly built up, however over the years.

Correct maybe in response to was a bad way to phrase it. Eisner directly said when the park was open that DAK was the right way to do an animal based park, taking a shot at Sea World and BGT. While Disney will never come out and say it former Imagineer Eddie Sotto said that it was to compete with the Zoo/animal attractions in Florida.

I think it would be fairly likely that although a 4th gate was built in response to IOA, the theme was to complete in other areas, since Disney didn't need to complete with the IOA theme itself.

Since Busch Gardens opened in 1959 and Sea World in 1973...i still don't see Disney's "frantic opening" of animal kingdom being somewhat of a necessity. So it's tough to justify cutting corners because of AB parks.

But i'm sure they had "guest satisfaction surveys" that clearly indicated that 95% of all visitors demanded animals in WDW and where not willing to wait one minute past April of 1998 :lmao:

But seriously...that debaucle was all about cutting the budget and throwing open the gates to sell tickets...nothing more

The other thing that still gets me is that it seems like disney had sticker shock from the animal habitats and upkeep...like the word on the street about zoos being a ridiculous expense never managed to get out. It seems like they are reluctant to do anything with animals because of the cost associated. Who knew elephants ate so much? Other than every third grader in the free world.

heck...a dog costs a ton these days.

In the end, not as much as Disney expected, but before it opened, there was a lot of thinking that Universal was going to steal some days from a Disney vacation.

Not counting DisneySea then? It opened in 2001, yes, TWDC didn't pay for it, but Imagineering still worked on it.

Then ironically Disney ignored the potential threat from Universal, in the form a few kid wizards and had their butts handed to them.

Another ironic issue is the fact that MGM was actually pretty good. Quietly carving out a nice little niche with the actual studio AND the plethora of quality live shows (Hunchback, Doug, B&TB, LMermaid, Fantasmic) but they canned two and lessened the other three in favor of mostly crap.

Difference here though is Harry Potter is a fad. It won't stand the test of time that Disney characters have and will continue to do. Universal will be forced to retheme that area long before Disney is forced to retheme anything it has going on. (I don't count refurbs or Expansions as rethemeing.)

This is crazy HP ingrained in our culture and will be around in 50 years. They are teaching HP in Universities.

You are so wrong.

It's a fad that has been around for how long already? It's going to fade despite good reports that the books will continue with a Dumbledore series? With a world wide love affair with these characters? If it falters it will be because Universal allows it too.

BTW, how relevant do you think Peter Pan, Snow White, Song of the South and such are to kids whose families don't indoctrinate them?

Disney isn't infallible, as MGM proves, IMO.

Agreed HP has passed stuff like Star Wars IMO and will be revered the way LOTR is today if not more.

Funny, I don't see the Little Mermaid being as culturally ingrained as HP, yet ANOTHER attraction is being built around it...20 years after the movie came out.

wrong...i've heard this a thousand times...and its been a thousand times wrong.

harry potter will continue to be a value only while there is new material or the prospect of new material...and may phase out even with that.

but this argument is time sensitive...so it can only be a draw until the time lapses
