Walt Disney made the nomination list. That is awesome. :jumping2:

Dont forget to vote: http://tv.channel.aol.com/greatestamerican

We asked you to submit your nominees to claim the title 'Greatest American' and more then 500,000 of you responded with your picks. We've revealed the top 100 nominees and now, every Sunday in June, AOL and Discovery Channel want you to choose the 'Greatest American' of all time.

'Greatest American' premieres Sun., June 5 at 8PM ET on The Discovery Channel. We'll be counting down from the top 100 and asking you to vote via phone, SMS and online for your choice. For the first time in American television history that question will be answered by you, as we count down the top 100 Greatest Americans.

I am going to vote for Walt Disney.

You can vote for who ever you wish and that is one thing that makes this country great.

Wow - I cannot believe some of the nominees - sheesh! I remeber when some channel (may have been History) was doing the greatest people of the milenium in 2000. Walt Disney made the top 100 (although he finished behind Elvis - whatever) :sad2:

Canadians went through the motions of this farce last year. The problem is in the nomination process. Not only can individuals nominate somebody truly great such as the founders of the country, influential political or military leaders, or pioneers in other areas -- special interest groups can get together and throw their votes into the ring. There was some very unknown religious figure nominated by Seventh-Day Adventists in Canada -- hardly a great Canadian worthy of being in the top 50. That's why the American list gets people like Michael Jackson? Yuck.

Thankfully, Canadians managed to redeem the process and selected as the greatest Canadian the politician Tommy Douglas (and also grandfather of actor Kiefer Sutherland.) Tommy was the pioneer behind universal health care in Canada -- and truly a great Canadian.

This is so great for Walt and everyone that loves Disney in general. Walt Disney has changed the way that I view common People. I go to Disney World and I can see that there are actually good people in the world that care. I encourage everyone to register to vote for Mr. Walt Disney!!

June 5, 2005~~I can not wait!

Michael Jackson
Hugh Heffner
Rush Limbaugh
Ellen DeGeneres
Tom Cruise
John Edwards
Arnold Schwarznegger
Laura Bush
Hillary Clinton
Mel Gibson
Madonna
Dr. Phil
Martha Stewart
Donald Trump

This is absolutely embarrassing

How about:

Harriet Beecher Stowe
Georgia O'Keefe
John Marshall
George Gershwin
Babe Didrickson
Robert Goddard
WEB DuBois
Noah Webster
Fiorello LaGuardia
Edwin Hubble
Irving Berlin
Leonard Bernstein

just for starters, and several hundreds more that should go on before any of those names.

I agree-that is pathetic.

Problem is that people tend to only think in the present. So when lists like this are made where people can pick/nominate who they please, the results are going to focus more on people who are living now. It's the same thing when you see things like top movie lists or top tv show lists....the vast majority will be things that have been done in the present. I always hate things like that because credit is never given to things of the past that were a big influence in our history in all kinds of venues. But because media just pounds our head by telling us that only those who live TODAY can somehow be the "greatest," the majority of people will follow suit...and hence we have a pathetic list as mentioned. Not to say EVERYONE thinks this way...because obviously there are some historical figures on there....but I think you get my point.

Oh Political people. Open a can of worms with that list.

I do think Aaarrrnold is what a great american can be. He IS the son of a Nazi officer. He came to the U.S. unable to speak English (some say he still can't :) ). and now he is the Govennator. A truely great American Story. Heck I even like the idea of H. Clinton on the list (I can't stand her - MY Opinion), but she has done a rags to Powerful Senator thingie.

The singers and movie people can be left off. I don't see how being able to sing or act like someone else makes you great. Now if you use your fame to do great things like what Jerry Lewis has done with MD, then you could be a Great American.

This ends My Opinion. Please post yours :)

I couldn't even BEGIN to take this in a serious fashion. The fact that some of these names were even nominated is an embarassment.
I won't even dignify this farce with a vote---.

What is wrong with these people, lets do a little commenting on it?
"Michael Jackson- He molested kids, what a great rolemodel, NOT
Hugh Heffner= Who si this
Rush Limbaugh- Who is this
Ellen DeGeneres- TOTALLY NUMBER ONE, i love her
Tom Cruise- He has helped us how?
John Edwards- ??
Arnold Schwarznegger- His muscles saved us
Laura Bush- She HAS DONE?
Hillary Clinton-Totally coolio
Mel Gibson- Who?
Madonna- Music saved us
Dr. Phil- I actually agree
Martha Stewart- No comment
Donald Trump-rich american"

My opinion to follow, again (I can't keep my mouth shut :earboy2: ) My opologies for the spellings.
M. Jackson - singer who supposedly touches little boys (innocent till proven guilty)
Hugh Hef. - porn guy, :sad2: not a great American.
Rush Limbaugh - created right-wing radio. Champion of free speach (yes for everyone even those he disagrees with). Makes you think about every topic in politics today. Great American.
Ellen D. - very good entertainer. That's it.
Tom Cruise - good actor. Raises money for Kids Miracle Network and other kids charites.
John Edwards - sued the pants off of some doctors. Tried to be a politition.
Arnold S. - a very inspiring rags to riches story.
Laura B. - Librarian. Wife. Mother. Using her position as First Lady to help people. We need more Librarians :cheer2:
Hillary C. - somewhat rags to riches. Appears to be a very good Politition, but on the wrong side of the fence from my veiws. She, like Arnold, shows what hard work can do.
Mel G. - Actor, that's it.
Madonna - Singer. Sexually promiscuis. :sad2: Not a Great American.
Dr. Phil - talk show host. Not Great but a good Guy.
Martha and Donald - rich. they do show what you can become with hard work.

Everyone will have different views about every famous person. I still don't see how singing and acting make you a great American.

(closing mouth ... for now) :wave2:

Put me down for WALT..wouldn't it be great if the 70-80 thousand people here at the DIS all voted for him? I know, not likely, but at least half might make him a shoe-in(is that right?)

I briefly saw this show last night and could not believe that Bill Clinton made the top 25. I don't mean to get political about this but a man how had sex with a 20 year old intern then proceeded to lie about it to the country and then said it mattered what the meaning of the word "is" is made the top 25. If I were Walt I would prefer not to be in the top 25 with him. Guess it shows how confused todays voting public is. Character means nothing anymore.

Well! That takes care of Marlon Brando, Katherine Hepburn, for starters. And the writers: Mark Twain, Henry James, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Gore Vidal. All much worthier of emulation than a self-aggrandizing politician.

Anyway, the whole notion of a list celebrating "Great Americans" is hogwash anyway. It's only done to sell magazines or boost ratings, like when Premiere magazine publishes its list of "100 Most Influential People in Movies" or Entertainment Weekly's "100 Most Glamorous Stars." Who the heck cares? How is this educational?
