I can vouch for using your cell phone vs standing in line to find another flight.
On a trip back from WDW, I had a layover in Chicago. When I got off of the plane at Midway and checked the board for my next gate, there it was -CANCELLED.
Along with all of the other stranded passengers, I headed to the desk and got in a huge line and listened, for just about 2 minutes to the arguing going on in front of me about no flight.
I grabbed my cell phone and called the airline. Got booked on the next flight out. Got out of line and noticed the people who were standing near me getting their cell phones out.
The next flight was overbooked by one. I would have loved to have taken that bump, but couldn't get in touch with my family to let them know not to pick me up at the airport--otherwise, I would have walked away with 800.00 in vouchers!
Nevertheless, I got home only a short time after my original ETA.
I bet there were still people standing in that line trying to get a flight by the time I got home!
