My DS had shingles when he was eight. He did have the chicken pox when he was only 5 moths old. The DR gave him medicine to keep the pox at a minimum, to "supress" them if you will. I am not sure if that is why he ended up with the shingles and when I asked my DR, she said there are not enough cases to study if the medicines would put them at risk later on for shingles. Since the vaccine is relatively new this may be the case as well.
I wish I could be of more help. I know I was frantic when DS came down with the shingles. Where does she have the shingles? My DS had them on his face and when I took him to a pediatric eye specialist he said my son must have a high tolerence for pain as this is usually very painful.

My sister-in-law had them & her 2 year old daughter developed them about 2 weeks later. My niece had a very mild case & we just had to control the itching. My S-I-L's case was much worse.

DS complained of headaches for a few days prior to the breakout. They did not itch and were not sore to the touch but the headache is what bothered him the most. Did your Dr. give it a name? I can never remember anything more than facial quadrant...............

My youngest daughter has had two bouts. The first one, she was a little bit older than your daughter and it was agony for her. She just screamed in pain for hours and hours. I thought I was going to go nuts, because there was nothing I could do for her. :guilty:

It started as a quarter-sized sore on her collarbone and moved in a ring around her shoulder. They tend to follow a nerve path from what I was told.

She was prescribed Zovrax, and once she was treated, they healed pretty quickly. She does have scarring from it though.

The second bout, I caught it in time, and they never got nearly as bad. She was in no pain that time.

She did cause a major Chicken Pox outbreak at her school.

I read this after I posted.

This apparently isn't always true, because it was very bad for my daughter the first time.

I'm glad your little girl is okay! :grouphug:

My niece's was on one side of her back & a small spot on her face (on the same side of the body.) It seems like the itching lasted quite a while (a couple of weeks for her.) I understood that as soon as they patches dried up, she was no longer contagious. That took about 5 days for her, much longer for my sister-in-law.

Oh, I feel so bad for your daughter! My 15 dd (yes FIFTEEN) has a horrible case of chicken pox right now. Somehow we missed the vaccine, and now she is covered in blisters. She said that a boy at school came in with the scabs about two weeks ago, so boom, now she has it. :guilty:

He said they are on the trigeminal nerve and I know that is the main one to the face. She was just very touchy yesterday, she's been fine otherwise.

How long did they last? How much school and dance will she have to miss? That is what is most upsetting to her. :sad1: :scratchin
If I remember correctly, DS's lasted over a week perhaps closer to two weeks. It was during the summer so he did not miss any school. He was not prescribed any meds, just left to take its course. He does have scars from it. I just asked DS what he remembers from having them and all he recalls is the headache and that they did itch.

They did not give my niece Zovrax, but they did for s-i-l. We were quite upset that they wouldn't give it to her. But she did recover quite quickly, especially compared to her Mom.

So, how many of these kids had the immunization? I was sure under the impression that one of the big pushes for having them immunized was that they wouldn't get shingles.

Has anyone ever heard of this in children? She had the chickenpox vaccine when she was a baby. Yesterday she threw up twice and this morning I noticed this rash on her temple and chin. I looked closer and saw it in her hair so I called the doc.

I've been doing some internet research but I'm confused b/c everything I find says that it usually shows up in children who have had the chickenpox.

Please if you know anything about this, let me know.

btw--She feels fine, it doesn't hurt or itch. She's just very upset about having to miss dance and school this week.

Yes, unfortunately I had them when I was a child. I think I was in third grade. I only remember having to leave school, thankfully I don't remember the pain and itching(as described to me by my Mother). Hope she is feeling better soon and back to dancing up a storm. :cool1:

My daughter is almost 17 now, so her incident happened before the vaccine became available.

When she was only six weeks old, my DD21 had Chicken Pox. I did the dreaded 21-day count and my newborn never got them. She did get one little blister on her shoulder, but even her pediatrician couldn't tell if it was Chicken Pox or not.

Apparently it wasn't!

2 weeks almost to the day she started to get sick, I had a loss of appetite and extreme fatigue and a little cold. The next day I noticed to red spots on my chest. I watched them all week and after some internet investigating I'm pretty sure they are the chickenpox. I called the doc and after hearing my symptoms and my description she agreed. I only have 5 little pox, they don't itch. I'm VERY tired this week though.

I never had the chickenpox as a kid and had the shot after my oldest ds got his shot. I guess I can say officially I had them now.

Be VERY thankful you had the vaccine, Pembo. I had them in HS and it was so terrible. Much worse when you are older, as a general rule.

Oh, noooooo! I've heard they are a PITB when you get them as an adult!

Hopefully that shot will help some. I hope you get to feeling better soon! :grouphug:
