I'm starting to plan our April trip and am browsing the menus. I would like to do the Norway princess lunch but my 12 yo will not like the adult offerings. Is there a way he can get the kids menu? Some restaurants will have adult offerings he will eat but not all.

I'm sure the restaurant will be able to help you out, but they of course will charge you for an adult priced menu item. Most servers are very helpful about things like this. You and your son should be just fine. :)

We had like a 50/50 kind of hit or miss with this.

The only place my 12 year old had to pay adult prices for kids meal (which really is ridiculous imho) was at San Angel Inn. They brought her out 8 chicken tenders. She ate one.

She ordered mostly off kids menus- exceptions being Tutto, Le Cellier and Kona.

At the norway place I am guessing you'll have to pay adult prices.

.

At Le Cellier, did she not order off the kids menu by choice, or would they not allow it? I have the same issue with a picky eater.

We went to Norway and my older daughter didn't like the food choices so she ordered off the children's menu. They not only charged her for an adult menu but the food serving of her meal was so tiny it was crazy. One of the reasons we will not go back there for any meal except for breakfast.

She ordered off the adult menu by CHOICE. They asked which menu she wanted - she's a steak eater so she was all over this one.

What is the age limit on the kid's meal? Isn't it 12?

If it is 12, can't you just say she is 11? (start flaming, please)
Or don't say anything at all and just ask for the kids menu.

I guess if it's 9, then you have no choice.
I would assume if you order off the kid's meal you get the kid's portion? Why would they charge the adult price if it's the same size?? Or do they give you a bigger portion of the kid's meal?

My DD13 has ALWAYS ordered off the kid's menu. If it is a restaurant where you order off of a menu, it is my understanding that anyone can order off the kid's menu and pay kid's menu prices. However, if you go to a restaurant that offers a buffet or serves the food "family style," they will automatically get charged as an adult. I have heard of 'Ohana letting kids order off a kid's menu, but not sure about older "kids."

My DS is 12 and we've never had any issue with ordering him a kids meal at any restaurant except the Sci Fi where we had a crabby waitress. We just order what we want and the servers never bat an eye. He is a very picky eater and would not eat most of what is on an adult menu. Sometimes they will ask if you want an adult sized portion and charge you for that (rarely) but most of the time we just get the kids meal size because we usually get dessert and that is plenty.

This has been my experience as well. My children (older than 9) have ordered off the kids menu at a la carte restaurants many times and we have never been charged anything other than the kid's menu price.

My dd (12) always orders off the kids menu. Of course she pays the adult prices at buffets. My dd (11) is 50/50 - half the time off the adult menu, half the time off the kids menu. We've never had to pay adult prices when they had a kids meal except at buffets and restaurants like Ohana.

This is the reason why we aren't doing the DDP for the first time. I refuse to pay almost $50 a day for two plates of chicken nuggets! Instead we're using the TIW card. DDP was a great value when the kids were all Disney "kids", now that they are Disney "adults" not so much!

Maybe you could get him something he likes before hand, a hamburger at USA or a hotdog at Germany for example and then he could just order dessert at Norway.

They probably aren't going to let you bring food from another location into the restaurant.

Correct, I would have him eat beforehand or in other words feed him first at another location, that's if I were the OP. Mine would have to eat what was available at Norway.

The meals at Norway are considered a buffett. Which is why you are charged for an adult if your child is 10yr old or more, no matter what they eat. You cannot just order apps or a dessert. There is a buffett section, and a fixed price menu that you choose your entrees from.

At non-buffett places we have never run into any problems with an older child ordering from the kiddie menu.

I'm just curious as to how they charged you since there isn't an adult chicken tender meal on the menu? Did they tell you before they brought the bill?

I'm having a hard time finding places for my family to eat. I like trying new places and everyone else is fine eating hamburgers every lunch. I"m trying to find restaurants where there might be a balance, and I was hoping that it could be done by letting my older two order of the kid's menu if desired. I have found that as they have gotten older that eating at WDW has become more of a challenge! I would hope our family could find some sit down restaurants where we could all be happy:)

San ANgel Inn is the only place that wouldn't let my DD, then 11, order off a kid's menu. They told me that the minute we sat down and asked if there was a child's menu available. I thought we were polite in asking, but they were rather curt in their response. I said thank you and that we would have to leave and eat elsewhere that day. I have a niece who is almost 13 who orders from the kids menus routinely at WDW... never a problem, except at San Angel Inn. At buffets, of course, you pay by age regardless of which items you choose.

I'm surprised people are being given such trouble to have their kids eat off the children's menu. I'm 28 years old but can only eat small portions so I constantly ordered from the kids menu on my last 2 trips and was never given any problems.

My question to Disney would be, is it really hurting you if someone would rather eat chicken nuggets than the adult menu? Happy tummies = magical vacation

Good luck to everyone going and I hope you don't encounter any problems!

Akershus will definitely charge for them as an adult but they'll let anyone have the kids food. The servings are very small because they also have the appetizer buffet. Mostly places will let "adults" order off the kids menu but not always. It's inconsistent how they will charge you as well some charge the kids price and soem will charge an adult price. We tend to have our kids share 1 adult meal rather than trying to order kids meals now at 10 and 12. The quantity of the food is better for them and the restaurants are very flexible about modifying entrees to leave sauces off. Getting a basically plain pasta dish was also a good option because almost every menu has a pasta dish.
