12 vs 14 bit. Compressed vs lossless. Any real advantages?

typically shoot in 14 but lossless. My thinking being why not capture as much data/range as possible

However as storage grows I started reading between the variances. From what I can gather outside of extreme over/under exposures there is reLly no noticeable difference. And even in those tests I saw I wouldn't want to use the quality anyway

So aside from maybe a pro needing it for some reason is there any reaso. To shoot 14 over 12 or lossless over compressed?

What's the difference is file size?

3-4 MB per file on average but would depend what u are comparing. Worst case of 12 bit compressed to 14 lossless is 6 MB

This is much debated..... The reality is, the end result differences are very minute. The only time I've seen any impact demonstrated, is when extensively pushing up shadows... The 14 bit uncompressed files have slightly more latitude. I've heard that with things like astro-photography, you can possibly get some artifacts with the compression. From everything I've seen, 99.999% of the time, there is no difference.

If I'm doing burst shooting, I'll change to 12-bit compressed for a bigger buffer. In theory, I try to keep it at 14 bit lossless rest of the time, just in case there is a difference. But in reality, I often forget to switch it back, and it makes no difference.

for the same of 6 MB at the most, I'd go for the best quality RAW file I can.
