My local Costco was giving $10 flu shots today. That's the cheapest I have even seen them. I think Target and Walgreens charge at least $25.

I suppose you have to be a Costco member to get these $10 shots.

We have Blue Cross/Blue Shield--and our flu shots are free every year.
(and at Walgreens they give us 500 points for each one)

Check with your health insurance provider before paying for a flu shot. Many insurers provide these at no cost.

Costco will run it through your insurance … so definitely can be free for those with insurance that pays for the flu shot.

My insurance is odd and the medical group I was seeing charged a lovely $100 'facility fee' that was passed onto me if I went to the wrong location. My flu shot once cost me well over $100 a few years ago. The shot was free but I had to pay for the nurse's visit and the facility fee. I felt like a big sucker. It was cheaper to just get one at Target for $25 instead and pay for it myself. A $10 Costco shot is cheaper still and very convenient. My guess is that a number of people who get free shots will buy one at Costco for $10 just because it's easy and cheap. FWIW, my insurance changed and my flu shot is now completely fee.

We got ours at Costco on 10/1 and we paid $14.99 each.

Tom Thumb grocery stores (part of Safeway) charge for the shots, but then you get a 10% off coupon that is good for a week for one checkout. If I time my shopping right, I can just about get the entire flu shot expense back with the grocery discount!

That being said, my major insurance company has announced that they will cover the flu shot at most major pharmacies as long as you ask for the expense to be run as a medical expense rather than a pharmacy expense.

In many states, pharmacy services are required by state law to be accessible to all irrespective of membership and therefore you do not have to be a Costco member to use the pharmacy.

Call the pharmacy and ask if you need to be a member to use the pharmacy and/or to get flu shots from them.

One of the large hospital networks near me has a drive-through free flu shot clinic each year. Stay in the car, fill out paperwork for each person getting a shot, roll the windows down and your shirtsleeve up, done. They do take donations for the local food bank but it's not mandatory (I forgot to bring something one year). DS and I have been getting our free flu shots this way for the past 7 or 8 years.

From what my doctor says this is too early in the year to be getting a flu shot if you expect it to last till flu season ends. Beginning of November is when he suggests we get them.

The CDC recommends that you get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine is available, ideally October:

Flu season can start in October. Why would you wait? I would go with the CDC's advice. I already got mine.

I always go with the CDC's advice on this which has been echoed to me by multiple doctors. Including any oncologist my mom saw when she had cancer since I had to be sure I got the vaccine as I was her caregiver.

My insurance fully covers the flu shot. I got mine while visiting the doctor a week ago.

We get free flu shots at CVS through our insurance, but have to pay $35 at Walgreens. Weird. Made the mistake of going to Walgreens one year.... :( If we go to our doc, the shot is obviously free, but have to pay a co-pay of $25 to see doc. Easier just to visit CVS. We get them as soon as they are available in late Sept. It's a good thing since several children and teachers in our school district have already been diagnosed with the flu this year.

I explained why I wait because my doctor doesn't advise I get it till the beginning of November so it lasts till the end of flu season which he says can be as late as May. He said he feels it gets worse toward the spring and there is less chance of getting it in October. Thanks for the CDC advice. I am sure I could insist I get it early with my doctor but have not gotten the flu by waiting so it really doesn't concern me that I don't get it sooner. Just thought I would pass on my doctors advice. :thumbsup2

The general consensus is that the shot lasts AT LEAST "one flu season" (which is a very vague term), typically at least a year...possibly longer. It actually varies person to person.
