Guavaberry Emporium, Philipsburg
Located in a colorful Creole townhouse on Front Street in Philipsburg, the Sint Maarten Guavaberry Company sells its "island folk liqueur" made from the rare small berries that grow wild in the hills at the center of the island.
Guavaberries are a cousin to cloves and eucalyptus and bear no relation to the guava fruit. This unusual liqueur is a combination of guavaberries, rum that has been aged in oak barrels, and cane sugar.
This Guavaberry Liqueur is an island favorite with a long history. Throughout the island, this local elixir is the subject of stories and songs. The drink was originally served at Christmas time. Much like England's wassailers, island revelers would go from home to home on Christmas day singing "Good morning, Good morning, I've come for my guavaberry." The hosts would then offer the revelers some of this homemade liqueur.
Today the fruity, woody, bittersweet liqueur is the basis for a number of exotic cocktails. The Guavaberry Emporium, where the liqueur is made, offers its patrons samples of this unusual drink. Its guavaberry coladas (guavaberry liqueur mixed with coconut) are an island favorite. For a different type of cocktails, the proprietors also suggest adding a splash of guavaberry liqueur to very dry champagne.
Visitors looking for unusual souvenirs would do well to check out the Guavaberry Emporium's offerings. The emporium is housed in an historic 150-year-old cedar building on the site of what was a synagogue in the eighteenth century. The shop carries various versions of its guavaberry liqueur as well as all things guavaberry. The Emporium also sells a wonderful selection vintage rums, bottled hot sauces, honey, jams, jellies, and eclectic grilling sauces such as the papaya and guavaberry barbecue sauce.
