My neighbors 4 year old was having an asthma attack.

DBF is an EMT, and I myself have dealt with an asthmatic child, so she called for our help. She has 4 kids- this one being a twin. They had problems when born, low weights, eating etc....

Anyway- we run over and he is just coughing up a storm, thankfully his nebulizer is given via a mask so he was getting his albuterol. The other 3 were sleeping, thankfully, and he was sitting on her lab on the kitchen floor with his treatment.

DBF picked him up from her and carried him outside. Knowing that cooler air helps...mom is freaking though trying to stay calm. This was the first time for her that the treatment did not work. I knew how she felt, as the first time DD8's didnt work, it was a feeling of such helplessness!

I tell her I'll call the ambulance, and that they will let her go with him, she calls her aunt to follow the ambulance. Her aunt comes with her 2 teenage daughters to stay with the other 3

I call our PD, and tell the dispatch whats going on- request that the ambulance and fire truck come without lights and sirens, as we have 2 houses full of kids asleep, and the little guy is already freaked enough...they do, which was great. Fire truck arrived first and they put him on oxygen. ambulance arrived shortly after, and the medic took over. DBF carried him to the ambulance, and the little guy made marks in his neck holding on....it took about 2 minutes to get him to let go, but once he saw mom in the ambulance with him he was a bit better. I think, knowing that DBF was calm, made him feel better...and he needed that. As a parent of an asthmatic- even though I'm trying to get DD to calm down, she can sense my nerves and the fact that I'm not really calm!

Anyway- mom just called me to tell me she was there until 4, and they gave him 6 treatments. Put him on prednisone, pulmicort, and diagnosed him with croup as well as asthma aggrevations...I knew that bark sounded familiar last night!....

He's still not breathing 100%, and is still barking...the downfall is with this rain today, the humidity level is high, so his breathing is aggrevated already.

Keep him in your thoughts please!!!

Thanks
Brandy

Wow. Good thing you guys were next door. Hope the little fellow continues to improve. :wizard:

That is SO scary! All of my kids had croup attacks and asthma, DS11 spent the night in the hospital because of one. I remember having croup as a kid and I spent a couple days in the hospital because of it. It is very frightening for everyone. Glad to hear the little one is ok!

Sending wishes for a quick recovery for your neighbor's son! :wizard:

I was up late last night with my DS4 who had picked up croup (it's viral) from somewhere and it had caused his asthma to act up. Luckily, I have pulmicort, albuterol, and prednisone in the house and was able to make him comfortable.

The humidity will actually help the croup, but could worsen the asthma. When DS gets a nasty case of croup (usually in the middle of the night), I'll pop him in for a nice warm shower and the moist air helps immensely. :thumbsup2

I'll be keeping your neighbor in my thoughts today.

Last week the same thing happened to my nephew, who just turned 1. He woke up not being able to catch his breath and SIL called 911. They took him to the ER and he was diagnosed with croup and given prednisone. Over the winter, he was diagnosed with bronchiolitis....I wonder if this is leading towards asthma??? Can a baby so young be diagnosed with asthma? I am thinking SIL should take him to a specialist.

THANK gOD that the two of you were right next door. The mom must have been so scared.

Prayers for the little one.

great job! my dd12 has asthma -she was sick last fall, I took her to the dr. and they almost admitted her to the hospital, from then on she took the directions from dr. more seriously. :yay:

My DS-12 has asthma also. That was very nice of you and your DBF to go and help them.
Here's hoping the little guy gets better quickly! :wizard:

I can imagine how scary that was. I have asthma and have been hospitalized many times. I was finally diagnosed at age 5, but my mom says I started having trouble around age two. I hope the little guys gets well soon.

Absolutely. Both of my brothers and I were diagnosed with asthma before we were six months old. My brothers have had to be hospitalized for it many times, but not me. I think it's because they insist on playing hockey and football, while I always stuck with ballet. ;)

Asthma is very scary, especially for young kids, and for parents who don't have asthma and can't really understand what it's like. Good thoughts to all of you
