Nassau Tribune Article:
The Tribune

I've never been a fan of Nassau, especially now traveling with young children. :sad2: I have to agree with Pete, I've always considered Nassau the armpit of the Caribbean. It's sad, but this doesn't change my opinions of the island.

Not surprised by this at all. It's got to be very tempting for the impoverished people of Nassau to watch middle class Americans flood the islands by the ship load, spending more money in an hour that most locals make in a month.

I've been to Nassue 3 times now & have seen the worst of it, just as I'm sure anyone who has been there has as well. But I have never felt threatened or in danger at any time. But maybe times are changing?

People robbed in Nassau. Let me take a quick look at the I'm surprised-O-rometer. Huh, nothing registering, I guess I'm not surprised.

I'm not surprised either, since people are robbed in EVERY city in America also. Nassau is no different. Not better, but not worse either. Tourists are robbed in Orlando also....Just not 11 at a time.:sad2: Recently, kids have been targeted by sex offenders in WDW water parks. Just be smart and vigilant, because you can be a victim of crime anywhere.

True, but execution-style at gunpoint is not something you hear about everyday.:scared1: And how can you compare a Disney waterpark to an impovished island port?

If you read the Nassau Tribune article, the tourist hired a cab driver to take them on a tour. The driver said police were supposed to be guarding the area, they were not. There was an unarmed security guard there who was useless.

I'm just saying it's not always safe to go out on your own. I'd rather pay the cruiseline's over priced excurison fees that risk driving on my own.

The place was a piece of crap before the robbery, and will still be crap in the years to come. I've been there before on a Disney cruise and would go again, but I wouldn't leave the ship next time.

I just have to wonder what about this robbery is "execution style"? Execution style is when you are laid on the floor, face down and shot in the head from behind?

The person I feel sorry for is the poster on cruise critic who was called a liar for reporting this story. Can you imagine? You are a victim of a hold up, go on a message board to warn others to be careful, only be called a liar? Talk about being victimized TWICE!

I hope the people who called the person on that thread you psoted a liar are real embarased

to me, execution-style would have the person on their knees, then shot from behind.

the people on CruiseCritic can be INCREDIBLY nasty. It makes me VERY thankful for the stringent rules and wonderful moderators here on the DIS. :thumbsup2

We have been to Nassau and absolutely loved it. Yes there are horrible places there just like there are every where else in the world. And we much preferred Nassau of Cancun.

Easily, they BOTH can be dangerous. One just doesn't appear to be dangerous. Question....Do you think that criminals care that it's a Disney waterpark? No, they don't. The name on the entrance doesn't matter. BTW. I have been to Nassau. Didn't like it.

i'm so glad you said that. it is nice to hear a positive account of Nassau. i have heard such negative things. it is a real shame!

I have to say that I would pass if Nassau were a port again. Went this summer and did not care for what we saw. I would rather enjoy my day staying on the ship. IMO;)

There was a horrible crime near my hometown where several women were killed in a Lane Bryant store. It was done "execution style" in the manner I described, so I wondered if they had those 11 people actually lay on the street and why wouldn't that garner just a ton of attention??

Also, I agree with you about the folks on Cruise Critic. I haven't been to that board since about 2003 or 2004. I think the mods try really hard, but the board is huge and stuff just gets flaming before they can get their with the extinguishers. It's a tough board. I've only been on one Vegas board that was actually harsher than CC.

We got off the ship on 1.0 as well. We took the water taxi to Paradise Island walked over to Atlantis and checked that out: aquarium was great, slots were tight :lmao: Then took a cab to the Queens Staircase, and hopped over to Fort Fincastle and the watertower too. We were the only ship in port so only one stall in the small mkt was open/set up. There was no security there when we were there, and only 1 other tourist. We then walked to Graycliff for DH to get some cigars, and then browsed our way back to the ship.

A single fellow asked us for some change as we approached the Queen's Staircase, we declined and continued on, and I checked to make sure he didn't follow us. I was very aware of our surroundings but did not feel in any danger at any point. We enjoyed seeing a little of this port.

Realistically, these ports are the real deal folks...not "Disney-fied" versions of countries a la Epcot. Remember, I  Disney & Epcot...but I just have very different expectations when I travel to other places.

cheers,
:flower3:

i can only assume that this is the reason that most folks are disappointed with Nassau. i heard one podcast where Pete had a bit of a rant about it and saying that he doesn't want to see that stuff when he's on a holiday. which i can understand. we all need our escapes from reality sometimes.

but i guess i'm just different. i know i'm going to love the cruise but i also like reality and i like to see how other people live. it is interesting to me, even if it can be a bit depressing.

Its not just that some places aren't Disneyfied, they are filthy, dangerous and yes, depressing. Most people are wishing for a bit of tropical paradise, not slums.

is Nassau really a slum though, or just a low socio economic town? i haven't been there so i guess i'll have to reserve judgement, but just because a place isn't as neat and tidy as what you're used to, doesn't mean it is a slum.
