My ds, 1 yr. can sit in these highchairs of course, but we usually put his food directly on the tray of his hc at home so he can feed himself. Any ideas how to do this with the wooden highchairs w/o to big of a mess?

When we took our DS at age 18 months we took disposible placemats. Incase you haven't seen them, they are plastic with adhesive strips on two ends to hold them to the table. This way his food was not on the table top itself. We only did this with not so messy foods like dry cereal, bread, sandwiches, dry pancakes, etc. Then when he was done we pulled it off the table and threw it away. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

We have a plastic tray that attaches right to the highchair. You can get it at One Step Ahead. We use it frequently on vacation and when we dine out at home.

MommyFlower, great suggestion. We always just slid the wooden high chair up to the table and then used a small plate from the restaurant or the table top after I cleansed it with an antibacterial wipe - but the plate thing only works with some kids and only with my DS when he was one (1 1/2 now) if he was being good and didn't feel like throwing the plate onto the floor.
Do you know where the best location is to get these disposable place mats?

I got them at Babies R Us in the section with cups and plates they had blues clues & sesame street on them. I would think Toys R Us might have them in their baby section. I know what you mean about the plates. My DS use to bang them on the table and most of time they were glass plates. So not only was it loud but dangerous too.:D

The disposable placemats are called table toppers. The one's we have purchased generally come with Elmo, Cookie monster, Zoey and Oscar on them. They are fantastic for going out to eat with a youngin. The adhesive on the back is generally strong enough that a child can't pull off the placemat, but easy enough for an adult to get off. We use them everywhere we go - from fast food restaurants to grand sit-down dinners.
