12-27 live from the Magic

What happened?

They should have someone at DVC who can help in situations that arise with DVC members.

Hi Suzanne!

I was on the ship the same time you were! I saw you numerous times, but was too shy to approach you. We had brunch at Palo at the same time, and I think you caught me staring at you once or twice. We even shared an elevator once. Sorry to hear you had problems, but we had a couple of problems as well, but concierge was quick to fix them for us.

Happy New Year!

Suzanne just said - "Just came home and glad to be home. IT was a long trip. "

My red flags are flying . I usually say after a cruise "Just came home sure wish the cruise was longer . It was a short trip , went by way to quick. "

I'll be on the Magic in 4 weeks , I'm anxiously waiting to hear the details .

I actually went to Guest Services with my problem. It had to do with they way we were treated in the dinning room or lack of service. I have never been treated so rudely in my entire life. Our wait staff basically ignorned us. We NEVER saw our head waiter and I went to guest services for his name. I also told them why. Our food server was wacky. She asked me the 2nd night she saw me how it felt to be pregnant, b/c she thought she was pregnant!?!?! Also on the 2nd night it took us an hour and a half to get our cold food. She of course gave us the excellence speach and asked if there was anything wrong. We told her and she said she would correct it. Correct it she didn't of course. At every meal she would drill us to make sure everyone was feeling ok. My mother was tired the first night and she kept asking my mom what was wrong. My mother kept telling her that she was just tired from the long day, but she just wouldn't let up. I made the mistake of drinking way way way way way too much one night and had my first hangover the next day, so I was taking it easy (especially with the seas that also were bothering me) and she just wouldn't lie a dead dog lie. Then Brianna became overtired at the end of the cruise and the questions came about her. Our assistant server would only give us our drinks and then never refill them. No, I take that back, she did refill my mother's the last night. She did mine ten minutes later even though my drink was gone first. Our server and assistant server were never on the same page. This was the first cruise that I would actually go look at the menu ahead of time to see IF I wanted to go to dinner. I actually didn't go twice. Once b/c I went to Palos instead (I always double dipped in the past) and the second night I ordered room service with Brianna. That second night she called our cabin at 9:30 and questioned my father on why we didn't come to dinner. My parents ended up being fitted in at Palo's. I also went to Guest Services about the way I was treated at Sessions. I was completly ignored. I was there for 30 minutes and tried getting someone to help me (hey I wanted to spend money and they didn't want it ?!?!?) They weren't busy. Two waiteress were talking with the bartender and the third waitress was talking about something totally inappriopriate with two other customers. I explained what happend to Guest Services in detail, they took my name and room number along with what happened, but I never heard back. Yes, I did have some really good experiences. Diversions I loved! Alex was wonderful and we did mention what a fab waiter he was on the comment card. I meant some wonderful CM on the cruise. It was just a same about the food service. I also decided that the time has come to try another cruisline for a 7 day cruise. We requested a quote for next summer on the 7 day western and had sticker price shock. I personally like the Wonder better the the Magic, so will try to get a good FL resident rate next summer with that. Will do a trip report soon, but have to catch up on everything on the homefront first!

Hey Topper, you should have said hi. I met several people on the cruise that came up to me and asked are you Suzanne. Was kind of neat. Was unable to go to the DIS meet b/c we had tea at Palo. Saw Lisa and her husband several times.

wow... that's horrible!! I don't think I have ever heard of service that bad on DCL!

That is why I'm writing the letter. The funny thing is that we don't go on DCL for the characters, b/c we can see them any day of the week we want. We go on DCL for the service which it lacked BIG time in the dinning room.

Ditto on the drink refills. Although our servers have been excellent so far, we learned right away that multiple drinks must be ordered our first night with our servers. DH drinks like a thirsty camel, and will consume about 5 glasses of soda with his meal. The refills don't come fast enough for him, so he lets them know at the get go - keep them coming!

I'm sorry your latest experience soured you. Unfortunately, the service can be about the same on other lines, and you may pay for those refills on your cruise tab.

correct me if I am wrong but it was you, your mother and DD right? I have heard woman complaining that they feel they recieve poor service in regular resteraunts because men are percieved as better tippers (please everyone note I said "percieved!!" I don't agree with that)
Do you think it was something like that? Or do you think they were just incompetent?

Did you ask to be seated at a different table with a different server team? U have not had trouble keeping the refills coming for water or soda onDCL, but last February on Princess we could NEVER get refills.....and the soda was lousy....flat, stale. I complained loudly since I had purchased their soda mug, but never got a decent glass of diet coke fo5r a week. I wished I had not purchased the mug, though theirs was far less money than DCL. You could buy a can of pop anywhere on board for a dollar....so that would have been the way to go. What does DCL charge for a can of soda?

Will you be sharing the names of these servers with the rest of us so that if we are placed at their tender mercies we know to request a change?

It was my mother, daughter and father. Personally when it's just my mother and I or even my daughter and I, we usually get bad service. They were just bad all around. The irony in the whole thing is that the last night she was begging for an excellence in the rating survey. (she didn't get it). She told me that she could tell me why it's important and I told her I know why it's important to her. When we receive excellent service on DCL, they have never told us they are striving for excellent service, they just provided it. We did receive the best service on our last night when it was just my mother and myself. But breakfast this morning was a total joke.

Genie Dana, I know that other cruise lines you pay for the drinks and this was my 4th DCL and I personally haven't cruised with anyone else so far. My parents have and they've received excellent service, but the food was so so. I also NEVER had a problem with getting multiple drinks before with DCL. It's just that we spent a ton of points and money for this cruise and it dumbfounds me with our dining room experience.

Your dining experience sounds horrible. I'm wondering if it is possible to request a change of table/servers in case there is this type of problem. We had fabulous servers on our cruise, and we enjoyed our tablemates very much, but I wouldn't want to be stuck with someone horrid for 7 dinners. I've thought of requesting a table for our party of 4, but on previous cruises I've enjoyed meeting new people and discussing the shore excursions, how the day went, etc. There was a male at the table adjacent to ours on our last cruise that I would not have wanted to share my meals with...I felt very sorry for his tablemates...boorish behavior, late everynight...I'm sure you get the picture. And if someone kept questioning me about my health I'd have been a mad woman...I wonder if your server had a language problem ?

Wow... I'm really sorry to hear of your dining experience. That's terrible and I know how much it would shadow my vacation.

Hope you are able to get results with your letter....

Suzanne , In your opinion do you think this was an isolated problem or a broader problem with DCL ? I noticed this was your 4th DCL cruise and sorry to hear of this , hope its not a trend .
We will start our 6th DCL cruise in 4 weeks on the Magic . I hope you share DCL's reply to your letter on this board .

I think it's only an isolated problem since we were given lots of time to see what the rest of the room was up to. I will share with ya'll the reply I receive from DCL. I guess I'm lucky that this is only the 2nd problem I've had with Disney in the past ten years. The first problem was an easy solve once I talked to the right person.

And now you know why I make it a point to go directly to Dining Room Changes upon embarkation and specifically ASK for the server I want. It does make a difference and Suzie, I am so sorry that you had a poor/non-existant serving team.

A lousy serving team makes for a lousy dining experience. DCL, you have some 'splaining to do!

I have to say that this must have been an isolated problem with Suzanne's server team. We had the team of Jean from France, Maria from England and our head server was Jeevan (we saw him plenty in the dining rooms and other areas of the ship). They were such a fun group and we received excellent service from each of them. Sadly, Jean and Maria's contracts are ending in the next 2 months, but if you are going soon, I highly recommend them!

Maria stopped us on the way out on the last night and thanked US for making the trip so much fun for her. She stated that she couldn't remember a more fun table than ours! (We were a party of 3 adults seated alone at a 4 top)

I hope DCL listens to you Suzanne. There are far too many excellent servers onboard, and the duds should be reassigned to scraping plates at Topsiders ;)

Maybe Suzanne will recognize my partner and I from this picture of us just before heading to Animator's Palate for our lifeboat drill:

We don't normally have goofy faces, or do we?

Good luck with your letter Suzie! My experience is that if you are DVC you are treated differently (by that I mean poorly). I debated writing my own letter but decided why bother. Paid cash for this cruise, we will see if I am treated better.

Just wanted to point out that while I have no doubt that you get treated differently if you are DVC, I assume that in Suzanne's case it wasn't a DVC issue. How would the servers in the Dining Room or Sessions know if you were a DVC guest or a paying guest?

Or were you referring to the way DVC guests are treated by Guest Services?

I'm cc DVC since they acted like my travel agency to make them aware of the problem. I don't believe that I was treated this way b/c I booked through DVC, but dealing with DVC with cruises before you go is sometimes liking having a root canal. I know AnnMorin had a prob before she went on her cruise. DCL wouldn't help her b/c she booked through DVC and DVC wasn't very helpful at all.

So sorry for your experience in the dining room. I just got back from the 7 day Western Magic which sailed on the 3rd of January. We too had head server Jeevan and our server was Adrian from England. Catalin was our Asst. Server. I am an extremely strict "rater" of service quality and when I am at a restaurant I tip accordingly. Great service is 20-25% and poor service gets 1-5%.

If I had Adrian at a shoreside restauant he would have gotten about 17% tip. Catalin, however, would have gotten about 22%. While there were some breaks in service and we got the excellence speech, both were competent wait staff. Catalin even served us at a lunch when he wasn't our asst. wait person as he saw the other asst. was busy with another table. He got our drinks even before we had a chance to sit down.

If they would tone down the excellent speech it would have been more enjoyable for us.

This shows that there is different quality in DCL just as there is in any other industry
