Does your school follow block scheduling? .

No, we have the four core classes taught by a "team" of teachers then related arts classes that alternate for the terms: P.E., art, and music. That is just at middle school. We used to have a computer skills class, but it was dropped to follow a state mandate that kids have at least a full semester of P.E. WV is one of the states with the highest level of obesity. We offer Spanish thru distance learning and that's about it.

We are spending part of our day next year teaching "walk to reading" and "walk to math" for kids who are lacking in basic skills. However, all the students are scheduled into these classes! We'll see how it works. I am hoping to do some creative grouping so that we can do some fun projects with the kids who don't need the extra remediation.

This year we had 80 minute classes and next year we are back to 60 minute classes.:confused3

Jen,
Although I have no doubt you are already doing these things or feel this way:

1) Realize Thomas, as cute as he is, may do things at school that is not allowed at home. Hence yes your baby can do wrong

2) Make sure he takes responsibility for his actions. A lot of parents don't seem to be doing this.

3) Stand up for him when you feel you need to, but have an open mind to what you are being told.

My son in the 8th grade was suspended for 3 days for poking a kid on accident with a pencil while goofing off with a friend. The friend did what most kids do and kidded dramatically about being poked and a yard duty brought my son up to the office. I fought the admin on it. She had written on his suspension that he stabbed the other student, I made her change it to poked. She wouldn't back down on the 3 days though, because it had left a mark that I am sure was gone by lunch time. I layed into Devin and his friend about goofing off like that, but I also told Devin the suspension was rediculous and enjoy his 5 day weekend.

Hi everyone...just hopping on quick to post pics of my little project. I can say I got one thing accomplished today (but that's about all...:rotfl: )

I found the Lilo and Stitch clipart online, and I designed the rest. Not too fancy, but I thought it was cute!

real cute shirt. nice job. Diane

:lmao: :lmao:
i'm sure you'll be fine.:thumbsup2
i think its probably just a few bad parents ruin the whole bunch of apples.
:rotfl2:

You got it! Most parents are willing to work with the teacher. A few think their child can do no wrong or their child should always have the A or the teacher isn't doing the job.

And, on the other hand, an experience with a "bad" teacher and parents are willing to jump to the wrong conclusion with other teachers.

that dog is drooling over that ice cream, but I"M drooling over that Rob.
:lovestruc :lovestruc

that reminds me of my grandkids dog. He is always starring at us while eating. My grandson has fed some tablefoods to him and every now and then he wants some. Diane

With our old principal, the "team" of teachers had to deal with a lot of the discipline. At the 7th and 8th grade level, sometimes I wondered how often we got to the truth enough the give an appropriate action when we investigated incidences: erring sometimes on lenient and sometimes on too tough. Kids that age are controlled by peer pressure so much that they would rather go thru whatever than tell the teacher. Saving face is a big deal to kids that age.

Our new principal takes care of most of the discipline. When we do have to punish, she frequently reminds us not to pick a battle we can't win. Parents often win when teachers are questioned.:confused3

Jen, I've always found that bribing the teacher with gift cards to her favorite store works.....:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Seriously, what has worked for me is when you first meet her and have a chance to sit down and chat, let her know that you are here to support her as well as your little guy, and that you are a team in the education of him. And don't sweat the small stuff. As he gets older, you'll see that picky little things that you may not like about his Kindergarten teacher didn't scar him. Most of all, enjoy those early years, they go by fast. High school is scarier than Kindergarten. (I'm sure Nancy-as well as the other BoBers with grown children- is thinking that I should enjoy Emily's high school years about now, since hers is getting married in a few short weeks.):goodvibes

Anyone have a ladder to help me get off my soapbox?:rotfl:

Rob feeds him scraps all the time. His favorite is chocolate chip cookies, just like Rob.

The picture is a little deceiving. He is a large dog, but not bull mastiff large, you know?

Hello Jarheard,
I spent 10 years in the Navy and never been on a ship. Vietnam was going at the time and could not get myself convinced the Marines, or Army, was the way to go. My son spent 4 years in the Marines and had more time on ship as soon as he stepped aboard the Kiersarge. He was Marine Expeditionary Force 26 if I remember correctly. He was happy to get over to Kosovo when we first went over. His knees soon did him in for any possibilty of re-enlisting. He loved the Marines since he was a kid and didn't want to do anything else. What's your rank and past assignments?

I'll pass along the message to the Marine......you Navy squid.:rotfl: Just kidding...

WOW!!! Only one post to catch up on this morning, that was easy............:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Good morning/afternoon all....

Thanks for the compliments on the t-shirt! I'm going to give it to Thomas later today. I have to pick him up early from daycare and go to his 5 year old well checkup. He has to get immunizations, which won't be fun. I did tell him about it, but also told him not to worry about it. I think he'll be ok.

Thanks for the advice about school - I get a little of that already at daycare, so I think I'll do ok. I know he's not perfect (amazing that a mom can admit that, right?:lmao: ) but I also know that sometimes additional questioning is needed to "get to the bottom of things" . I've found a couple of times that DS has gotten in trouble for teasing is when someone else was teasing him first, he was "fighting back" so to speak, and he's the one that gets caught...:confused3 Oh well.

Ok, gotta go get ready....I have to get to work early since I'm leaving early...

Well, looks like you and my husband will have something to talk about aboard ship! He has about 17 years in, retiring in 2011. He has not been to Iraq this time around, but was in the Persian Gulf War in 90-91. He is a Major and now works in Testing and Evaluation; in fact he's been in Yuma for the last couple of weeks analyzing data on a new vehicle the miitary is testing. We've been blessed to live in quite a few places, one of our favorites being Okinawa. Now we're in Quantico for the 4th time around, and are very happy, but ready for retirement-at least I am.:rotfl:

Now that I have bored everyone sufficiently, I will get myself a cuppa.........
