Hi!! I always love to hear the ideas out there...

We are on budget this year and will be hosting a party at home. My son is into guitar hero...So the thought was to ask 6 to 8 boys to dress like a rock star and come over for a party...

1. We will play guitar hero
2. We will serve them a steak dinner (with chicken choices too)
3. I would like to play some "old fashion" party games...here comes your help!

In our area people do not normally host "at-home" parties, they are always at a "place". We have always done the same, but my husband was very sick over the summer and we just can't justify 500 for a few kids too play.

When I was kid we always went to "home" parties...the games are remember:
1. pin the tail on the donkey..of course will be modified..pin the pick on the guitar
2. musical chairs
3. hot potato
4. cotton balls...put a bowl on their lap and one on their head. With a blindfold the kid must spoon the cotton balls from the bowl in their lap to the one on their head.

Any other ideas...any help will always be appreciated~~~~

Straws!!! We took straws and made the kids suck on the end to pull up a cotton ball then they had to run it to the other side

fallow the clues to find the prize (goody bag) sort of game. I did this with 6 kids and it was a blast!! They loved trying to read the clue, figure out where it lead and then reading the next. All the clues had a letter on them and when put together spelled "Backyard" which is where the prizes were. the kids had a blast!

Yuck! I am so sorry for the spelling mistakes and type-o's! I have been running around taking care of sick kids!!

Love the ideas of the straws and the BACKYARD hunt...please pm me with the details of how you did it...I am under the gun and can't figure it out for myself!

Truly, I'd save the money on the steak. My 8 year old would be happier with hot dogs!

I've always done birthdays at home. The last few years, DS now 12, has a sleepover with about 6 boys. They played good old fashioned flashlight tag in the back yard. Ordered out pizza, rented a movie, made popcorn, and pancakes in the morning. They had a blast. Whole cost - under $50.

My kids love at home parties...they say they are way more fun. I like that they are way cheaper too!!

I think 10 year old boys would be happy to just run around.
Seriously. If it is at night time, they can play guitar hero and will probably want to go outside to play "manhunt" or something.

If it's still light out and warm enough, they may even want to just play a game of wiffle ball.

Not sure if they will want to do "organized" games at this age. Mine didn't, but yours might want to.

Hope you have a blast! They grow so fast!

I agree - at 10, they're really over little kid party games. I'd do burgers/dogs or pizza (at 10, ds didn't eat steak, and the only chicken he would touch would be in nugget form), and SODA! Manhunt, flashlight tag, scavenger hunt... My ds11 wouldn't want to dress up as anything, either. They did still like pinatas at this age.

my son is turning 8 in November and wants a sleepover.. Im not really into planning activities. I have had two sleepovers for dd and I found out that they do their own thing and have a blast so let them be:confused3

Im not going all out with food. Im going to buy a few pizzas and that is it besides some chips & cheetos.. Ice cream sundaes for dessert, along with some popcorn.

Mine is into army and Im going to have dh set up the backyard with tents, etc for them to play. we have a spotlight to come on at night so they can play as long as the want to. I will also have flashlights available for them. I dont see the Wii coming on at all personally since the boys will be running around playing. If it is Im sure the star wars republic game will be a hit he is getting for his bday. I found some great army plastic army helmets at the dollar store that I going to buy for them to use and buy each boy a dollar bag of army men for their goody bag gift along with the helmet.. Im sure a movie will be on at some point and thats about all the planning I will do. ;)

If you have access to a video camera and some outgoing kids, film them doing a "music video" of a favorite song, then play it later during the party. I agree that they've probably aged out of the classic party games -- they'll probably just want to play video games and eat most of the time. It might not be your idea of a great party, but they'll love it.

Kids in middle school still enjoy relay races. That might be fun. You could have a clothes race where they have to put on clothes to look like a rock star or something.
