100 Million Dollar Mistake

I actually didn't see what all the hype was about with Test Track. We all go 60 on the highway everyday. Nothing new there. Most of us have driven mountain roads. TT wasn't as exciting on that aspect. We all have had to slam on the brakes at some point. And we all have driven on bad streets. Not too much exciting there either. Now if Disney wanted to make that ride bettter, they could make the "high" speed go maybe twice as fast and make it ALOT longer.

ITA! I haven't been back on TT since the first time I rode it. My own driving s a lot scarier than that!
MS is pretty cool, I'd like it better if it were longer.

I think there were many complaints about TT when it first opened. DW went on it then & said it didn't deserve all the hype. She's been on it since & says it's ok, but not a ride she would go out of her way to do. She is looking forward to trying MS. One big problem with these new rides is they had to tear down some of our old favorites (Horizons & World of Motion) to make room for them, instead of just creating new ones. Long live Spaceship Earth!!

Umm. . . does the phrase YMMV mean ANYTHING to you? I mean, your favorite ride may be lame to me, but I'd basically let it go. M: S won't be the death of WDW no matter what YOU think, either.

Deep breaths . . . put rides in perspective . . . etc.

What is YMMV? Anywho I completely agree on how they are tearing down old favorites. Like Universal Studios, when they ditched Kong, that was a plus. Horizons and world of motion were very interesting rides. As for TT I am suprised I didn't hear of any complaints. I mean come on though MS is all over the news saying it was a 100 Million Dollar mistake and that someone (can't remember name) quit and is trying to get Mike to quit. I agree. At least if anything we all agree that it is too short. Test Track never had all these problems. I think this money invested should be thrown over to NASA and let then have it. You that makes me wonder, with all the money NASA gets, why didn't they create something like this? I completely agree with you on the fact about how Disney won't fall because of this ride. Disney could have no rides in all 4 of their parks and still will get a booming buisness LOL. It's Disney. I do feel that with all this money us customers are contributing to these parks, don't you feel the money should be put to good use. Basically for all of you who "liked" it, did you come off saying WOW THAT WAS AWSOME. No I don't think so. Well maybe you did, everyone is different so I won't go there. Now take the Land, oldie but a goodie. People always love that. Figment, everyone loved it till they ****** it up. Boy did many many many many complaints come in about that. I loved that ride. See they really shouldn't have knocked out horizons. Ok in all of your opinions, would you choose Horizons or Mission Space.

We LOVED Mission: Space when we rode in November ... twice in a row (stomachs couldn't handle a 3rd time) ... while we were there the only time the line for TT was longer then M:S was when TT had broken down (again LOL).

As for Soarin' ... love it here in CA ... don't see the sense of duplicating it in Epcot, but that's Disney being cheap. It is really a nice ride, but not sure how much WDW tourists will want to experience CA while they are in FL. ;)

See Ivanova I feel the same way about that Soarin' ride. I don't know if it will be a hit. Just because it wins popularity points on the western border doesn't gurantee a success on the eastern side. I am a tad skeptical about it. I can't see how they can add a ride like that between the Land and Honey I shrunk the Audience. Can you describe Soarin' for me because I don't know how they do it.

It is actually a pretty cool ride .... you sit in one of three rows of "hang gliders" the rows are lifted up towards the screen (the row in front of you is lifted higher then you, so they don't block your view). It gives the impression of hang gliding over various parts of California ... wine vineyards, orange groves, golf course in Palm Springs, etc.

Think of how "real" the 360 circlevision makes you feel like you are really there, this beats that IMHO.

Just wish the Epcot version was soaring over something else ... like America. :)

We thought MS was great - we will say it is not a ride we would repeat on the same day for two reasons - I was a touch disoriented after and DW is not a big ride repeater but it is on our list for every trip at least once

It is something very different from Disney's other attractions and that in itself scores big points for us

thanks

I have a quick question for you M:S experts!!! ALL of us get sicker than dogs on Body Wars. Can we ride M:S without puking? BTW, we DON'T get sick on Star Tours.

Mission was quite enjoyable, uniquely Disney. A must do on all trips there now.

I rode MS on October 9th when it was the grand opening of the ride. We got to the park early, which was packed, but there was no line at all for MS. We rode MS 3 times straight without having to wait more than 2 minutes.

I don't feel it was a $100 million mistake, however, I do feel the hype about it was way outta control. It was a cool ride but nothing I would make a special trip to WDW for.

WHEW!!!! I'm delighted to hear that I may not need to use the new barf bags--teehee!:bounce:

Before we got our SP's we had a ticket for 1d/1p and had to make up our mind which one to go to. Well this was in early November so we just had to go see MS. The preshow was way longer than the ride, it actually scared a few people from riding, when the ride itself I thought was pretty tame. I have a condition called BPPV (severe vetigo) and it didn't bother me much. I also felt when we landed that it was going to countinue but it left me with the "and... whats next" feeling! Don't get me wrong it's a cool ride, but not anything like it was hyped to be... :(

Interesting so with that condition you were still fine. Then what is it that is making people sick on this ride. You don't feel like you are spinning, you just feel plastered back into your seat. That isn't that bad. Yeah that is sad when the preview is longer than the ride. And the climax at the end and you don't go falling down, that isn't exciting. I felt like this was a ride to get more money in the park (as usual) and to just throw you on the ride and throw you off it. Just keep the traffic going. I'll put it to you this way, the hype was ridiculous, the ride was extremely short, I personally didn't find the ride thrilling, and I feel that Disney could have put more thought and preparation into this ride. I think they just thought of a design in 5 seconds (not literally) and just glued a ride together.

I wish I knew what makes me sick on rides like Star Tours, Body Wars, etc. It is not a spinning because some of them don't spin--it's just the motion simulation. When the chair went back on MS and we were launching the pressure on my stomach was unbelieveable. I made it through without throwing up (and a nice CM said I should not sit down but keep going after--I think actually he didn't want me to throw up between the ride and the gift shop) but it took me a LOT longer to recover than from ST and BW.
That said, knowing my own limitations, IMHO it is a pretty cool ride. The themeing is right on target and I have a soft spot for Gary Sinise :p . My daughters (11 and 8) loved it. My son is too short--but he loves test track!

i found misson space to be incredible. my dad actually has done work with satelites and one of the projects he worked on is mentioned in the waiting area. he was truly blown away by the experience and has not stopped talking about it. i think disney did a great job!

Test Track is my least-favorite attraction at WDW. There are 2 main reasons for there being a longer wait at Test Track:
1) numerous motion-sickness warnings (although not all who should heed them do)
and 2) -M:S is a MUCH more efficient ride system than Test Track.

Also, you are not supposed to notice the spinning, it's not the intended sensation. Riding M:S and complaining "I didn't feel it spin." is like riding the old 20K ride and complaining "I didn't feel like we were only a couple of inches below the water."
If you didn't feel a spin, good! You're not supposed to!

Epcot is about to undergo a change in branding (not the first... it hasn't been themed as "a community of tomorrow" since 1994...)

While I don't think M:S was the home run Disney was hoping for, they definitely didn't stike out and M:S is a unique Disney experience.

Just as the launch and moon shot (and G's associated with those) are the best parts of M:S - while the other elements of the ride itself ("hypersleep", the landing, and the cliffhanger) are a little............lacking?............silly?..............?, is TT all that different? Afterall, the best part of TT is the high speed loop - while the other test elements are a little............lacking?............silly?..............?

So M:S and TT aren't all that different in that regard and equally subject to criticism. While M:S could have been more, at least its best parts are a unique Disney experience and something I can't do on the way home from work (ie - drive 60 mph ;)).

As for Soarin' - by all accounts it is a great attraction. Sure, a new movie would have been great, but I guess I'd rather have the attraction "on the cheap" with the Cali film than not have the attraction at all. It is going into the Land and the subject matter of the Cali film isn't a stretch for that theme. As for being part of the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT)..................well, Epcot isn't EPCOT any longer. They made a strategic decision to abandon the original acronym in order to avoid the vey criticism you levy. They knew they couldn't keep to the themes the park had when it opened so they changed the name to the more generic Epcot so as not to handcuff themselves.

And what is this about this flying over California attraction. #1 how good could they make something like this and #2, what happened to Experimental Prototype Community Of Tommorrow (EPCOT). That sure doesn't sound like this ride has anything to do with what EPCOT stands for.

Having now been to WDW & DL, DW & I agree Soarin' Over California is the best Disney attraction we've ever experienced!

I haven't experienced MS yet and am not yet sure if I'm going to try it in Feb. I'm curious, but I don't want to spend the rest of the day quesy. But I do have to say that I was very disappointed with TT. I think it's an "ok" ride definately not deserving of the hype. I only go on it if I can fastpass it. I certainly would not stand in line and wait for it.
