1200 pics, 1100 miles, 15 deluxe dining meals, 1 great time at POR *Completed 9/5*

Great update, Alan. I can't believe you'd never taken a Friendship Boat before. That is too funny what your daughter said (although if my husband were to get his wish and that will be his job at Disney he might not find it so funny :lmao::lmao::lmao:).

I love the throwback pictures. I can't believe how your kids have grown and it appears you have every right to be proud of them.

Anxious for your Flying Fish review. I'm on the verge of cancelling it for the second time for our September trip.

This is a great trip report! It has me looking into new resturaunts for me next trip!:thumbsup2

We checked in at Flying Fish around 7:30pm for our 8:00pm reservation on Monday, June 2. We were given a pager and headed next door to Seashore Sweets to browse a bit. It was a very short browse. Within just a few minutes the buzzer lit up and we were seated.

Flying Fish is such a cool place! I love the retro decor that harkens back to the glory days of classic boardwalks along the U.S. East coast. I love the steeplechase scenes.

This would be the second of our three signature dinner experiences on this trip. We had only eaten here once before but loved it then and it was a must-do on this trip.

Our server was Didi and he was an absolute PRO. When dining at signature restaurants you expect excellent service...and that's exactly what we got from this gentleman. In fact, I think he was the best server we had this entire trip. He brought us our menus, explained the specials and even made some recommendations.

In no time, Didi brought out bread and our drinks:

DD really didn't see anything on the appetizer menu that appealed to her. Her tastes are really simple and everything was just too "fancy" for her liking. I told Didi that this was the first time we had been on Deluxe Dining since she has been considered an adult and I asked him if there was perhaps something really simple that might appeal to her. Didi came through with Flying (Fish) colors! (See what I did there?) ;) He spoke to the chef and he created a beautiful fresh fruit plate just for her. Now THIS is great customer service and it was greatly appreciated.

DS and I had the Jonah Lump Crab Cake:

Our expectations were high because on our last visit to Flying Fish the crab cakes were the best we had ever had. Well...they still are! Oh...my...goodness! They are absolutely wonderful!

DW got the Signature Appetizer Duo with Crab Cake and Caesar Salad:

Perfect! I started to order this but I can have a Caesar salad anytime. It was all about the crab cake for me!

For their entrees, DS and DD both ordered the Oak-Grilled Maine Sea Scallops:

They both enjoyed the scallops but didn't touch "the green stuff." DS ate all of his scallops, but DW and I helped DD with a few of hers. They were cooked to perfection.

DW and I both ordered the Signature Flying Fish Cafe Entree Duo: Char-crusted NY strip and Potato Wrapped Red Snapper:

Oh my!!!

It wasn't just good...

It was knock your socks off great!

I am literally getting hungry as I am posting this!

I had the potato wrapped snapper the last time I was here and I knew I was ordering it again. I almost ordered just the snapper, but the steak sounded good also. The steak was very good indeed, but alas, I would've loved a HUGE plate of the snapper also. I was still VERY happy with what I ordered. Both the steak and the snapper were outstanding.

I was absolutely stuffed after the meal so I decided to skip dessert entirely. I got up to walk around a bit while the others ordered their desserts. (More on that in the next chapter.)

DS ordered the White Chocolate and Raspberry Creme Brulee:

He loved it!

DW ordered the Spring Crop Peach and Pecan Tart:

Had I not been so full, this is what I would've ordered also. DW said it was absolutely amazing! She took this photo and posted on her instagram:

DD got the Trio of Concession Sweets: On the Boardwalk:

Now THIS she loved! It was fun and playful!

Here's one happy girl!

So it is safe to say that we absolutely LOVED Flying Fish Cafe! Our expectations were high and we were not disappointed. The service and the food were absolutely first class and Flying Fish Cafe will remain on our must-do list.

Grade = A+

Coming up next: we take the Friendship Boat back to Hollywood Studios for an Extra Magic Hours evening!

You old fuddy duddy you making those poor kids take the boat for the old folks. :rotfl2: I guess that I'm a old soul too because I like taking the boat rides. Of course, I enjoy most things Disney.

The staged recreation picture is cute! It's nice to see how the kids have grown over the years.

Oh, my.... That meal looked just wonderful, from start to finish. Such wonderful service, too! I love the app your DD ended up with. Actually sounds pretty good right about now.

Oops, looks like we were posting at the same time. How nice was it that your server was able to get the chef to make a special appetizer for your daughter. Great service indeed.

Umm, umm, umm, umm, umm! Every single thing that you ordered looks absolutely delicious!

Well now I am totally torn. The last review I read of Flying Fish was awful so I cancelled it (plus with no job for Mark at the moment I was trying to keep the meal costs down). They had the same as you; said the fish was awesome and the steak was HORRIBLE. But then I booked it again and thought of cancelling it again until I read your review. UGH....I don't know what to do.

I am delighted that all four of you thoroughly enjoyed your meal. And how sweet of your server to arrange a special appetizer for DD. I love when they go out of their way like that...shows they appreciate the customer.

Wow! Great service and a wonderful meal. Can't ask for more than that! My husband loves seafood, so we may have to look into Flying Fish next trip.

Congrats on the top ten thread status! Good for you!

I don't care for fish, but my DH does. And I think the steak there is one of the best on property. Yay for your wonderful meal!

Never been on the boat....then it's about time! :) I love the boat for relaxing and the view.

Very cool pics of your kids!

I am glad you enjoyed your dinner but, the steak looked like a charred mess to me. Guess looks were deceiving!

I know! We actually really enjoyed the nice cool ride on a hot afternoon...and the views were unique to us. It was quite nice! And DD is 14, so she thinks anyone over 30 is old! :rolleyes1

The throwback pics are both happy and sad. I miss the children they once were, but I'm thrilled with the young adults they've become.

This is a great trip report! It has me looking into new resturaunts for me next trip!:thumbsup2

Thank you BigBlueWho! I'm glad you're enjoying the report. More restaurant reviews and pictures to come!

Hahahahaha I know right! It's not MY fault that apparently ALL of the CMs on the Friendship Boats are retirees! :rotfl2: And I did love taking the boats! Disney World has SO much to see it's nice to see things from a different perspective.

Oh yeah I just knew DW wasn't leaving the Boardwalk without that picture! We had not even discussed it, but I knew what she was thinking. That's what 19 years of being married to someone will do!

It WAS! Absolutely great meal. And I thought that fruit plate they brought out for DD looked delish! Those blackberries and raspberries were fresh and in season.

Yes, I thought that was really special. When I mentioned it to Didi all I was really hoping was that they could bring her an app from the kids menu or something. Instead they made her (and us) feel really special by bringing her something special. The level of service was befitting of a signature restaurant for sure.

That was a great meal for sure! As I was posting this chapter yesterday it was making my mouth water! And now I wish I could go back in time and order one of those desserts.

All I can tell you about Flying Fish is that, in my opinion, if you like fish you can't go wrong with that potato wrapped snapper. And that is still the best crab cake I've ever eaten. That being said, paying out of pocket when the budget is tight might be a real consideration.

And isn't it wonderful when you get special attention with service like that? I left Didi a nice big gratuity that evening. He was working his tail off and was just so professional. We've had a couple of servers like that at Yachtsman Steakhouse before, but Didi might be one of the best on property.

Hi Annie! :wave2: I think you and your husband would love it. Obviously they are awesome with seafood but their steaks are great also! It's more of a "grown up restaurant" but if you appreciate great food and service I'd recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the congrats! I was telling DW last night that it's a really neat accomplishment considering we didn't start the thread until June 11. I'm honored the people seem to be really enjoying it!

I don't care for fish, but my DH does. And I think the steak there is one of the best on property. Yay for your wonderful meal!

I was really pleasantly surprised by the steak! I KNEW I loved the snapper and almost just ordered it, but I was glad that I got the duo to include the steak as well.

I agree with you 100%. The boat was relaxing, provided great views and vantage points, and provided us with transportation to our destination! This worked out to be a wonderful Disney World day!

I tell ya, I thought the same thing about the steak when they brought it out. And remember, I had already had one very overcooked steak that day for lunch at T-REX. When I saw it I thought "oh no, another burned steak." Then DW reminded me that in the description it was called a char-crusted steak. She was right. Upon cutting into the steak it was cooked just right. So the flavoring of the char was there, but it wasn't tough as leather.

Fabulous updates from what reads as a fabulous trip! And congrats on making June's top ten!

Looking forward to more reading!

All caught up! First and foremost -- congratulations on being in the top 10!! I think it's awesome!

Anyway - what a nice gesture your server did to accommodate your DD! Those berries look wonderful and fresh. At some point we will need to try that restaurant. Everything looks fabulous! :)

When I first started reading we were a few days our from our first ever to trip to WDW. We were there for two weeks and now I've caught up it is fun to look at some of the pictures and know where they are!

I will tell you my trick for getting my twin boys to be in pictures when they were teens and we used to go DLR every summer. They always rolled their eyes about being in a picture. So the next summer I made up a photo scavenger hunt. They got points for finding and being in a picture with the things listed. The more points they had, the better the prizes- like extra snacks or no chores when we got home. And I got great pics! ;)

And finally I have to thank you for validating my choice to not get the school bread. I went back and forth on it. We were paying out of pocket and I was kind of full anyway. I looked at someone else's and thought it looked kind of dry inside so I decided not to. I'd try it, I just didn't want to pay for it.

Can't wait to read more and Tower of Terror was my favorite ride! Just like floating!

Hi pigletgirl! :wave2: Thanks! I was pretty excited about the top 10...pretty cool!

I really thought that was great that our server and the kitchen did something that not only made my DD feel special, it made ALL of us feel special. And it is hard to beat fresh in-season berries in June!

Hi! :wave2: I hope you all had an awesome wonderful trip!

What a cool idea about the photo scavenger hunt. Bribery will usually work most of the time! ;)

The afternoon we got school bread was not long after a huge lunch at Tutto Italia, so I definitely wasn't hungry....but DW was just dying to try it. It wasn't bad or anything, it just didn't live up to the hype.

Isn't Tower of Terror amazing? The attention to detail and the amazing visuals...one of my absolute favorites. And the drop is just plain fun! :woohoo:

It was about 8:30pm on Monday, June 2 and we had just enjoyed a wonderful meal at Flying Fish Cafe. After finishing my entree I walked outside and took a few pictures:

This one's my favorite:

I went back inside to join the rest of the family as desserts were arriving at the table, (as seen in the previous chapter.)

After the meal, we all left Flying Fish ready to head back to Disney's Hollywood Studios for Extra Magic Hours until midnight! We saw the friendship boat approaching the dock so decided to ride back over to DHS.

As we were approaching Disney's Hollywood Studios we could see Illuminations behind us. (Sorry for the blurring pics):

We were there during the Star Wars Weekends, but since we've already done that we avoided them for this trip.

The MDE app was showing the standby wait times at Rock n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror at 40 minutes, but only 10 minutes at Star Tours. Since we didn't get to ride earlier we decided to ride Star Tours first:

Next it was on to Rock N Roller Coaster, which was now at a 20 minute standby! ::yes::

We actually got DS to flash the Rock N Roll horns for this pic, then DW and DD forgot! Anyway, this is one of my favorite ride pics! DD's eyes are completely closed!

Then we headed back to Tower of Terror. This time DD decided to sit this one out. She was starting to get tired and feeling a little rough.

This ride photo cracked me up! :rotfl2: DS is stoic as usual, I'm obviously having a blast, and DW is screaming for her life!

We met back up with DD and she was ready to go. We were going to do a few minor attractions but we knew we would be coming back on Thursday so we decided to call it a day.

It had been another great day!
We had slept in a bit late.
DW and I had gone to Typhoon Lagoon, ridden Crush N Gusher three or four times and floated our way around the lazy river.
We had lunch at T-REX at Downtown Disney for the first time.
DW and I had a couple of Long Island Iced Teas and a soak in the hot tub followed by a nap.
We had a fun late afternoon at Disney's Hollywood Studios where we rode Tower of Terror and Rock n Roller Coaster.
We had our first ride on the Friendship Boat, followed by an amazing dinner at Flying Fish Cafe at the Boardwalk.
We had enjoyed a late evening at DHS, riding Star Tours, RnRC, and ToT.

Tomorrow we would need to get up early for our only breakfast reservation for this trip at Boma. Also, tomorrow would be our 19-year wedding anniversary! Stay tuned!

Amazing! 15 DxDDP meals and only one breakfast?

What a fun, packed full day! I love the ToT photo, it is a classic!!

Haha, not going to lie... when I read the name Didi and then referred to as gentleman... kinda through me.

How lovely of them to come up with a unique appetizer for DD (as opposed to Didi I guess). That looks totally my speed (and quite yummy all that fruit) as I'm not a fancy type eater either. It's probably why I avoid sit down meals in Disney. We did a fancy place somewhere in Florida when i was a kid and all I wanted was a Hamburger. But they didn't have hamburgers. To their credit, they created the most bizarre "hamburger" ever with 2 thick slices of fancy bread and a giant meatball, lol. It looked like a foot high. But I got my hamburger.

I so love the whole of the Boardwalk area. Beautiful in the daytime... extraordinary at night.

I can't lie... as much as I love it, my eyes still close in RnRC. I think its a reflex.
