Does anyone own one? If yes, what made you buy it?

I bought an Asus netbook three weeks ago. I just wanted something small, and lightweight. I am going to upgrade the memory to 2 gb, to speed it up a bit. It came highly rated.

Bought it from amazon.com--best price I could find, no tax, and with my Amazon Prime, it was delivered the next day, for $4.00.

I like the fact that because it doesn't have all the bells, and whistles, my kids don't want to borrow it. Also took it on a long weekend. It was great having internet that fits in my handbag.

I also bought the Asus EEE, picking that particular one because of the 6 cell battery with 8-9 hours running time. Now, when I go away overnight I don't need to bring any additional hardware, etc., sometimes even for the weekend:) Unfortunately, I had only used it a few times when it got stolen off my sofa table at my Labor Day cookout:scared1: So, careful! These things are small and light and easily scoffed up.

I have the Lenovo netbook and I really like it. I got the 6 hour battery, too. I mostly got it because the laptop I have is bigger and heavier - and inconvenient for travel. I love having the netbook along at Disney, for example.

I don't keep anything important on the netbook - it's just for internet, etc. So if it were to get lost or stolen it wouldn't be as traumatic as my bigger and much more expensive laptop.

I love my blue Samsung NC10. One reason for choosing it (apart from the fact that it got excellent reviews) was that the screen is not shiny. I also bought a mini mouse and a 2gb card, which makes it a lot faster. At this moment I am using the desktop, which is upstairs, but most times I use my netbook in the living room. That way I can use the internet at the same time as watching TV. It will be going with me when we go on our cruise in 2 weeks time.

Do these PCs have a slot for a camera memory card so you can download pictures? Thanks.

I have a Vivienne Tam HP Mini which I bought at Sam's Club. I really had wanted a Macbook but the cost was way, way too prohibitive. I thought about it and came to the realization that all I would be doing is surfing the web, and checking email. What do I need a $2000 computer for? :confused3 I have been really pleased with it and the only downside is that there is no CD drive so I can't watch movies. But that would only happen once or twice a year so no big deal.

Also, on my netbook there is a slot for a SD card as well as a couple of USB ports.

HTH.

I bought a small HP 2133, and downgraded it to XP.

mostly for travel. we use it to check e-mail and download photos from outr cameras. (and to play movies!)

battery lasts up to about 3.5 hours without charging, VERY lightweight, all the features needed!
160G hdd, plenty of space for trips!

We got one for our DD7(turning 8) for her birthday which is next week. It's an MSI u100 series. Also picked up a samsung portable dvd drive for it. Should be great for our trip in, ohh 60 days! :)

Thinking about getting one for ds as a precursor to a full laptop when the budget allows. Would he be able to type papers on it??

Interesting. I was just Googling yesterday to find what is the largest screen laptop there is out. All I do is surf the web and check email, but my eyes are getting so bad, that I need the largest screen possible to look at images and text on web pages better. :magnify:

I'm thinking about biting the bullet and downloading Firefox as I know that browser has screen enlargement capabilites. Even this 15.4" screen has become too small. I just worry it wil slow down my computer too much. I didn't buy very much memory, RAM etc., thinking all I do is surf the web and check email. That has come back to bite me.

We have an HP running on XP. We have had it about 6 or 8 months. Absolutely love ours and found the keyboard the most user friendly compared to others. My advise to you is to go to a store and check out the keyboards if you are going to buy online. It will make a huge difference if you like yours or not. We had a grandson in the hospital when we were on a trip to Costa Rica. Being able to talk to him on Skype made the trip easier. I would NOT like a mini instead of a laptop. We have both. The mini is strictly used for travel.

I also have the HP. I love it. I bought it because it is so small and easy to take with me. I take it with me when I go to eat at places like Panara. I also take with me to Barnes & Noble while I do research. I'm working on a couple of books and it is great to have it available when my writing muse appears!

I have a Dell mini. I received it as a gift. It is nice to take when us when we travel, but I really prefer a regular sized laptop for everything else.

I would not purchase one myself.

do you think a netbook has enough hard drive to hold the program Word?

Netbooks are great as long as anyone getting them is aware of their limitations and is realistic about what they will be doing on them. Netbooks are designed to use applications that do all or most of their processing remotely (or in the cloud as some would say). This is web surfing, using web hosted applications like the new Live Office or Google Apps, reading web hosted email, blogging online, you get the picture.

They are not designed to run math logic intense applications like photoshop or any other photo or graphics rendering suite. They will run Microsoft Office but it is painfully slow and I wouldn't recommend it.

There are a lot of people who purchase a netbook to replace a laptop and are sadly disappointed with their performance. As long as you know the limitations and they fit your needs you will like it, if you want to do everything your CoreDuo with 4GB of RAM does now for $300 you will be sadly disappointed. It would be like trading the pickup in on a sub-compact and still trying to tow the boat.

One more thing to consider is the small keyboard. When you go try it in the store the 5 minutes you spend isn't enough time necessarily to know if you can handle the little chicklet keys. I have very small hands and the 10" is uncomfortable for me. If you are buying it to write a novel and don't want to attach a regular keyboard make sure to do a lot of hand stretches to keep from getting carpel tunnel in 3 weeks.

Glad someone started this kind of thread! I am thinking of buying a netbook for DD11. But I do have a question-so if anyone can answer tia-kind of wierd question but: would she be able to use the netbook to play on Club Penguin, etc. ?
Or should I get a new desktop, let her have that one and I could get a netbook for myself?

I was looking at the 10" netbooks, but realized the screen was too small for what I use laptops for and didn't have enough power or memory for anything more than email & surfing really. And it was hard to read due to size.

I use spreadsheets, websites, & photo software along with surfing & email.

I ended up getting a 13" HP laptop and am happy with the size. Still portable, but not too small that I have to keep scrolling left and right. I use the laptop for travel, in the car, out of the house or just around the house. Its light & has a very good battery. Also has DVD for movies. Netbooks didn't. My DVD drive is actually removeable if I wanted to make the laptop lighter & I was going to be needing it.

I use the desktop for home.

They do make 11" fully functional laptops...just 1" bigger than netbook & they actually work!

I have a HP 10" mini, 60 GB hard drive, that runs XP. I have all the components of Microsoft Works installed. This little computer is one of my all time favorite gifts. Love it!
