Fiona--- You are leaving as I am arriving. What a good price for Pop. I guess I have turned into a resort snob after our May trip and our one night at Pop, I don't think I'll get Norm back into a value. Even my kids and friends complained. It probably had nothing to do with the resort more that we were tired and cranky. You will love all the things that are going on for the Holidays. This will be our 4th Dec trip and still haven't had time to see everything. So many restaurants to chose from for a birthday dinner.

Wendy--- Congrats on the new laptop. DS#1 wants one for graduation so probably will be looking at them later this year. We have Dells now so will more than likely get one of theirs.

Eric--- You are right on top of things with planning for your vacations.

Everyone in Katrina path stay safe. I think eastern PA is to miss most of the rain from the storm, but the western part will get it.

Michele,
you fell for one of the most common misconceptions:All wheel drive has NO advantages when it comes to hydroplaning, it doesn't matter wether your car is rear, front or all wheel driven. It's just a matter of the amount of water on the road, your tyres' profile, and your speed.

I often drive at speeds in excess of 125mph on a dry road, but when it's raining I never exceed 80mph.

Eric, I know that no matter what car you drive, hydroplaning can happen. I was hoping that at least ONE tire would take hold! I was just surprised! I have never seen the interstate covered in water like that. Even the side roads to home were covered in places that water normally doesn't pool! The Weather Service has issued the flood warnings/watches. I am sure it will be extended since Katrina will be here tomorrow!

Shoot, I don't think there is even any place I can drive 80 legally! I was only going about 40mph when I hydroplaned. By the time I exited, I was shaking! I couldn't decide whether it was too much caffine or the drive home!

Michele,
I can feel with you as I once experienced hydroplaning on my motorcycle at about 70mph: Suddenly there was a jolt, the speedometer needle dropped considerably without the bike slowing down, then there was another jolt and a short squeak from the front wheel, and everything went back to normal. Needles to say that I slowed down for next miles to come. It was pure luck that kept me on the road. In three inches of water I wouldn't drive faster than 40mph either - or even approach the next parking place along the Autobahn. In Germany we have small rest areas every 15 to 20 miles which coem in quite handy in such a situation.

Wendy,
congrats on the new puter.

Talking about Katrina:
The flooding we had over here in the Alps -severe as it was- seems to be minor in relation to what we saw on TV last in the braodcasts from Lousiana.
When it comes to weather -and job security ;) - I always praise my luck for living in Europe, especially in the center of Germany where extreme weather is experienced on teh TV-screen only.

Rain rain go away, come again some other day! UGH. It is STILL raining and we are only going to get more! I have a river in my backyard that runs from one neighbors yard to the other neighbors yard. Then I have a pond to the side of the backyard. I have taken my winter boots out of storage just so I can take Daisy out to potty. :dog: The tennis shoes just weren't holding the water back anymore! We are going to be on the East side of this storm, so they are telling us that we will have severe storms, with tornados...which are VERY rare for this area, and high winds. Add to that the estimated 4-6 inches of rain...which will cause flooding and we are in trouble! I look for the kids to get out early today with a possible delay tomorrow. Well, time to don my boots and walk the dog....again. :umbrella:

Michele,
another heads-up:
In one of the bulletins issued by the National Weather Service preceding Katrina it said:

.. light cars will be flipped over or end up as flying debris. Fullsize SUVs or light trucks will only be moved.

Your kidding, right? I know we are supposed to get wind gusts...I've already took down flags and hanging baskets of flowers, but I didn't think it would be THAT bad...but if we are going to have tornados....then maybe!?

Katrina passed through and the worse that was in this area is some down trees and power lines. Michele I have the name of a good boat builder :rotfl: Thanks for calling Bette. Mike

Heading off early tomorrow morning for our trip to Alaska. There's still so much to do, but when I see all the terrible destruction in the Gulf, I realize I have no concept of the word "stress". Don't know what sort of an internet package we'll get but I will try to be in touch. If not, I'll catch up with everyone on the 12th of Sept. Please, no surprises (i.e., everyone switching to another cruise!) like I encountered the last time I went away! Hopefully, when I return we'll have some definite plans for our trip to NYC.

Jeanne - hope you John have a wonderful cruise - looking forward to hearing all about it. Relax and enjoy it!
Mike - glad you have come through Katrina ok.
Wendy

Ooops Michele,
didn't want to scare you: That was an excert from a warning issued when Katrina was still a Five and approaching the coast.

Jeanne & John,
enjoy Alaska. We would love to see pictures. It would be great if you could bring a CD to NYC. And Anja would like to have a Grizzly or a Kodiak cub :rotfl2:

Jeanne & John -- Have a great time on your Alaskan cruise! I'm anxious to hear your review when you get back.

Jeanne and John, Alaskan cruise is on our to do list too! Can't wait to see the photos!

Eric, seems Katrina went a bit further West, so we really didn't get a whole lot of rain today! They say it's not over yet though. The tornado watches are out until 9pm.

Mike, would his name be Noah? I may have to call on him before long! I am glad to hear you came through safe and sound!

Can we do that with a disposable camera? (Sorry, all our "toy" money is still going to tuition!)
Love the pirate night photo......I could swear that was my former head waiter actually sitting with the passengers!

It's actually been quite awhile since I've posted. My first excuse was tax season. (Those 80 hour weeks are killers). Then it was summer and now the kids are finally back in school. I'm very excited. There is a group of about 20 of us going (and yes, I have been telling them to check out these boards and sign up) and we are having our first "get together" planning party in a couple of weeks. I decided to theme it as a drive-in night without the cars. My only problem is I'm not sure what movie to show. I was planning on letting the cruise DVD run in the beginning, but I'm just not sure what movie to show later. It has to be kid friendly, but captivating enough for the adults. If anyone has any ideas, they would be appreciated. I'm really going to try and make it a priority to check in here more often. Only 13 1/2 months yet to go. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I think I recognize that head waiter also. Does he get more tips if he sits with the passengers?

I have a digital camera but have not developed or processed any pictures from it. You know that commerical where the kid is jumping in the pool and say I've been here for 6 months. How about 1 1/2 years.

Have a wonderful tip Jeanne and John.

Nice to see you posting again curlyq. I forgot you live right down the road from me.

It is unbelievable the devastation that Katrina has caused. It is like the tsumani last year. Why people chose to stay there when a cat 5 is heading your way I will never understand. My prayers go out to all those affected by the storm.

I guess I should shop for Pirate gear when the Halloween stuff comes out so I have something to wear for Pirate night. I know that I didn't dress for it last time.

Stay safe for anyone in Katrina's path.

Nancy

Sure, Jeanne:
When you bring picture to Eckerds, Walgreens, or similar places you just have to check the CD-box on the bag and they additionally burn a CD.

curlyq,
welcome back. Please tell your friends to submit their info, I would love to include them on The List - especially after all those deletions.

Talking about that headwaiter:
As far as I know he retired from the ship and opened a hotel catering especially to Europeans in New England :rotfl2:

The new concerning Katrina get worse from day to day. Although it's far from being as bad the tsunami which cost about 300,000 lives, it really looks horrible. But I guess in loss of property and value it's as bad as the tsunami. As soon as they start collecting for the victims over here, we'll donate - or we'll do it in four weeks in the States.
