A limo picked us up at 10am for the trip to the airport. Arrived, checked in 2 hours before our international flight, Vancouver. We were to leave Baltimore at 12:20pm, eastern, to Chicago and catch a connection at 2:30, central. Our flight was delayed in Baltimore and we missed our connection by 10 minutes, drat. I figured our rescheduled would be on time. NOT! Didn't leave O'Hare until after 10:30pm and got to Vancouver at 2am (5am Baltimore time).
Our hotel was lovely, in a great area downtown, walking distance to English Bay. Thursday we took the trolley around the beautiful city. Friday we hired a limo to take us to Capillano Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mt and the Whistler/Blackcomb resort. Cheryl was great, interesting, friendly and very informative. Sarah and I walked across the suspension bridge, not for the faint of heart. At Grouse Mt we rode a tram, I think 2700 vertical feet. At the top we saw wonderful carving, story poles, a rescued grizzly bear and a wolf.
Arrived at the port at 11am expecting terrible check-in process, from reading the boards. Pleasant wait with coffee, tea, juice and pastries. We chatted with other cruisers and were on board by 12:10p. Radiance of the Seas is a lovely ship on the inside, lots of glass walls and even 8 glass elevators. It is very difficult not to compare Radiance to Magic. I prefer the external look/design of Magic but the interiors of both ships are beautiful and very different.
The food and service on Magic is (in my opinion) better. Don't think the food was yucky or the service poor, it is just not as good.
We had perfect weather for Southeast Alaska. Cloudy and cool on our first sea day. In Juneau it was mid 60's and partly sunny. Our first glacier, Mendenhall Glacier. Then we took the Mt Roberts tram to the top of Mt Roberts Mountain. Not much compared to Grouse Mt in Vancouver. Saw several eagles flying in the harbor. In Skagway Jeanne stayed aon board while Sarah and I went on the Wilderness Safari. It was cold, 50's, grey and windy. We took a power catamaran from Skagway to Glacier Point. After a short bus ride we were fitted with rain gear, boots and life jacket. Short hike to the lake to board our 20' canoes. There were 8 of us and one guide. How surprised were we when the guide announced the canoe had a small electric motor and we just paddled for 'show'. We rounded a bend and there was Davidson Glacier. It was awesome. And very cold and windy, glad we had the motor!!!! Steered clear of the growlers, icebergs in fresh water.
The 'blue ice' is beautiful. We even saw a team of climbers on the ice. Artic terns and a few eagles. The town of Skagway is 4 blocks X 9 blocks. Sarah and I loved the wooden sidewalks.
Wednesday we cruised Hubbard Glacier. 300' high and over 1/2 mile wide in the bay. Lots of BIG growlers to dodge (in a 960' ship). Just incredible to see. Saw and heard about 5-6 calving, ice breaking off the glacier and falling into the bay. Sounds like thunder. Radiance was having trouble maneuvering in the current and dodging the ice so we didn't get to stay for the 3 hours. It was sleeting, cold and windy but Jeanne and I stayed out for over an hour. Then we watched from our balcony, we lucked out and it was under cover. Because of the clouds didn't get to see the mountain range. We did get a quick view of Mt St Elias ( over 20 miles inland). Then on to Ketchikan. Mid 70's and sunshine! Rode the duck for a tour of the town and the harbor. We had GREAT weather for a Southeast Alaska cruise. Our last day was high 60's and partly sunny. I spent the day with the binoculars looking for wildlife, bears, moose, whales, eagles.... I saw 2 spouts and 3 shapes in the water but only one orca, came completely out of the water! How amazing!
