12/24/08 Christmas Cruise on the Wonder

Jim "scuba diver" thanks for some excellent advise. :thumbsup2 I especially appreciate the part about letting the kidlings do things on their own. DD is not into anything involving water. :hippie: DS is part seal. pirate: In fact his career ambition is to become a Navy SEAL but that could be a whole other thread :scared: This is such a short cruise I'm tempted to to skip the shore excursion entirely. Has anyone else done that before? Anyone thinking of doing that this time?

Another crazy week behind me. Only got called by the school four times, only had to go get a child twice. Only one emergency doctor visit, no ambulance this time. It was a good week. :scared1:

In Nassau we will not be booking anything, unless we do a shark dive and that is a lot of work for just two dives. Otherwise will may or may not even get off the ship. If we do get off it will be to walk around The Queens Steps and stuff down top.

The ship sure is nice and quiet when everyone else is at shore.

First of all, AWESOME HOUSE ANDY!!! :worship: My sister lives in Flowery Branch, north of you. I still have yet to see her house. Perhaps I need to move to Atlanta. ;) I've got connections at the hospitals there. Sweet tat, too. Very cute. And original.

That sounds like a good day.

And don't forget about the cooking demo that will probably have in the morning.

Palo's filet and chocolate souffle are out of this world.

Cooking demo???? Oh, I know what I'M DOING!!! And I have dreamed about the chocolate souffle. Never had it as I have never been on a cruise but it's right up my alley. My only concern is that I am going to want EVERYTHING on the menu. This is usually a problem for me. I love food.

The water is just to cold for DD in December. It will be in the lows 70's.
quote]

You know, I was really worried about this. But, after I realized that Schlitterbahn water is a constant 72 degrees year round, I didn't worry too much. It's cold at first but then you get used to it. Although we had a wetsuit when we did the snuba at Epcot, I remember the same feeling. But we will be outside with sun, so it should be good. Another reason why I don't feel compelled to do Atlantis is because we are in Schlitterbahn's backyard. I've been going there for 30 years and it has only gotten bigger. And rated best waterpark for 10 years. Much bigger than Atlantis. Although the slide where you go through the shark tank in a tunnel would be awesome.

I would check back again at 90 days when the reservations have to be paid in full. You may find a number of cabins open up at this date when final payment is due and some people have to back out for a variety of reasons.

Sounds like a great idea!! I was really bummed. I guess this coming Saturday is the 90 day mark?

The Mom will correct. Lisa was 5 and Matt was 9. It was 1999.

:lmao: Y'all are hilarious. I thought you guys might be married before you mentioned it. Here's a question DH asked me today....If a man is alone in a desert and says something, is he still wrong? :rotfl2: OF COURSE!!!

Looks like no vacation for us in 2009 either, Courtney.

:scared1: What prices!! Perhaps DH and I should just go. :rolleyes1 I should mention that we are planning a little skiing in Taos Ski Valley for Spring Break. It will be the kid's first. :scared: Just nothing after that until summer 2010 unless we take a little trip to San Antonio, New Braunfels, or Austin that summer.

Annette, what time are you guys doing the Palo dinner? We are planning doing something similar eating with the kids but trying to get a sunset time. We'll have to go work off the Palo dinner before heading to meet the kids. :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Scuba Diver, we can't take corkscrews on board, right? Do you pay the corking fee or how do you get past that? I do like the idea about Bailey's in the Yoohoo bottles and vodka in the water bottles or something like a camelbak. They sell something that is undetectable via xray...:rolleyes1

And my kids have NOOOOO problem ordering whatever they want. They will eat ANYTHING!!! Last trip to WDW I got the Deluxe DP because of where we were going to eat. One dinner, both kids got shrimp appetizers, twin lobster tails for entree, and one heck of a dessert. They eat sushi....anything. I even asked what veggie to go for Christmas dinner and they voted for brussel sprouts! I know....they're weird. :confused3

I love your suggestions and can't wait for scuba.mom's version. ;)

Can you do a tour of Atlantis' aquarium or something but not through DCL? I think the kids would at least like to see that.

And...hurricane update in a little bit. It's time for BAKED ZITI!!! :goodvibes

aquarium... just take a cab and pay for it at Atlantis

If Brenda doesnt buy my house I'll let you have the next crack at it TxdeVille:thumbsup2

Time to get back to watching hockey. NHL network is showing the Traverse City Prospect Evaluation Tournament... Glad all of the Texans are doing well

So, the rain we were supposed to get wasn't as bad as predicted. Although we did get some, as well as wind. And the weather today was cooler than normal. :thumbsup2 I was too busy Saturday recovering from a nasty GI bug. Andy, you lost 1 lb.....I lost 4. Not my recommendation but it was mentioned in "The Devil Wears Prada" that "I am one stomach flu away from being at my goal size."

As for my family in Houston, they didn't fare so well. Mostly DH's family. They are on the north side of Houston and the eye passed right through them. They were ready with a generator in the driveway but didn't test it before needing to use it. Something was blown and it didn't work BUT they hooked up to a neighbor's and all is well. Last report was that they would be without electricity for at least a week, 2-4 weeks tops. HOWEVER, they got their electricity restored late this afternoon. No damage to the house or anything like that.

One of the buildings downtown lost ALL windows up to the 43rd floor due to the pressure. And all the interior furniture is now on street level...outside the building. The medical center (4 hospitals) got smart after a huge flood several years ago and relocated their generators to the top floors. They were originally in the basement and were flooded. Visitors and family members were bagging patients that were ventilator dependent since there wasn't enough staff to have a 1:1 ratio for every patient. My sister-in-law works for the police department down there and is currently en route to Galveston. ALL officers, regardless of position, are armed. There is a curfew in effect with no leniency whatsoever to be given. They don't want looting like what happened in New Orleans. There is also strict gas rationing...no more than 5-10 gallons. Several gas stations here ran out today and I saw prices jump 25 cents in a matter of hours.

Guess we are pretty lucky.....

Sure you can take corkscrews. You can't take knives or swords. I don't pay a corking fee because I don't take a bottle of wine to dinner. I take half a bottle in my glass and then carry that into dinner.

I have heard you can put liquor in water bottles. I don't drink liquor that much. What's the worst that could happen....they take it from you. Oh well.

We decided to do a 9:00pm sitting. Eat a light dinner with the kids and then go have a nice dinner together. My kids are the same way Courtney. When we eat out we eat Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Greek you name it. Some kids live on PB and Jelly because they go through stages where that is all they eat. Believe me I know dd12 ate pb and j every day for lunch for 10 months when she was 5 she loved it so much!

:lmao: lushes. Dh will like the wine idea!

Scuba Mom and I discussed this Friday night over dinner. We will share some ideas with you, but remember they are only our ideas about what works for us. They may not work for you, but through trial and error we have found ways to make DCL a great family vacation, for us.

I'll let her reply with her own ideas.

My ideas......pack your own wine and don't feel bad about taking it into breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I like wine, but don't like to pay the high premium when I can just bring it with me. I will pack a few large plastic wine goblets, fill them up, and take them into dinner. Never had a problem. My DD will carry my small port glass for me. I will take champaign to breakfast and they will add the orange juice.

Try new things on the menu and this goes for your children as well. This is a time to explore. It's included. If you don't like it, that's okay. Order something else. We have had family table mates where the kids only order chicken fingers. I think that is a waste. Try something new and if they don't like it then order chicken fingers. We have been with kids would did not like to venture, but did when eating with us and they loved it. Now they order only the expensive stuff. That is the down side.

Order what you want, but eat what you order (unless you really don't like it) I will order every desert every night. I love desert. I will try them all. Some I don't like and won't finish them, but all the others are history. I will order multiple apps, they are small and I like to try them. I like to combine dishes and the servers will try their best. They are there to have help us have a good time. Don't abuse them, but ask for what you want and show appreciation when they come through. And don't forget to pace your food in take. It's a long cruise and there is more food right around the corner.

Remember that you can't do it all. There are to many things happening to try and fit them all in. One Christmas cruise DW actually made a spread sheet for each of us showing what we would be doing each hour of every day. We did a lot that cruise, but were dead tired. Now we just plan a few things and then let the day just happen.

Remember too it won't all be perfect. Something just won't live up to your expectations. It might be bad table mates, weather, ect. No vacation is perfect so just make the best of it and enjoy what you have. You could be at work.

Order room service. It's included. Make sure you tip the waiters. We like having the cheese plate in the afternoon since we have late dining. The kids love ordering sandwiches, etc. Having the cheese plate with a nice glass of wine is a great start to the evening.

Unless you have an early flight, don't rush off the ship on the last day. We go up to Topsiders, sit down and enjoy the morning. We have stood in the line before, but no more. We don't mind being the last off. We do a review of the cruise, what we liked and did not like, and do the survey. It's our time to relax before heading back to the real world.

Don't stop at McDonalds on the way to the port. On our first DCL we left work at 12N to drive to the port. We stopped for lunch and got there at the last minute. We then tried to get reservations (that was before they did them on line) We did not get anything. We did not know they severed lunch at noon. Now we get there early and enjoy the day.

Let the kids do what they want to do. It may not be what you want them to do. When the kids were younger we made several decisions for them. We thought DD would have a better time at Atlantis then learning to draw Mickey with her program. We were wrong. We thought DS would rather do something with us then play hockey on the deck with his program. Again, we were wrong. It took those to experiences to remind us that this is their vacation too. Let them pick what interests them. They will have a good time.

Speaking of kids, get them involved in the program on the first night so they can make friends. We can't entertain them like DCL. They are experts and do it every day. Let the kids have fun in the program. On our first cruise we were concerned until we went to pick up DS at midnight. He was dressed in a lab coat. They were about ready to make Flubber. He begged to stay. Now that they are older we have just three rules for them. 1. Don't leave the ship, especially if we are not in port. 2. Meet us for dinner. That is our time to hear stories about their day. 3. Don't be the cause for Security or another DIS parent to knock on my door.

The same goes with the spouse. We don't expect to do everything together. Some things just work naturally better together, but there are many times when we do different things. That's okay.

I love the Rain Forest. There is no better place, except Palos. Take a book, a glass of wine (of course) and enjoy.

You don't have to do a shore excursion in every port and if you do, consider a non-DCL excursion. We now book all our excursions directly. They are cheaper, smaller crowds, and some times totally different. Of course there is a risk that if you don't get back you will get left, but good planning should cover that. On one trip we wanted to do the 12 metre yacht race. DD could not because DCL required age 14. However, the operator required only age 10. We booked it direct and she had a great time. There are all kinds of things to do at the ports if you spend a little time on the internet.

And the biggest piece of advise....read DIS boards. There is a great deal of information here on the boards. You will have to shift through it all, but it is all here from menus to day planners, etc. But remember, you can't do it all.

These are just my thoughts and they make not work for you, but I'm happy with them and more importantly.....DW is happy with them. If she is happy then we are all happy.

Great advice thanks:thumbsup2

I love your suggestions and can't wait for scuba.mom's version. ;)

Since we discussed this at dinner on Friday, Jim covered most of our suggestions already with the most important being - HAVE FUN AND DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

I over-scheduled the kids previously and believed if I really enjoyed something they would too. WRONG. DD and I love the shows. However, Matt spent a 10 day cruise literally eating two dinners each night. One with us and one with his friends at second seating. He never saw a show and was proud of it.

Take a book (that can get wet and not be too much of a problem) and sit on the ledge (3 - 4 inches of water) in the adult pool and read. When the ship is rocking slightly, the sloshing water feels great.

Bring (or borrow from the Spa) ear-phones to plug into the TV's on the excercise equipment. I love to use the treadmill and watch a movie (the same ones that are in your state room).

Order coffee from Room Service (the kids order a lot more than that) for breakfast. (Just hang the sign on your door the night before).

Eat Breakfast at Lumiere's - I love their eggs benedict. Eat lunch at Lumiere's (or Tritons on the Wonder). I love being served a meal rather than buffet. (However, if you enjoy buffets - Parrot Cay is less crowded than Topsiders)

Go to the Adult Beach if you want a quiet beach experience. Go to the Family Beach if you enjoy a more active beach experience.

PARENTS of young children (12 & under) go to the "remember the magic" show starring the kids in the WDW Theatre on the last day. The kids get T-shirts and Graduation Caps. They get to march in the Theatre, sit on stage, perform a song and are joined by Mickey and Minnie. The video presentation is of your kids in all of their activities throughout the cruise.

If you have any specific questions, just let me know. You might as well not make some of the same mistakes we did because we didn't know better. :thumbsup2

And don't forget about that one bar by the teen beach.

On our last cruise we went there for the first time. It was great. Don't know why we never made it there before.

We survived Ike as well - lots of rain and wind, but thankfully no damage. We did get a phone call from the county offices. Good thing DH answered...if one of the kids had listened to the recording threatening gloom and doom and "mass destruction" they would have been terrified!:scared1:

Today's weather was GORGEOUS, though! 77 and sunny - perfect!

Love the advice, Mr. and Mrs. Scuba! The RULES for the kids were my favorite! :thumbsup2

Now that they are older we have just three rules for them. 1. Don't leave the ship, especially if we are not in port. 2. Meet us for dinner. That is our time to hear stories about their day. 3. Don't be the cause for Security or another DIS parent to knock on my door.

DS-almost-11 is pretty adventurous, esp. at Disney restaurants, since he's been an "adult" on their menu for 2 years. Now he hates ordering off kid menus anywhere, so I am not worried about him. The girls are younger (7,9) and not so brave...still in the PBJ/mac&cheese stage. I'll be working on them... if only to have more food to choose from for myself!:woohoo:

SO when Disney says that alcohol IS allowed on board, does that not include liquor? I know wine is fine, and we will likely bring some, but we also like mixed drinks, so I thought I'd bring some vodka too (and the Bailey's sounds YUM!). Didn't think I'd have to hide it, according to PassPorter....:confused3

Brenda, I'm glad Michael is doing ok - that is scary!

Like the Tat, Andy...LOVE the new house! Have some serious home envy! WHat a beautiful property! COngrats!

Sounds lovely, but I'm not sure I would want to be away from home on Christmas Eve. Maybe if I lived closer to the dock and was sure I could get home in time. :santa:

So the cruise was paid off last week but by a check. The TA is waiting for the check to clear and then they will send a business check from the agency to DCL, which will probably then have to clear before I can book Palo, etc:confused3

Oh, and the TA talked to Disney about switching out the Rainforest Spa to something that my Dr wont be freaking over but they cant do it. They suggested the cheaper package that doesnt include Palo or early booking... I think I will just see if I can give the pass to my mom:santa:

So glad everyone is healthy and safe. Brenda and the Texans have had a harrowing week. It has been raining cats and dogs here in Kansas, though the son has finally come out.

Serial posting: :rotfl: (still laughing at that one, JoDale)

We used a TA last time (seemingly reputable-through USAA) and ended up frustrated. They required an additional $750 deposit, on top of Disney's $750 deposit, which they "held in a secure account" until the final payment was due. They also drug their feet in getting our cruise documents to us, which arrived via DHL the day before we left, even though Disney had sent them to the TA 30 days prior. Never again.

I have my own "secure account", thank you very much.

Ok that was random:confused3 Anything else you would like to add?:happytv:

I'm thinking they clicked on the wrong link. Sounds like they were thinking about the cruise just before ours, that gets in on Christmas Eve. :confused3

Thanks for the well wishes for Michael. He is doing much better now:thumbsup2

Well kids, my calender shows 94 days before our vacation begins. :dance3: It'll be time to get the luggage out of the attic before you know it. :yay: Anyone done any shopping yet? I got alot of new clothes when I went down a size. Course after a long summer, I'm afraid some of those may be a little snug:sad2: Guess it's time to step things up a notch, and get serious again.

Hi Adrianna:wave2: Miss you. And yes so far this week has been much better for us. But then, it is only Tuesday:lmao:

Andy, sorry, DH laughed at me when I told him I know someone with a house for sale in Atlanta area. :confused3 Guess Courtney will have to buy it. Oh wait. She can't buy it. Then they will move away, and won't be close enough to visit next summer:scared1:

I hope you are able to transfer the pass to your mom Andy. I'm sorry they won't let you choose something else.:flower3:

Scuba mom and Jim, thanks for the advice. I 100% agree with letting the kids do what they want to do. When the twins were 8,they had so much fun, we hardly ever saw them. Now that they are teenagers, we probably won't be able to get rid of them:rotfl2:

Courtney, are you still working as hard as you were the last couple weeks? Take care of yourself, you have a vacation to get ready for.
