I originaly read an article about this in "Parenting" magazine and now it's popping up all over the place. (Sorry if this has been brought up before)

This one is from October, but I can't find the "Parenting" article to link to.

If this was to fly (yeah right  ) would that mean anything with smoking involved should be "parentaly supervised"?

American Adventure?

Numerous animated features?

Seems sort of foolish. :(

I should probably add this link too:

www.smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu

They even have a screen graphic already!

I’m sorry. I know this is off topic, but I just couldn’t help myself:

They could always do to Cruella what they did to Pecos Bill and white out the tobacco product.

Wait till the Baron sees that warning. He may put 'E' warnings all over his luggage for the next trip down...

I knew I should have had that "$" in the middle of Ei$ner's name registered!!!

But you are right Sir Larry! I'm copying it and enlarging it as we speak. Not only the luggage but bumper stickers and trading pins as well!!

Hey JC and Baron, shouldn't the rating be $ not E?

Don't forget wildly expensive to see at the movies...

Oh geez.....that is pathetic, IMO. I suppose that we should not take kids to WDW either because of those EVIL smoking benches that they have throughout the parks. You CAN'T shield kids from everything, but parents CAN talk to their kids about issues such as smoking.

kaabost, I am not a smoker, but on my last trip to WDW I used one of those "Evil Benches". It was one of the few places I could get good Cell phone reception when my office called me in a panic! I guess that is just as "Evil"; at least DW thinks so ;)

Seriously, here in Dallas there is an initiative to ban smoking in all restaurants and bars. I think that they tried this somewhere in CA, and the rule was very quickly overturned. It seems that Bars, Smoking and Drinking go together. The people who mainly go to bars for this type of socializing tend smoke and drink. While there are several people who would like to go to these places who do not smoke, there seems to not be very many "No Smoking Bars". Then again, most of the restauraunts I go to are non-smoking.

I don’t smoke, don’t drink and don’t go to bars…I guess I am just boring.

People who smoke have rights too, and I think that since there are people who are quite addicted to it, they should have their special places too, EVEN at WDW. If you notice that those areas are designed so that the smoke goes mostly up and not sideways?

BTW, Cruella is clearly an evil character, and the cigarette is associated with evil. I don’t think that this particular instance encourages kids to smoke; if anything, the opposite. Next you will be saying that the show encourages children to hit puppies over the head and skin them alive…THAT would be evil.

Sorry for the rant, it's 5:00AM and I can't sleep…

ohanafamily, I couldn't agree with you more! I used to be a smoker. It has almost been a year since I quit. Hardest thing in the world to do. I still don't think that smoking outdoors is EVIL though, like you said, smoke goes up. I just get annoyed with all of this anti-smoking concentration when there are larger issues that deserve attention.

The article I read originaly pointed out many other Disney animated smokers too, and they were not all evil.

Basil for instance, smoked a pipe.

I was surprised at how many instances were cited.

Point conceded, but then again it was a trademark Sherlock Holmes, who Basil was based on, to smoke a pipe...

Try going into a bar in California and smoking... or into any non private establishment and doing it... won't happen. Smoking is banned here.

That is true about California. I find that law annoying because I don't feel that it is the governments place to decide whether or not a privately owned bar should allow smoking. If the patrons don't like smoking, they will not go. If enough do not go, the bar would then change policy.

God this is so off-topic, but I have to say:

SMOKE DOESN'T GO UP! Unless the air is dead, and there's not even a hint of a cross-breeze. From a non-smoker who is very, very irritated physically by inhaling smoke, trust me, it doesn't just go up.

Kudos to you for quitting! I know how hard it is. My mother quit about 10 years ago, and I remember how difficult it was for her. That's great you've been able to conquer it!

And as for the not smoking in restaurants, I HATE leaving Erie County in New York State, because we have an active no smoking ban in restaurants, and it is GREAT for the non smokers. Restaurants still may have smoking sections, but the smoking has to either be confined to a bar area OR, in a seperate enclosed area. Everyone's happy. The smoker's can still smoke, and they don't bother anybody.

And as for the R rating because of tobacco use, that is definitely extreme. Especially now with most cinemas requiring an accompanying adult or proof of age to see R movies. For a kid to not be able to see something like 101 Dalmations is ludicrous.

Dan, in Dallas we have most restaraunts as non-smoking, or with special smoking sections. the new law will eliminate it from all restaraunts and bars, or at least one of the versions of it. I don't smoke, I hate it when people smoke around me, and I do not go to a lot of places where people smoke. Having said that, I have a problem with the city council telling bars that they are not allowed to have people smoke in them.

I have a few friends that smoke, a couple of whom are very addicted. they have rights too, even if they do smell of smoke.

Thanks for your reply, oh snacky one...

Bars are a whole different ball game. It's part of the culture in bars, and the main reason that I don't go to them. It's only in restaurants that I have a problem with smoking.

Well then, in Dallas, a good many restaraumts would be to your liking....
